Consciousness Converter Instrument

The Consciousness Converter Instrument is Ignatius’s Arcana device for condensing a living Dark Astral’s consciousness into a persistent physicalized existence. Its conversions create the Astral race, while later experiments broaden its effects into consciousness enslavement and unexpectedly help Su Chen complete Deification.

History

Ignatius and the first conversions

Ignatius develops the instrument while seeking immortality. He concludes that a physical body inevitably decays and instead tries to preserve consciousness within Origin Energy. Dark Astrals, whose bodies had withered while their consciousnesses grew exceptionally strong, become his research subjects. The later revelation states that the Human Ancestor secretly encouraged this line of Arcana invention to draw power from the Astrals and increase his own opportunities to descend. (Chapters 424 and 1156)

The completed device condenses living Dark Astrals into specter-like beings. The procedure kills the original organism while creating a different persistent lifeform, so it is a conversion rather than literal immortality. Large-scale Arcana experimentation creates the Astral race. (Chapter 424)

Astral custody and the Radiation plan

After the Arcana Kingdom falls, the Astrals receive the instrument in the division of Arcana treasures. For a period they place it in Reaper’s Temple, where conversion and physical sacrifice occur together; this arrangement helps make the temple the capital of Gloom Kingdom during the Astrals’ height. (Chapters 781 and 1024)

Because Astrals cannot reproduce, Kapise later proposes the Radiation plan to expand the instrument beyond Dark Astrals. Full conversion of other races remains unsuccessful, but failed subjects prove susceptible to lasting consciousness suggestions. The project shifts toward manufacturing consciousness slaves and spreads the suffering once inflicted on the Dark Astrals to other peoples. (Chapter 505)

Research legacy and Su Chen’s Deification

Patelocke identifies the converter as one of the world-changing creations of Origin Blood Arcana Masters. Su Chen and Shi Kaihuang use its history as a conceptual model for turning something illusory into physical reality. (Chapters 354 and 547)

During the battle in Gloom City, Menelaus activates the instrument against Su Chen. Its consciousness-condensing function instead helps Su Chen separate and perfect his consciousness, completing Deification and his ascent to the Ultimate Emperor Realm. Su Chen prevents Menelaus from destroying the machine at that moment, but the corpus does not explicitly establish its final post-battle custodian. (Chapter 1042)

Abilities and properties

• Consciousness condensation: The instrument gives consciousness a persistent form in Origin Energy, converting an illusory mental existence into something physically effective. (Chapters 424, 547, and 1042)
• Living-subject requirement: Conversion must begin while the subject is alive; after death, consciousness disperses too quickly to process. The original organism dies as a new being is created. (Chapter 424)
• Original species restriction: Only Dark Astrals naturally possess consciousnesses strong enough to survive complete conversion. Early versions cannot fully convert other races. (Chapter 424)
• No reproduction: Converted Astrals do not reproduce, making continued access to subjects and the instrument strategically important to their population. (Chapters 424 and 505)
• Consciousness enslavement: Radiation-plan exposure can leave failed non-Astral subjects unusually receptive to permanent suggestions, enabling the creation of consciousness slaves without full conversion. (Chapter 505)
• Deification catalyst: By condensing Su Chen’s consciousness, the instrument inadvertently supplies the final condition he needs for consciousness-body separation and Ultimate Emperor ascension. This result depends on Su Chen’s existing cultivation and is not described as its normal output. (Chapter 1042)
