Kruta
Kruta is an orcish faith cultivator whose path channels the spirits of his tribe's ancestors. He befriends Zac Atwood in the Perennial Vastness, awakens an Indomitable Court seal during their expedition into the Stand of Saeward, and later joins Zac's cycle in the Left Imperial Expanse after brutal training under the Tayn family.
Biography
The Stand of Saeward
Kruta meets Zac through duels and Orange Zone expeditions, where his communion with lingering battlefield wills reveals opportunities ordinary explorers cannot perceive. When the Hero Souls in the Stand of Saeward grow agitated, he contacts Zac instead of gambling alone. Kruta has studied the Stand for years, mapped the echoes of its ancient armies, and identified an opening toward Saeward's command center. He negotiates a larger share for supplying that expertise but plainly states that treasure is not worth dying for when his tribe's survival is not at stake. (Chapters 1020 and 1024–1025)
The expedition escalates into an imperial conspiracy and awakens Kruta's connection to the Indomitable Court. He helps Zac navigate the Hero Souls and puts his fate on the line against Valsa, gaining far more than the rewards he expected. Kruta then leaves the Perennial Vastness because his E-grade potential is exhausted and time outside will better prepare him for the coming trial. Returning home, he reports both the imperial death and the Left Imperial Palace to his grandmother, only for a Tayn disciple to descend and take him away, converting his secret fortune into an obligation to train. (Chapters 1042–1045)
Tayn training and the Left Imperial Expanse
Years of Tayn instruction transform Kruta's ancestral spirit into a corporeal figure made from fierce flame and wrap his own body in a semi-opaque armor of conflict. He resents Zac for leaving him behind, attacks on arrival to demand satisfaction, and then admits that accepting the seal was his own greedy choice. The ordeal nevertheless expands his ambitions beyond a comfortable place on the tribal council. Kruta joins Zac's cycle because Iz Tayn judges their fates compatible and enters the Imperial Graveyard as both ally and claimant. (Chapters 1206–1211)
Inside the expedition, Kruta protects the crew, leads a separate search team, and fights beside Catheya when the base scatters the group. He challenges her attempt to conceal the true risk of restoring the Stellar Extractor, insisting that partnership requires disclosure rather than being used as expendable help. Later, in a memory domain with Joanna, he deciphers political relationships, reconstructs burned clues through their fiery echoes, and lends his flames of war to her public judgment. These experiences develop his ancestral path from personal glory into a means of guiding allies through conflict and institutional corruption. (Chapters 1221–1252 and 1334)
Appearance and personality
Kruta is a burly orc associated with the open steppes and the physical presence of a tribal warrior. After his later training, his skin carries a slight red tint and a flame burns above his head. The same fire spreads into translucent armor, while a much larger ancestral warrior stands behind him. He can also disguise himself by inscribing the essence of a slain beast onto bone and injecting the temporary array, taking on features such as green scales and a lizardman's shape. (Chapters 1024 and 1210)
He is boastful, sociable, acquisitive, and more cautious than his aggressive presentation suggests. Kruta bargains hard over loot, imagines future wives and tribal honors, and complains extravagantly about every disaster Zac brings near him. He also knows when to retreat, keeps dangerous secrets to protect his tribe, and demands honesty from companions before accepting shared risk. His humor does not erase loyalty: he warns Zac against going down with Zecia, arrives when called, and moves to defend him the instant Kator appears threatening. (Chapters 1024–1025, 1043–1045, 1211, 1225, and 1252)
Abilities and cultivation
Kruta is a faith cultivator who communes with ancestral spirits and the lingering wills of ancient battlefields. A soul wisp of an old warlord resides within him, and the bond leads a main-tribe warchief to adopt him. In places saturated with conflict, he can sense the moods and fragmentary memories of Hero Souls, distinguish changes in their patrols, and sometimes receive clues or rewards from the fallen. The contact is imperfect: most Hero Souls cannot communicate, resentment can distort them, and Kruta warns that even he cannot safely talk down the hosts after their madness intensifies. (Chapters 1020 and 1024–1025)
His later cultivation expresses faith as flames of war. The ancestral spirit becomes a burning combat avatar, while fire around Kruta forms armor and empowers punches, blades, and his voice. He fights with brutal short swords and can flood an area with Conflict-attuned flame, making him effective against groups and hardened plants. The flames also interact poorly with opposing domains—his outbursts disrupt Catheya's Black Ice Cosmos—and strong mental or Dharmic forces can still knock him unconscious or leave him badly wounded. His improved Hegemon body does not put him near Autarch or peak-imperial power. (Chapters 1045, 1210–1211, 1221, 1240, and 1252)
Kruta's expertise includes battlefield interpretation rather than formal scholarship. He creates a painted tactical map that replays the Stand's ancient troop movements, reconstructs numbers from the echoes of a burned note, and uses local identities to enter a memory-domain investigation. These applications depend on environments imprinted by conflict or fire; they do not establish universal clairvoyance. At his latest state, the flames of war are newly incorporated and still developing, explicitly comparable to but distinct from Xiphos's conviction-based fire. (Chapters 1024, 1334, and 1346)
Items
Kruta carries bone-based tribal tools for disguise, mapping, and ancestral rites, but no named personal artifact is established as an enduring signature possession.
Relationships
- Zac Atwood: Kruta and Zac become friends through duels and dangerous expeditions. Kruta supplies local knowledge and ancestral perception, while Zac's fate repeatedly brings opportunities and trouble that transform Kruta's future. (Chapters 1020–1045 and 1206–1211)
- Iz Tayn: Iz's family extracts Kruta from his tribe, tests his fate, and reforges his flames. She calls him Little Candle and leaves him in Zac's cycle, treating his independent path as less useful to her than Zac's future assistance. (Chapters 1045 and 1206–1207)
- Catheya: Kruta and Catheya spar on Earth and later become isolated partners inside the Imperial Graveyard. He objects when she hides her real objective, but joins her dangerous plan once she treats him as an equal participant. (Chapters 1208–1211 and 1252)
- Joanna: Kruta helps Joanna navigate the Intrepid Battalion's politics and uses his flames to amplify her judgment. Her direct moral action gives purpose to intelligence he cannot turn into proof by himself. (Chapter 1334)
- Ogras Azh'Rezak: Ogras distrusts how much Kruta knows about Ultom, while Kruta mocks his caution. Both nevertheless fight within Zac's expedition and share a practical understanding that conflict creates opportunity. (Chapters 1042–1043 and 1211)
