Zon

Zon Grain is the captain of the Red Fortis Army and an engineered soldier from Trozen. He first approaches Raze Cromwell as an overwhelming outsider searching for a mage, then repeatedly crosses Pagna through a signal he secretly leaves on Liam. His technological body, analytical system, powered suit, and energy weapons make him one of the setting's most formidable combatants, but his story is shaped as much by responsibility for his soldiers—especially Anna and Red—as by raw power.

Biography

The mage in the ice dimension

Zon first appears in a frozen dimension where Raze, Liam, and the Dark Faction students are fighting Gunther. He introduces himself as Zon Grain and says he has been seeking a talented mage for an unspecified problem. Gunther's stage-six strength does not trouble him: Zon forms an energy blade, overwhelms the warrior at close range, and demonstrates a level of force that makes Raze doubt even his imagined nine-star self could win. Yet Zon refuses to recruit Raze immediately, judging that the mage is not ready and leaving without fully explaining either Trozen or the Alterian danger behind his search. (Chapters 174–175)

His departure is less final than it appears. As he passes Liam, Zon secretly places a technological marker near the student's neck, creating a route back to the group centered on Raze. When Royo later dismembers Liam and leaves him dying in another dimension, the marker's distress signal opens a portal for Zon. He kills Royo immediately, but his decision to save Liam is initially pragmatic: Liam is the living link through which he may find the mage he needs. (Chapters 174 and 398–399)

Zon nevertheless goes far beyond preserving a tracker. His nanomachines reconstruct Liam's severed arms and failing organs and install the Vyka system throughout his body. He warns Liam to retain the eyepatch if he wants the change hidden, then watches the students long enough to confirm that they can survive without further intervention. The rescue creates a consequential bond: Zon has turned a dying academy swordsman into a system user, while Liam's continued survival gives Zon both a connection to Raze and a person for whom he gradually assumes responsibility. Reunion at the faction tournament

Liam's distress signal summons Zon again during the faction tournament, after the Tulip sisters overpower Liam and Anna. Zon kills the sisters before their enhanced bodies can continue the attack and places himself between the wounded pair and anyone seeking revenge. Anna identifies him as the leader of the Red Fortis Army, confirming that her own suit and system originate in the same force. Zon does not simply join one faction's side; he says that both sides have used one another and chooses to protect the people in front of him while ending the immediate cycle of retaliation. Around Raze's later tournament fights, Zon acts as an analyst and a restraint on allies who would otherwise intervene. His system calculates Rayna's rapidly falling survival odds and Raze's low chance of victory, but Zon also reads Raze's expression and recognizes that the mage believes he has a hidden, roughly even chance. He prevents Rayna from interrupting and correctly treats Raze's concealed artifact as the missing variable. Zon then submits to Olag's demand for a test without turning it into an execution. He moves too quickly for most witnesses to follow, severs both of Olag's arms, and blasts him while accounting for the White Hybrid's regeneration. He explains that a complete test of his power would require the gathered warriors or an awakened Raze, but his calibrated attack already proves the point. The encounter shows the discipline behind his lethality: his system helps him measure what an opponent can survive, while his authority lets him stop a conflict once its purpose is satisfied. Head chef and emergency defender

After the tournament crisis, Zon briefly attempts a life unconnected to war. His system's exact measurements let him diagnose faults in a forge and, later, criticize a bowl of noodles down to its uneven cuts. When he demonstrates perfectly uniform preparation, the ordinary owner of the Perfect Noodle shop hires him as head chef. Zon keeps his black suit on under Pagna clothing and applies a soldier's discipline to cooking, even training the talented Skyler through repeated knife work and Qi control. (Chapters 817–821)

The shop also exposes the moral fatigue beneath his controlled manner. Zon enforces an absolute rule against harming customers or damaging the restaurant, defeats attackers without needing Pagna Qi, and recognizes Alterian communications equipment among their possessions. During the resulting interrogation, he admits that he once believed he was helping his country, only for killing to become a count rather than a human consequence. He still wants to consider himself good, but no longer hides from the scars left by what he did in war. (Chapters 825–830)

Peace remains temporary. When a Scar Deleter threatens the academy region, Zon becomes an emergency defender rather than abandoning the people around him. He uses disguise, speed, and technological firepower to intervene while concealing his role from most witnesses, then takes possession of the Deleter's portal device. Red and the Golden Globe island

Zon joins Lince in the expedition surrounding the Golden Globe, where an island-wide formation suppresses magic, artifacts, and parts of his own equipment. The restriction forces him to conserve what remains and fight beasts without assuming his complete system-and-suit advantage. His usual calculations still guide the group, but the island demonstrates a practical limit: technological power sourced through crystals and artifacts can be reduced when a larger formation interferes with their operation. Seeing Red behind the island's barrier breaks Zon's usual control. He identifies Red as the former subordinate who killed the All Knowing and nearly damages the barrier in anger until Raze stops him. Zon then tells the history he has carried from Trozen: children were amputated, experimented on, and trained until survivors became the black-suited Red Fortis soldiers; as captain, Zon later gave merciless wartime orders, while Red carried out the ugliest parts. Zon also admits that the All Knowing ordered him to kill Red and that he refused, leaving him to interpret the later murder and chaos as his own failure of command. (Chapters 1017–1022)

To break the island's suppression, Zon and Lince gamble that the power-stone crystals beneath it sustain the spell. Zon destroys the crystal network despite having only a calculated chance of success, restoring Raze's magic and his own fuller output. He then uses the Scar Deleter's short-range portal device to vanish and reappear around Mosak, combines yellow beams with energy blades, and cuts the Light warrior apart. The victory does not secure the Globe. Zon's system detects a discrepancy in elapsed time, but Heino has already exploited time reversal to take the object. That failure keeps Zon tied to Pagna's broader war and to Raze's coalition, while the encounter with Red turns his unresolved past from background motivation into a direct responsibility he can no longer postpone. The final war with Red

When Red appears during the war against Alter, Zon insists that their confrontation is his responsibility. He orders Anna to observe, describing Red's path and the Red Fortis collapse as failures that began under his captaincy. Zon's upgraded power stone gives his yellow output greater force, faster movement, and stronger repair than before; his suit shifts its emitters into rear thrusters, and he forms double-bladed energy axes. Red's superior system, however, predicts Zon's close-range patterns and repeatedly turns the captain's anger against him. (Chapters 1204–1225)

Anna refuses to let responsibility become isolation. She enters with the Bracer of the Unshackled Echo, whose vibrations disrupt Red's energy constructs, and asks Zon to link their systems. The link shares position, intention, and combat data without spoken commands, letting Zon exploit openings that neither soldier could create alone. After they incapacitate Red, he offers the only proof he believes Zon will accept—his system and the memories stored in it. Zon responds without defending his old assumptions. He says he was wrong, accepts Anna's comfort, and agrees that Trozen's surviving soldiers must learn the truth rather than remember Red only as a murderer. The revelation changes his idea of command: responsibility is no longer the solitary punishment of an errant subordinate, but the duty to understand what his people carried in silence and to correct the story he helped impose on them. Passing on the system and returning home

Before leaving Pagna, Zon installs Red's one-of-a-kind system in Liam. Its nanobots will replace Vyka's network over time, and Zon describes it as more powerful than either his or Anna's system. He does not keep the upgrade for another war; after resolving Red's history, he says that he no longer wishes to return to combat even if Trozen needs fighters. Instead, he asks Liam to use the system to help Raze in Alterian, extending his support for the mage through the person he first saved as a mere link. (Chapters 1266–1272)

Zon and Anna finally use the Golden Globe to return to Trozen. Liam thanks him for both the reconstruction and the quieter good he did at the noodle shop. Zon answers with characteristic bluntness that the new system was given because he does not want Liam to die, then smiles at Liam and Raze before crossing the portal with Anna. This is Zon's latest direct appearance: alive, homeward bound, reconciled to the truth about Red, and seeking a life beyond the wars that defined him. (Chapter 1276)

Appearance and personality

Zon is first described as a stern-looking man close to thirty, with short, spiked black hair swept back, glowing red eyes, and a black, skin-tight metallic suit traced by red-lit lines and circles. His head and neck remain exposed, while the armor covers the rest of him so completely that later observers wonder whether it is effectively part of his body; he never removes it at the noodle shop, instead hiding it beneath Pagna clothing. A later disguise reveals long, flowing black hair, but the corpus does not clarify whether that look is permanent or part of the disguise. (Chapters 174, 819, and 903)

His manner is controlled, blunt, and intensely analytical. Zon states unpleasant conclusions directly, uses probabilities rather than reassurance, and can kill without hesitation when he believes doing so will prevent further revenge. That severity is tempered by restraint: he calibrates his attack on Olag, protects ordinary customers, teaches a young cook, and repeatedly stops allies from making desperate choices that his system judges fatal. Zon's strongest development is moral rather than technological. He carries guilt for commands that turned people into numbers, assumes Red's crimes prove his own failure, and initially tries to bear the correction alone. His final smile and decision to leave combat do not erase his past, but they show that he no longer treats endless fighting as the only honest response to it. Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Engineered Fortis body and suit

Zon's strength originates in Trozen's Red Fortis program rather than Pagna cultivation or an Alterian magic core. His childhood memories show forced amputation, experimentation, and lethal training before the survivors received their black suits and systems. The resulting body can move faster than high-stage Pagna warriors can track, withstand enormous impacts, overpower enhanced enemies, and repair damage through nanomachines. He does not use Qi, and the exact biological boundary between his body and suit is never defined. (Chapters 174–175, 699–702, 819, and 1022)

The suit channels energy from an internal power stone, reinforces healing, and can alter its configuration during battle. Emitters on his back operate as short-burst thrusters for aerial movement and direct acceleration, while the armor closes lesser damage over time. Zon's system overlays technological sensing, calculation, and communication on his own judgment. It measures materials and motion with extreme precision, reads physical signals and expressions, calculates survival or victory probabilities, detects residual portal substances, and models how much force a regenerating opponent can survive. Its conclusions are probabilities rather than prophecy: hidden artifacts, incomplete observations, emotional decisions, and systems with better data can overturn an initial result. Compatible Fortis systems can link directly, exchanging location, intent, records, and even memory-associated feeling. • Liam: Liam begins as Zon's covert link to Raze. Zon twice answers his distress, reconstructs him with Vyka, and later entrusts him with Red's unique system. By their farewell, the practical connection has become open concern, expressed in Zon's blunt order that Liam not die.
