Red

Red is a former Red Fortis soldier who becomes one of Alter's Deleters in Pagna. Remembered by Zon and Anna as a murderer and traitor, he is ultimately revealed to have accepted the most dangerous system and the army's dirtiest work to protect his team. His final battle ends with his death and the recovery of the unique system later given to Liam.

Biography

A Deleter in Pagna

Red emerges as part of the Deleter force operating under Alter, working with Heino after the Red Fortis Army has been scattered. His history makes him a uniquely personal threat to Zon and Anna, while his advanced system makes him dangerous even among the technologically enhanced soldiers. In Pagna he accepts missions that put him against Raze's coalition and treats violence with provocative humor, reinforcing his former comrades' belief that his wartime brutality reflects his true nature. Alter's last war

When Alter and the Light Faction prepare to meet the united Pagna army, Red remains on their side and assesses the battlefield through his system. He recognizes the coalition's strength but does not abandon Heino or the position he has taken. Zon, by contrast, treats the war as the overdue opportunity to punish the subordinate he believes murdered the All Knowing and betrayed the Red Fortis group; Anna insists on joining because she knows Red's system makes a solitary confrontation unsafe. Red meets Zon as a former teammate rather than an anonymous enemy, joking about their reunion before turning it into a contest between two generations of Red Fortis technology. His red beams, shields, thrusters, and projected weapons pressure Zon despite Zon's stronger power source, because Red's newer system predicts and exploits the older system's preferred answers. Anna eventually disobeys Zon's order to stay out, using her disruptive bracer to break Red's suit and nanomachines so the pair can overcome a combat architecture designed to defeat their own. The truth carried in his system

With his body disabled, Red asks Zon to remove and read his system even though both understand that extraction will stop the nanobots keeping him alive. He refuses a verbal defense because their lie-detection systems and years of distrust would make his explanation suspect. His last statement—that he is glad Zon is the one doing it—turns the system into both evidence and bequest; removal kills him after a final breath. (Chapter 1229)

The recovered memories reverse Zon's understanding of Red's betrayal. Red had volunteered for the experimental system and accepted the army's cruel assignments so other team members would not bear them. When the All Knowing ordered him to eliminate the Red Fortis group, Red killed the commander and destroyed the predictive machine instead, then allowed himself to become the enemy rather than risk his comrades obeying the same order. Zon and Anna learn too late that his isolation and service under Heino followed a concealed act of loyalty, not a desire to destroy them. (Chapters 1229–1230)

Appearance and personality

Red is identified by his red hair and the fitted black Red Fortis suit integrated with his system. In combat the suit repairs damage, produces thruster-like bursts, and becomes surrounded by red energy weapons. The corpus does not establish a surname or a civilian identity beyond the name Red. (Chapters 1217 and 1223–1228)

He presents himself as confrontational, mocking, and excited by a difficult fight. That demeanor supports the reputation Zon and Anna formed during the war, but his stored memories reveal a more guarded motive: he deliberately carried lethal tasks, public hatred, and suspicion to spare the team he valued. He does not seek forgiveness at the end; he chooses a form of proof that costs his life and leaves his former comrades to interpret it. (Chapters 1217–1230)

Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Advanced Red Fortis system

Red volunteered to receive the Red Fortis Army's latest experimental system. Nanomachines operate through his body and suit, healing injury, maintaining physical function, generating an interface, and modeling combat choices. Its predictive architecture is more advanced than Zon's, allowing Red to anticipate the older system's answers and exploit its dependence on optimized recommendations. The system is still probabilistic rather than omniscient: obscured sight, unfamiliar cooperation, and actions outside its expected model create openings. (Chapters 1223–1230)

The same network converts stored energy into red beams, shields, blades, axes, needles, afterimages, and fields of suspended swords. Red can fire from his palms, propel himself through the air, reinforce close combat, attack from many directions, and use energy more efficiently than opponents with stronger sources. His signature full-output state overwhelms Zon's system calculations, but energy remains finite and his suit can be damaged. Anna's vibration-based disruption breaks the armor and nanomachines, leaving his body unable to respond. Removing the central system stops the remaining support entirely and kills him. Soldiering and tactical judgment

Red's effectiveness is not solely automated. He is an experienced Red Fortis operative trained for assassination, war, and covert violence, and he understands how system users become dependent on recommendations. He combines provocation, timing, feints, disposable weapons, and rapid changes of angle to push Zon into predictable responses. His final choice also demonstrates deliberate control over the technology's evidentiary function: he uses the system's stored memories to communicate a truth he believes speech cannot establish. Relationships

• Zon: Zon was Red's captain and pursues him as the presumed murderer of the All Knowing. Red's final surrender of his system lets Zon discover that Red killed to save the team, leaving their conflict resolved only after Red's death.
• Anna: Anna remembers Red as an untrustworthy and exceptionally dangerous teammate. Her intervention disables his system, but she subsequently reads his memories and shares Zon's recognition that they misunderstood his loyalty.
• Heino: Heino finds Red after the latter is isolated in Pagna and gives him a place where his power can again be useful. Red consequently remains with Alter's side through the final Pagna war.
• Liam: They do not establish a direct relationship. After Red's death, Zon preserves the unique system and later installs it in Liam, allowing Red's combat functions to survive in another user.
