Shi Kaihuang

Shi Kaihuang is Su Chen's instructor and the scholar-soldier who makes bloodline-free human cultivation his life's work. His research establishes the foundations that he and Su Chen use to open the Blood Boiling and Yang Opening Realms to cultivators without bloodlines, while his mentorship gives that project its ethical purpose: the resulting knowledge should strengthen humanity rather than preserve a new monopoly.

Biography

From the frontier to an unfinished life’s work

Shi Kaihuang began as a soldier rather than a cloistered scholar. According to the history Su Chen recited to him, he entered the army at sixteen, guarded the frontier for thirty years, and reported General Lu Shaolan for corruption. After an ambush left him the sole survivor of 324 people, he killed Lu before the assembled army and was exiled to Stormwind Death Camp, where his survival through twelve years and six commanders earned him the name “Stormwind Scorpion.” Sir Yang eventually removed him from the camp, and Shi served him for twenty-four years before following him to the Hidden Dragon Institute. At the Institute, that formidable career gave way to fifty years of seclusion and research. Shi accepted no disciples and taught no ordinary classes because his attention was fixed on breaking humanity's dependence on inherited bloodlines. He lived alone in an untidy stone cottage, possessed little money, and treated conventional status as irrelevant; even a promising student's combat achievements meant nothing to him unless that student understood the purpose and cost of the work. His first exchanges with Su Chen therefore consisted of rejection, blunt criticism, and demonstrations meant to expose the younger man's shallow understanding of power. (Chapters 165–172)

Shi's standard for an inheritor was ultimately moral rather than technical. He warned Su Chen that a successful bloodline-free technique would have to be shared without commensurate reward, would threaten the Bloodline Nobility Clans, and might leave its creators hated and alone. Yet Su Chen's answer—that hope and allies could exist even amid those dangers—forced Shi to reconsider his own pessimism. Although Su Chen was more cunning and independent-minded than the resolute battlefield successor Shi had imagined, Shi accepted him precisely after seeing that difference clearly and registered him immediately as an inheritor disciple. Master, disciple, and Kaihuang’s Heaven

Shi taught Su Chen how to investigate principles instead of merely handing him finished techniques. He disclosed the Origin Talisman Energy Formation, a calculating framework for modeling how Origin Energy talismans conduct power through the body, and withheld none of its underlying knowledge. His immediate goal was Kaihuang's Heaven, a reliable route from Qi Drawing to Blood Boiling without a bloodline. Shi had already spent decades resolving most of the route's problems, but his insistence on contemporary human methods initially made him reject Su Chen's Brooke Formula and Ancient Arcana research as distractions. Their partnership changed both researchers. Su Chen secretly applied the Brooke Formula to Shi's stalled design, then used his unusual vision and experimental work to supply what Shi could not test on his own as a Light Shaking Realm cultivator. Shi objected when Su Chen's treatment of captive enemies threatened to become habitual, not out of sympathy for those enemies but because a bloodline-free path would be meaningless if its creator lost his humanity. When their work completed the Blood Boiling method, Shi later acknowledged that combining Ancient Arcana principles with his own framework had succeeded where his narrower approach had stalled. The publication of Kaihuang's Heaven also tested whether Shi would protect his ideals under pressure. He let Su Chen manage the confrontation over the technique so that his disciple could prove himself, but remained concealed nearby and intervened when Ma Renze became the last threat. Rather than claiming the proceeds from an invention built primarily on his work, Shi rejected Su Chen's offer of the money and credited his disciple's final contribution, political handling, and gift of the Brooke Formula. Clear River and the widening path

After Su Chen left the Institute, Shi remained both research partner and protective sponsor. He secured official placements for Su Chen and Cloud Leopard, warned Su Chen that something unnatural was occurring in Clear River, and promised to shield him from the political consequences of opposing the city's Bloodline Nobility Clans. Their Dreamrealm discussions continued the Yang Opening project: Shi explained the lethal instability at the Three Yangs Intersection, initially resisted reliance on medicine as merely another external restriction, and then accepted Su Chen's argument that a reproducible medicine was a practical step toward a universally accessible method. The completed Yang Opening method had only about a thirty-percent success rate per attempt and required Three Yangs Medicine, but failure did not bar another attempt. Shi treated that imperfect solution as a beginning rather than a reason to conceal it. He also urged Su Chen not to make the Primordial Blood Medicine compatible with inherited bloodlines: bloodline-free cultivators needed combat strength as well as access to higher realms if their social position was truly to change. The Heavenly Might Battalion’s long retreat

Military service restored the bearing of the veteran beneath the disheveled scholar. As one of the Heavenly Might Battalion's Seven Heroes, Shi helped carry responsibility for thousands of soldiers trapped deep in Ravager territory. By the time Su Chen found the battalion, Simotian's Nightmare Finger had cost Shi his left arm and one eye, wounds his Light Shaking regeneration could not simply undo. He nevertheless remained an active commander: he monitored the troops' exhaustion, challenged routes that gambled needlessly with their lives, and favored abandoning a compromised escape plan rather than staking the battalion on Danba's possible delay. Su Chen's arrival transformed a desperate withdrawal into a campaign with options. Shi's first reaction was not to question how his disciple had crossed hostile territory but to grasp his hand and rejoice that he was alive. He then worked with Li Chongshan, Chu Yingwan, and the other generals to evaluate Su Chen's supplies and military innovations. His accumulated consciousness training qualified him for Su Chen's soul-strengthening method, while his caution continued to check the younger man's dangerous plans, including the decision to give Danba a cultivation route capable of strengthening the Ravagers. The battalion survived, but political pressure followed it home. Shi was placed under house arrest beside the lake at Flowing Gold Fort, permitted to live freely except for the research that his confinement was designed to stop. Rather than treating Su Chen as a subordinate, he eagerly asked for the full account of his disciple's Ravager campaign and took pride in how far Su Chen's independent judgment had developed. The Boundless Sect and a chosen retreat

When the veterans formed the Boundless Sect, Shi accepted a role suited to his priorities rather than his former rank. He became Chu Yingwan's aide in the Constant Prosperity Division, willingly taking the nominal downgrade because she was the better administrator and it left him free to resume research. He helped the sect choose and train common disciples, contributed to the cultivation and combat framework used by its Sword Servants, and joined its strongest members in both building their mountain home and fighting major enemies. The path Shi began eventually exceeded the limit imposed by his own mixed bloodline. He had remained at Light Shaking for decades, and the lasting injuries from Ravager territory delayed him even after Su Chen's fifth-stage cultivation method made further advancement possible. With a solution derived from Pill Inscriptions and the Origin Bone Scepter, Shi finally reached the Spirit Burning Realm. The breakthrough moved him to tears: a goal he had once believed might end at Blood Boiling had not only transformed humanity's cultivation but returned to free him from his own ceiling. Shi continued to serve as a steady elder while the sect confronted larger powers. He argued for a deliberate campaign against the ancient Astrals rather than an unprepared assault, fought beside his former comrades, and helped force Gu Qingluo out of danger when she refused to abandon Su Chen during the sea campaign. These choices preserve the same temperament visible in his earliest mentorship: he accepts danger personally, but he resists gambling other people's lives for momentum or pride. By the last phase of the corpus, Shi had deliberately withdrawn from public responsibility. He and Chu Yingwan had married, and their son, Little Jianzhu, became the center of his daily life. This was affection as well as strategy: Su Chen had become the human race's foremost figure, and Shi refused to exploit his status as the great man's instructor or invite claims that he advanced by clinging to his disciple. Appearance and personality

Shi Kaihuang is introduced as a sloppy, solitary old man living beside a lake, with an untidy home and little concern for display. In military dress he instead carries the imposing air of a battle-tested soldier. His Ravager campaign leaves his left arm missing and one eye blind, injuries that remain visible afterward. (Chapters 165, 169, and 619–625)

He is blunt, austere, stubborn, and unusually indifferent to money. Those traits can narrow his judgment—he initially dismisses Ancient Arcana Techniques and medicine—yet he can admit when Su Chen's results prove him wrong and is willing to change his research accordingly. He teaches generously, values independent thought above rote techniques, and repeatedly favors caution when other people's lives are at stake. His severity coexists with deep pride in his disciple, emotional loyalty to his comrades, and an aversion to using either relationship for personal status. Abilities and cultivation

Shi is both a high-level Origin Qi Scholar and an originator of cultivation theory. His combat abilities emphasize control and overwhelming Origin Energy, while his greatest influence comes from research tools and breakthrough methods that other cultivators can reproduce.

Cultivation and physical power

Shi is already at the Light Shaking Realm when Su Chen meets him. He can subdue a Formation-Piercing Rhinoceros underfoot, dissect its defenses, and harden its flesh until the beast breaks apart; he also demonstrates to Su Chen that Light Shaking combat can devastate everything within a thousand-foot area. His mixed bloodline leaves that realm as his expected ceiling, and Simotian's Nightmare Finger inflicts an unhealed amputation and blindness despite the regenerative capacity associated with Light Shaking. Su Chen's fifth-stage bloodline-free cultivation method later opens a route beyond that ceiling, but Shi's old injuries prevent immediate advancement. Sumeru Void

Sumeru Void is Shi's signature control skill. He activates it through directed Origin Energy and a palm motion, causing the surrounding air and space to thicken until movement, wind, breathing, and even diffuse substances slow drastically. Shi uses it to halt Ma Renze's Concealing Smoke and expose a target who had dispersed his body. Later users—especially Su Chen—push it far enough to interrupt space, counter extreme speed, prevent teleportation, and damage targets, while Shi's own demonstrated version remains principally a supplementary restraint. The skill is not a bloodline gift unique to Shi. Later evidence identifies it as a Lin Clan technique that he appropriated for his own use, and Lin Mengze's version is explicitly stronger. Shi spends fifty years bringing the method close to completion; Su Chen's use of the Brooke Formula resolves the remaining stability problem.
