Ortus Hyman

Ortus Hyman is a Grand Duke of Shimuin, commander of the Violent Tide Knights, and the country's top-ranked knight. He leads the expedition against Iris and changes from a cautious opportunist into a committed follower of Eugene's campaigns against the Demon Kings. (Chapters 225, 342, 354–391, 473, 509–510, 575, and 599)

Biography

Shimuin and the Demon King of Fury

Ortus enters the Pirate Empress subjugation as commander-in-chief and initially reacts to Eugene, Sienna, and Carmen's secret arrival as a potential attack. Once their suspicions are resolved, he accepts an oath spell, lends Exid's Dragonheart power to the fleet plan, and continues the mission after Iris becomes the Demon King of Fury. Although he privately considers himself ordinary, self-protective, and willing to profit from minor corruption, the battle draws him forward when he could safely withdraw: he blocks Iris's attack on supporting priests and keeps fighting beside the Hero. After victory he yields public credit to Eugene, then joins the Hauria and final campaigns because witnessing Eugene has changed what he wants his own life to serve. (Chapters 354–359, 364–375, 381–391, 473, 509–510, 575, and 599)

Appearance and personality

Ortus has trained for more than fifty years and is old enough to have a twenty-three-year-old son, but the corpus gives no stable hair color, eye color, height, or facial description. His battlefield presentation is distinguished by knightly equipment and Exid rather than by a detailed physical portrait. (Chapters 342, 357–359)

He begins proud, practical, politically cautious, and reluctant to accept avoidable responsibility. Ortus readily admits that he is not naturally heroic and prefers to keep his head down, yet he dislikes solitary cowardice and discovers that he will step forward when others need him. His later devotion to Eugene can become comically excessive, but it rests on the genuine transformation he experiences fighting the Demon King of Fury. (Chapters 358–359, 375, 381, 389, 473, 509–510, and 599)

Abilities and powers

Ortus ranks among the continent's strongest knights and is called Shimuin's First. He can sheath his hands and body in dense mana, form an Aurashield, wield a sword against Demon King-level attacks, and react fast enough to intercept Iris's Demoneye strike on nearby priests. Exid materially strengthens him, but it is not an absolute defense: Eugene and Carmen subdue him while he is unarmored, and their superior mana breaks through his attempts to resist. (Chapters 342, 357–359, 373–375, and 473)

Relationships

  • Dior Hyman: Dior is Ortus's son. Ortus promotes opportunities for him but does not consider him ready to inherit every Hyman responsibility merely through family privilege. (Chapters 342, 356, and 359)
  • Eugene Lionheart: Ortus initially doubts and resents Eugene, then sees him defeat the Demon King and becomes an ardent supporter who joins later wars and defers the victory's credit to him. (Chapters 336–359, 375, 381, 389–391, 473, 509–510, and 599)
  • Ivic Slad: Ortus and Ivic are rivals who distrust and insult each other, but they cover one another in battle and become comrades without becoming friends. (Chapters 342, 356, 375, and 509)
  • Oseris Animus: Ortus serves King Oseris as Shimuin's senior knight and expedition commander, representing the kingdom in campaigns against Iris and later continental threats. (Chapters 354, 387–391, and 473)
  • Carmen Lionheart: Carmen helps subdue Ortus during the secret boarding, later fights beside him against Iris, and trains with him as part of the final war's general staff. (Chapters 357–358, 375, 575)

Items

  • Exid: Ortus uses one of Shimuin's Dragonheart-powered national treasures as his principal armor. It improves his combat capability and can supply mana to large-scale magic, though Ortus temporarily lends it to Carmen during the Iris expedition. (Chapters 357–359 and 391)
