Tilon
Tilon is the principal shield-bearer of the Crimson Crane and one of Alba's longest-serving fighters. His identity is built around protecting the clan's other members, first through trained defensive Qi and later through a shield created by Raze Cromwell. That item makes him an exceptionally powerful frontline defender while binding his life to two fatal conditions.
Biography
Shield of the Crimson Crane
Tilon first appears in Repton as a large, masked Crimson Crane warrior traveling with Alba and Cronker. He joins the clan's search for the Dark Magus, protects its members during the academy conflict, and repeatedly places his shield between attackers and companions. The resulting injuries are treated as an expected consequence of his role: after the Light Faction elder's attack, he is the Crane member most badly hurt because he has deliberately absorbed the pressure meant for the group. (Chapters 194–295 and 407–444)
A shield worth a life
During the Behemoth Clan's assault, Tilon longs for a Dark Magus weapon like those already carried by his comrades. Rayna delivers Raze's Legendary shield when Alba is exhausted and Polter is about to kill her. Tilon accepts it immediately, blocks Polter's attacks, converts the force into restored Qi, healing, and stored energy, then releases that power strongly enough to defeat an opponent he never expected to overcome alone. His stated motive remains unchanged: as the Crimson Crane's shield, he must protect Alba at any cost. (Chapters 589 and 599–600)
Only after Polter falls does Rayna disclose the complete curse. If the shield is destroyed in battle, Tilon dies; if it goes unused in combat for twenty-four hours, it destroys itself, which also kills him. Tilon initially despairs because refusing to defend himself is now as fatal as risking the shield, but Alba asks whether he would truly have rejected the power that saved them. He accepts that the two are connected and immediately resumes blocking attacks while carrying the injured Alba to safety. (Chapter 601)
Frontline of successive wars
The curse forces Tilon to keep fighting, but the corpus does not present every later battle as reluctant compliance. At Flendon he remains the Crane's durable center, drawing energy from the Behemoth attackers and sustaining the formation after others are exhausted. In the funeral ambush, Alba avoids letting a defense-breaking Void Pulse strike his shield, while Tilon continues clearing golems and protecting the group's advance. His danger becomes part of the clan's tactical planning rather than separating him from it. (Chapters 875–880 and 1136–1159)
In the final war on Alterian, Tilon leads a defensive unit against spell fire and expands the shield's protection over nearby allies. When Idore fires an attack powerful enough to shatter it, Kizer warns him not to block. Tilon moves the shield aside and takes the blast through his own torso, preserving the item—and therefore avoiding the curse's immediate death—but suffering a catastrophic wound that removes him from the battle. The narration explicitly leaves him possibly dead or barely alive, and the supplied corpus never resolves which. (Chapters 1722, 1735, 1739, and 1753–1754)
Appearance and personality
Tilon is introduced as a large warrior dressed entirely in black, with a hooded mask that reveals only his eyes. His size and heavy shield make his defensive role visually obvious, though the later weightless Legendary shield lets him move faster than opponents expect. He is outspoken in defense of Alba, easily worried by unfamiliar magic, and capable of comic despair when the shield's curse is explained. None of that fear prevents him from returning to the frontline. (Chapters 194, 425, and 599–601)
His clearest personal principle is that he is “the shield” of the Crimson Crane. It is more than a fighting specialization: he accepts repeated injury, carries Alba out of danger, and ultimately exposes his own body rather than risk breaking the object tied to his life. The final choice is not safe—the direct spell may have killed him—but it preserves the defense on which his remaining allies still depend. (Chapters 444, 599–601, and 1753)
Magic, cultivation, and abilities
Defensive Qi and shield technique
Tilon is a trained Pagna warrior specializing in defense. He reinforces his body and shield with Qi, braces through heavy impacts, performs charging shield techniques, and uses the shield itself as a blunt weapon. His expertise includes the speed to place a shield in an attack's path despite its apparent bulk. Before receiving Raze's item, stronger opponents and prolonged battles can wear him down, and attacks he fails to intercept can still reach him or his allies. (Chapters 200–210, 295, 547, and 599)
Legendary Cursed Shield
The Legendary Cursed Shield is created by Raze and delivered through Rayna. While held, it feels weightless and prevents an impact's force from transferring normally to Tilon, though its defense still depends on his reactions and positioning. Blocked attacks restore his Qi, heal him, increase his physical power, and then accumulate further energy inside the shield. He can discharge that reserve offensively or slam the shield down to form an enormous protective barrier around others. (Chapters 599–600, 1136, and 1722)
Its strength is balanced by two absolute fatal conditions. Destruction in battle kills Tilon, while twenty-four hours without using it in combat causes the shield to self-destruct and likewise kill him. The item is difficult to break, not indestructible; Alba avoids testing it against Void Pulse, and Tilon takes Idore's spell with his body when the alternative is certain destruction of the shield. His latest custody remains apparent, but his survival after that bodily wound is unknown. (Chapters 601, 1136, 1153, and 1753–1754)
Relationships
- Alba: Tilon treats protecting Alba as a defining duty. She trusts him as the clan's frontline, helps him accept the shield's curse, and builds later plans around keeping both him and the shield intact.
- Raze Cromwell: Raze creates the shield that saves Tilon and Alba from Polter but permanently binds Tilon to continued combat. Tilon nevertheless keeps using it in support of Raze's coalition.
- Rayna: Rayna delivers the shield's operating instructions and reluctantly reveals its fatal curse after Tilon has already used it. Her reassurance that the shield is exceptionally strong does not conceal the risk.
- Cronker: Cronker is a fellow early Crimson Crane member and recurring battlefield partner. Their different specialties give the clan a defensive anchor and a covert striking arm.
Items
- Legendary Cursed Shield: Tilon's defining weapon and defensive tool. It absorbs force, restores and stores power, heals its bearer, and produces a wide barrier, but its destruction—or its self-destruction after twenty-four hours without combat use—kills him. (Chapters 599–601, 1136, and 1722–1753)
