Gavin

Gavin Rocksbored is the head of the Moon Shield Clan, one of the Dark Faction's five leading clans. He embodies its shield tradition as both a border defender and combat specialist, but his dependence on the clan-head shield and his submission to Murkel culminate in a defeat he considers incompatible with continued leadership.

Biography

Clan head and Dark Faction leader

Gavin first attends the Dark Faction academy assessment as an older clan head whose Moon Shield Clan has never failed to defend its border with the Light Faction. He reacts openly to the students' unexpected strength and later participates in the senior councils around Principal Murkel. When Moon Shield student Ossep dies underground, Gavin mourns without retaliating against the survivors and pledges to train the clan's next generation better, presenting loss as a leadership failure to correct rather than an excuse for revenge. (Chapters 134–149, 249, and 368)

His public authority conceals an older submission. Murkel had challenged the major Dark clan heads, defeated Gavin and the others individually, then defeated them together when they tried to resist his claim. Gavin bowed from fear for his life and continued under Murkel's leadership, even as later disputes over the Lethal Bite Clan and the tournament exposed fractures within the faction. The recollection explains why Gavin's final warning treats Murkel as a monster the remaining warriors must stop. (Chapters 480–532 and 723–724)

Duel with Tilon and chosen death

At the faction tournament, Gavin seeks out Tilon to prove the superiority of Moon Shield technique over the bearer of Raze's Legendary shield. He fights aggressively with a round clan-head shield, while Bargo betrays him to repay a debt to Raze and aids Tilon. Gavin adapts by avoiding direct impacts that would charge Tilon's shield and uses his own artifact's ringing effect to freeze opponents for fractions of a second, nearly turning technical knowledge into victory despite fighting two enemies. (Chapters 682 and 703–717)

Tilon ultimately sharpens the edge of the Legendary Cursed Shield and severs Gavin's shield arm. Gavin surrenders, transfers the Moon Shield head's round shield to Bargo, and declares that his age and stalled progression leave no acceptable future after such a loss. He asks the new head to execute him, wishes that the survivors succeed where the four clan heads failed against Murkel, and moves his own throat onto Bargo's sword. His death is voluntary execution after defeat, not an effect of Tilon's shield curse. (Chapters 717–718)

Appearance and personality

Gavin is an older man with a scruffy beard and large belly, an appearance that understates the speed, resilience, and Qi control expected of a major clan head. He carries the Moon Shield Clan's round shield over one arm and can use it like an extension of his fist rather than remaining behind it as a passive wall. (Chapters 134 and 682–718)

He is outspoken, proud of the Moon Shield tradition, and capable of accepting losses according to a severe warrior code. That code produces both constructive restraint—he does not blame others for Ossep's death—and fatal inflexibility. Once disarmed and unable to imagine leading or progressing, Gavin chooses death and succession rather than living with diminished status, even though neither Tilon nor Bargo initially demands it. (Chapters 368 and 718)

Magic, cultivation, and abilities

Gavin is a high-ranking Pagna warrior whose clan claims the Dark Faction's strongest defensive techniques across multiple weapons. His personal specialty is the shield: he reinforces his body and arm with Qi, blocks or redirects weapon strikes, bashes with the shield's edge, and combines defense with punches, kicks, and aerial movement. His experience lets him stop short of Tilon's absorbing surface and attack exposed angles rather than feeding the cursed shield power. (Chapters 682 and 715–717)

The clan-head round shield further hardens Gavin's body and emits a ringing resonance when struck. That resonance briefly freezes or slows an opponent, creating the fraction of a second Gavin needs to bypass a guard. It is powerful but not absolute: Bargo reveals the mechanism, Tilon continues accumulating energy through forced contacts, and the Legendary shield's sharpened edge cuts through Gavin's reinforced arm. Once the arm and artifact are lost, Gavin does not demonstrate an alternative ultimate technique. (Chapters 716–718)

Relationships

  • Tilon: Gavin selects Tilon as the test of Moon Shield supremacy. Their duel ends with Tilon severing his arm, but Gavin acknowledges Tilon's victory and entrusts him with a warning about Murkel.
  • Bargo: Bargo is Gavin's vice head and long-time clan associate. His betrayal helps defeat Gavin, yet Gavin accepts him as successor, gives him the clan shield, and requests the killing blow.
  • Murkel: Gavin submits after Murkel defeats the major clan heads together. Fear keeps him under Murkel's rule, while his final wish is that others finally stop that “monster.”
  • Ossep: The death of this Moon Shield student prompts Gavin to accept grief without retaliation and promise better training for the next generation.

Items

  • Moon Shield clan-head shield: A round shield passed to the clan head. It reinforces Gavin and emits a resonance that briefly impedes opponents when struck. After Tilon severs Gavin's arm, Tilon gives the artifact to Bargo as the new head; it is distinct from Tilon's cursed shield and has no approved item page. (Chapters 682 and 716–718)
  • Legendary Cursed Shield: This belongs to Tilon, not Gavin. Its sharpened edge removes Gavin's arm, but its fatal curse applies to Tilon and does not cause Gavin's death. (Chapters 717–718)
