Biography

A damaged ruler and a divided existence

Pei'er is established as one of the Borderland's three preeminent Third Rank rulers, alongside Clark and the Lord of Fireflies. Her influence rests on a compact faction of personally loyal wizards and on her formidable wind magic, but her first direct audience also exposes an alarming defect: she repeatedly freezes in place, loses continuity, and resumes speaking as though no time has passed. Those lapses make her politically dangerous and personally vulnerable, prompting her to test the newly arrived Saul through subordinates before deciding whether his Purity Wizard Tower is a threat or an asset. The cause lies in an earlier failed attempt to reach Fourth Rank. Pollution forced Pei'er to halt the ascent, left her original Wind Sprite body cracked and weakened, and exposed her to Clark's attempt to devour her through dreams. To preserve herself, she separated most of her damaged body and a deliberately restricted portion of cognition into the being treated independently as the Old Witch, withholding the memories that could trigger Clark's pursuit. That split aspect sought a Perfect Body, while Pei'er's public identity was temporarily maintained by Nerela; the plan divided one origin into distinct operating identities rather than making the Old Witch merely a disguise. Restoration and the struggle against Clark

When Saul's tower conflict brings the divided selves together, Kismet repairs Pei'er's blocked cognition and makes recognition possible. Pei'er then absorbs the Perfect Body cultivated by the Old Witch into her surviving original body, reclaiming her memories, authority, and coherent identity. The restoration does not instantly erase her damage, so Saul safeguards a reserve of her principal consciousness in the Baisec Magic Mirror. Their bargain is practical on both sides: Pei'er will protect the Purity Wizard Tower and support Saul's advancement, while he gives her a defensible refuge and a route toward recovery. Clark remains the immediate danger because his dream pressure can still reach the weakened Pei'er. She nevertheless comes personally when his influence threatens Saul, accepting the risk of being drawn into his dream rather than abandoning her new partner. Saul's group destroys Clark's surviving consciousness and breaks the threat that had constrained Pei'er's plan, while the failure of Ophelia to provide the hoped-for solution further consolidates Pei'er's dependence on Saul's alliance. The episode changes their relationship from mutual leverage into tested cooperation, with protection running in both directions. (Chapters 625, 628–631)

Political partnership and Saul's candidacy

Once her identity is secure enough to act publicly, Pei'er uses the vacancy among the Borderland's rulers to elevate Saul rather than treat him as a subordinate. She negotiates with Herbert and the Stargate Council, invokes Gorsa's standing when useful, and helps place Saul among the candidates for the next Third Rank position. Her choice serves factional survival—Saul's tower, healing knowledge, and combat record can stabilize territory that has lost Clark—but it also honors their agreement and gives her a powerful ally who owes neither rival ruler his rise. Their political partnership acquires genuine intimacy. Pei'er openly flirts, kisses Saul, and stays with him while still balancing restoration of her own strength against the work of reorganizing her faction. Yet she does not let affection replace caution: when she senses danger, she leaves the mirror containing her protected consciousness with Saul. The gesture shows how far her trust has moved from the initial series of hostile tests. Saul becomes both the person she promotes in Borderland politics and the custodian she trusts with the part of herself most vulnerable to renewed corruption or dream attack. (Chapters 646–647)

Storm Eyes and Prismatic displacement

During the campaign to seal the Storm Eyes, Pei'er repeatedly uses air walls and wind control to protect Saul and the allied wizards. The alliance fractures when Herbert proposes sacrificing human lives and conceals his own agenda. Pei'er blocks his flames, credits Saul's warning over Herbert's authority, and joins the battle that ends Herbert's betrayal. Her decision is politically costly because Herbert had helped sponsor Saul's candidacy, but it confirms that her alliance is no longer opportunistic: she chooses Saul's judgment and the survival of those under their protection over expedient obedience to the Stargate Council. The victory activates a trap embedded in Pei'er's role. Her exceptional sensitivity to spatial changes has made her a living signal conductor for a Prismatic coordinate planted by the Stargate Council. Stellar influence overrides her will, softens her body into an unstable state, and pulls her out of the wizard world. Saul catches the fate connection and follows, learning that Pei'er has been scattered rather than simply killed. Because returning such an unstable essence would make her truly dissipate, he leaves her in the Prismatic World, where the connection between them gives her a chance to reconvene and adapt. Separate remnants and the Death Demon return

The soul fragment Pei'er left in the mirror develops its own malicious consciousness after the original has been displaced. It refuses contact with the Prismatic Pei'er and is later joined shallowly to Nerela within the Dead Wizard's Diary, producing a dual consciousness that eventually presents itself as another Wind Sprite. That being inherits Pei'er-derived memories and appearance but is not the restored original; its independent choices and later Diary-bound existence belong to Nerela's continuity. Meanwhile, the original Pei'er gradually becomes harder to distinguish from the fate-line beings that shelter her in the Prismatic World. (Chapters 702–703, 747–758, 850–852)

At the final crisis, Gorsa and Floco call through the fate lines for a Death Demon capable of retrieving Saul. An aurora condenses into Pei'er's exact form, encloses Saul and the Diary in a cocoon, pulls his connection out of the abyss, severs him from the Symphony of Fate, and sends him across many worlds so he can digest knowledge beyond his current rank. She then observes Douglas's endpoint, causing his life, soul, and consciousness to reach it at once. Her statement that she is Pei'er but not entirely Pei'er confirms the latest state: Pei'er's identity persists within a collective Death Demon existence, not as an independently restored Wind Sprite. Appearance and personality

Pei'er's original Wind Sprite form is a petite, strikingly beautiful woman with long hair and a sculpted, almost nonhuman delicacy. Before the Perfect Body is integrated, damage from her failed advancement leaves her body fragile and cracked. The Old Witch's enlarged eyes and ears, wrinkles, and grotesque proportions belong to the separated aspect rather than Pei'er's customary appearance. In the finale, the collective being takes Pei'er's recognizable shape but is formed from aurora-like color and allows waves or matter to pass through it.

Proud, sensual, and politically calculating, Pei'er is accustomed to ruling through tests, agents, and negotiated advantage. Her suspicion of Saul gives way to respect, desire, and unusually deep trust because he repeatedly protects her identity without trying to subordinate her. She can be ruthless toward liabilities, but she also rejects Herbert's sacrifice and consistently shields allies in battle. Her split-off evil thoughts should not be treated as a complete statement of her personality: they are an intentionally separated remnant that develops apart from the original.

Abilities

• Wind magic: Pei'er creates hurricanes, cutting currents, flight, wind barriers, and precisely controlled air walls capable of protecting allies or stopping large fire attacks.
• Spatial sensitivity: Her Wind Sprite nature detects Storm Eyes, spatial distortions, and remote coordinate changes with exceptional accuracy. The same sensitivity allows the Stargate Council to exploit her as a Prismatic signal conductor.
• Split-self survival: She can partition body, consciousness, and memories to preserve a core identity under pollution. Reintegration with the Perfect Body restores coherence, although it does not immediately restore all lost strength.
• Soul preservation: A protected consciousness reserve can reside in the Baisec Magic Mirror, while detached fragments can continue developing independently under suitable conditions.
• Death Demon manifestation: After assimilation, the Pei'er-form collective manipulates tangible fate lines, crosses world boundaries, severs Symphony connections, transports Saul through the starry sky, and makes an observed target arrive immediately at its endpoint.

• Saul: Pei'er moves from testing him as a potential rival to sponsoring, protecting, and loving him. He preserves her consciousness, follows her into the Prismatic World, and later becomes the individual whom her collective form rescues from the abyss.
• Old Witch: The Old Witch originates as Pei'er's deliberately restricted split aspect and carries out the Perfect Body plan. Their shared origin is crucial, but their separately developing cognition and actions remain distinct until the body is reintegrated.
• Nerela: Nerela impersonates Pei'er's public identity during the divided period and later shares a Diary-bound existence with Pei'er's autonomous evil-thought fragment. The resulting Wind Sprite is not the original Pei'er who entered the Prismatic World.
• Clark: Clark's attempt to devour Pei'er during her failed ascent drives the split-self strategy and keeps her under dream pressure until Saul's alliance helps eliminate him.
• Herbert: Pei'er initially works with Herbert to advance Saul politically, then turns against him when his Storm Eye plan demands sacrifice and threatens her allies.
• Gorsa and Floco: Their final fate-line call reaches the collective containing Pei'er, enabling it to retrieve Saul and end Douglas's threat.
