Joanna

Joanna is a founding commander of the Atwood Valkyries and one of the Atwood Empire's most durable military leaders. Her early demand for power develops into a spear path built on discipline, faith, killing intent, and refusal to yield. She is a committed follower of Zac Atwood, but her later decision to enter the Indomitable Court turns that loyalty into the foundation for an independent cultivation journey.

Biography

Entry and defining relationships

Joanna is freed from Greenworth with other survivors, but safety is not enough for her. She asks Zac for an indefinite Contract of Binding because she believes power is the only reliable answer to what happened, accepting his warning that service will mean repeated bloody battles. After receiving a spear and armor, she brings roughly one hundred women forward; eighty accept the same commitment and become the first Atwood Valkyries. Her steely determination therefore becomes collective responsibility almost immediately, with Joanna standing beside recruits whose lives will depend on her command. (Chapters 118–120)

She establishes that command through protection, accountability, and method rather than ceremony. Joanna organizes guards while Zac meditates, claims responsibility for killing Monk when the act could destabilize the settlement, and develops the Valkyries into a disciplined spear-and-shield unit. As her level rises, she credits access to resources and dangerous hunting grounds rather than presenting her strength as personal entitlement. Escalation, choices, and consequences

Joanna's role expands from unit captain to public general. She confronts slavers with uncompromising violence, uses the name “Atwood Valkyrie Joanna” to build Port Atwood's reputation, and creates a banner that gives scattered defenders a visible symbol of organized resistance. These choices make her useful in diplomacy as well as combat, but they also bind her identity to an institution that frequently loses soldiers in wars Zac cannot fight alone. Rather than retreat from that cost, she helps turn the Valkyries into an army capable of operating through shields, coordinated energy formations, and methodical advance. Years of command do not make Joanna passive when Zac returns or when the empire changes scale. She remains a trusted attendant and source of operational intelligence, leads incursions, and joins him eagerly for special operations against the Kan'Tanu. Her all-Valkyrie unit moves faster than the main army and searches for high-value targets; Joanna personally bursts through enemy defenses with a direct spear assault before others can react. The campaign shows her development from a follower who requested equipment into a commander whose scouting, judgment, and elite formation let Zac act on a wider battlefield. Later role and current direction

At Peak E-grade, Joanna deliberately refuses an ordinary Hegemony breakthrough and pushes the Indomitable Court's spear trials to their deadliest conclusion. She chooses the path where death is possible over one she equates with defeat, survives a final opponent through Armament Zone, and earns the attention of Indra Eyler, the Emperor's Spear. The inheritance gives her a martial framework larger than Port Atwood, but she does not transfer her allegiance to the vanished Limitless Empire. Her devotion remains a chosen source of power rather than a reason to abandon judgment. Joanna breaks through a faith barrier to protect Zac, later investigates corruption among imperial officers, and executes those who have betrayed the soldiers they command. She ultimately leaves routine duty to pursue the Indomitable Court's deeper trial, accepting Zac's order to survive as a personal anchor. Even after losing an arm and an eye in a battlefield stripped of friendly energy, she keeps fighting. Appearance and personality

Joanna's presentation is defined by military function: armor, spear, a steady formation, and eyes repeatedly described through determination rather than ornament. Later battles leave her bloodied and scarred, and the Indomitable trial reduces her armor while costing an arm and an eye. The vision in Chapter 1425 occurs within the Court's ordeal, so those wounds describe her condition there rather than establishing a permanent appearance after the trial. Joanna is blunt, disciplined, and willing to use lethal force against slavers, corrupt officers, or threats to her people. Her loyalty to Zac can become self-sacrificial, yet it is paired with administrative competence and the confidence to lead without his presence. She grows from seeking power through binding herself to another person into choosing a personal inheritance path whose demands she accepts knowingly. Ruthlessness and care are not opposites for her: the same conviction that drives executions also makes her protect wounded allies and value ordinary soldiers over the status of their commanders. Joanna advances through the System's level structure as a spear specialist, but her late path combines conventional cultivation with a growing body of faith and killing intent. Her latest confirmed formal stage is Peak E-grade, with Hegemony deliberately suppressed so she can temper herself at the boundary of life and death. She has formed a first Dao Branch and carries Indra Eyler's inheritance, but the later Eight Hells method relies on accumulated battle, conviction, and faith rather than requiring her to reproduce Zac's or Indra's exact Dao. Spear fundamentals and Valkyrie warfare

Joanna's foundational style strips spear combat to direct lines, lethal targeting, and minimal unnecessary motion. She applies the same principles to the Valkyries: overlapping shields and linked energy streams create a durable wall, while coordinated thrusts and steady advance deny enemies easy openings. Victorious Spear and Armament Zone

The Indomitable Court's escalating trials force Joanna to express her spear path without relying only on skills or Cosmic Energy. Facing a golden-robed spearman while mortally wounded, she refuses retreat, catches the enemy weapon after being impaled, and lets conviction drive an attack beyond what her Dao alone should sustain. Armament Zone turns one spear into a field of a hundred weapons, an expression summarized by the idea that steel gives birth to war. It expresses the Branch of the Victorious Spear she had already formed before entering the trial, while her refusal to surrender earns Indra Eyler's recognition. (Chapters 931 and 1121)

The same trial demonstrates the path's limits. Steelspirit Cascade can restore her through severe physical damage, but she enters its final battle already depleted, and hostile intent can produce injuries that simple endurance cannot dismiss. Armament Zone is a peak expression reached under existential pressure, not evidence that every later exchange begins with the full field deployed. Indra's impartation expands Joanna's possible road, while her latest ordeal shows she still has further inner gates and a True Extremity to excavate. (Chapters 1121 and 1425)

Faith, killing intent, and Eight Hells Suppression

Joanna's baleful battlefield aura develops into Faith Energy centered on Zac and spreads among the Valkyries who share her conviction. It can reinforce survival, manifest an illusory spear-bearing presence, and carry pressure that clashes with hostile powers. The path makes her extraordinarily difficult to kill for a Peak E-grade despite lower Endurance than Zac, and it lets her force passage through a faith barrier when protecting him. Its power is relational and ideological: it depends on conviction and accumulated belief, while Joanna's readiness to sacrifice herself can turn that strength into a serious personal risk. Eight Hells Suppression is the combat system Indra imparts through the Indomitable Court. Joanna opens the first gate through battlefield slaughter and reaches insight into the second alongside Rava. Rather than integrate Dao into a refined personal technique, she drives the method with killing intent, faith, and the accumulated weight of violence. With two gates she can contest an average Integration-stage close-range fighter, and the inheritance theoretically points toward suppressing Dao and piercing Terminus, but those higher possibilities are not demonstrated mastery. Indomitable Court trial

Joanna chooses the Court's prolonged ordeal to transform inherited instruction into her own path. The trial removes access to cooperative conditions and eventually turns ambient energy hostile, leaving her to rely on what she already holds, physical improvisation, and the command to survive. She fights after losing her spear, substitutes a captured sword, and keeps moving after catastrophic wounds. The test's purpose is not simple durability; the repeated pressure draws her toward an answer about why she fights when victory, support, and escape have disappeared. (Chapters 1285 and 1425)

Indra concludes the ordeal by condensing the resentment of fallen enemies and the Limitless Empire's aspirations into a spear called the Extremity of Man. She tells Joanna to suppress the Eight Directions, open her inner gates, and then excavate her True Extremity. This is instruction and foreshadowed potential, not an acquired named attack. By Chapter 1433, Joanna has seen the destination after Indra cuts the trial short, but no completed Hegemony breakthrough, full Eight Hells progression, or personal Extremity is confirmed.
