Sang Zhen

Sang Zhen is the Immortal Temple official responsible for its northern Three-Mountain Region operations and the opening of the Spirit Burying Terrace. His early attempt to use the Lin Clan draws Su Chen into the Temple’s orbit, after which he becomes the pragmatic negotiator who recognizes Su Chen as an ally rather than a subordinate. (Chapters 17, 68, and 111–114)

Biography

From compromised secret to negotiated alliance

Sang Zhen first appears speaking with Lin Xie about the Spirit Burying Terrace. When Su Chen overhears them, Sang Zhen leaves Lin Xie to silence the blind witness and later sends another assassin after Lin Xie fails. Su Chen survives, traces the operation back to Northface City, and turns the Temple’s need for secrecy into leverage. By their formal meeting, Sang Zhen acknowledges that the apparent disaster has become a valuable cooperation and introduces himself as the regional official responsible for the terrace. (Chapters 17, 31, 68, and 111)

Their negotiation establishes Sang Zhen’s defining role. He reveals the Immortal Temple’s base and the terrace’s tool-grade energy nuclei, challenges Su Chen to demonstrate equal value, and tries to secure the Corpse Spirit Flower without allowing their candidate to control the entire bargain. Su Chen instead proposes retaining the flower and refining medicine for the Temple. After Su Chen kills the Temple’s alchemist and demands training as compensation, Sang Zhen recognizes both the danger and usefulness of his adaptability, accepts him as an unusually low-realm ally, and abandons the Lin Clan when it becomes less valuable than the new arrangement. Sang Zhen’s moderate approach is later contrasted with Ma Renze’s coercion at the Hidden Dragon Institute. Su Chen specifically asks to deal with Sang Zhen and accuses Ma Renze of mistaking restraint for weakness. Much later, testimony about one of Sang Zhen’s former subordinates shows that he once controlled a broad Northface network but did not tightly police it; the latest references do not establish Sang Zhen’s location, rank, or activities after the Immortal Temple’s relationship with Su Chen deteriorates. Appearance and personality

Sang Zhen is described simply as an old man. No distinctive clothing, build, or facial features are supplied. (Chapter 111)

He is pragmatic, courteous, and more honest about his organization’s limits than many of his colleagues. He probes for advantage and authorizes lethal cleanup, but he can compromise when Su Chen exposes weaknesses in the Temple’s position. His willingness to acknowledge Su Chen’s intelligence creates a durable working relationship; his loose supervision of subordinates later becomes a liability. (Chapters 17, 111–114, 236, and 728–743)

Abilities and cultivation

The corpus does not state Sang Zhen’s cultivation realm, bloodline, combat techniques, or personal research specialty. He is confident enough to operate near major Northface clans and commands assassins and regional agents, but those facts establish organizational authority rather than a measurable personal power. His demonstrated expertise is operational and historical. Sang Zhen understands the Immortal Temple’s goals, the Spirit Burying Terrace’s contents, the three grades of Sark’s Energy Nucleus, and the uses and dangers of the Corpse Spirit Flower. He also negotiates quickly under pressure, revising the Temple’s agreement when Su Chen makes the original plan untenable.
