Carmen Lionheart

Carmen Lionheart, the Silver Lion, is the strongest Lionheart of her generation apart from Eugene and the long-serving captain of the Third Division of the Knights of the Black Lion. A dedicated fist-fighter, mentor, and clan elder, she carries her theatrical self-presentation into genuine leadership: she trains the clan after Eward's rebellion, develops Ciel as her disciple, fights in the campaigns against Iris and the specter, and commands Lionheart forces in the last war. Her evolving White Flame Formula ultimately moves beyond its inherited Star system and helps the family overcome limits built into Vermouth's original version. Biography

Black Lion Mentor

Carmen enters the story in Aroth as a senior Lionheart representative investigating Eward and negotiating the loan of Wynnyd. Although she is Gilead's aunt and the captain of the Black Lions' Third Division, she rejects being called Eugene's great-aunt and cultivates the image of a younger, rakish warrior. Her authority is real beneath the performance: she insists that Lionheart treasures carry consequences, identifies Eugene as a fellow fist-fighter by his habits, and quickly takes an interest in his talent and taste for dramatic technique names. (Chapters 49–50, 76–79, and 156–165)

After Eward's rebellion damages trust inside the main estate, Carmen accepts Gilead and Klein's request to keep the Third Division there and retrain the White Lion Knights. She also becomes Ciel's master, teaching her to turn fists and legs into weapons and responding to misbehavior with direct, exhausting instruction. Her mentorship is demanding without being careless: she gives Ciel real combat experience, adjusts a training regimen when even Dezra cannot endure it, and understands that a teacher must sometimes support from a distance rather than intervene in a disciple's private grief. Carmen treats Eugene's growth as both a source of family pride and a challenge to improve herself. She helps restrain his Dark Room phantom, recognizes the altered nature of his flame, and refuses to be reduced to a passive elder while the next generation advances. She later leaves the estate with Ciel and Dezra for extended training and travel, maintaining contact through monthly letters. By the time they settle temporarily in Shimuin, Carmen has developed a disciple strong enough to become the youngest Black Lion while preserving her own place among the continent's foremost warriors. Shimuin, Hauria, and the Divine Army

In Shimuin, Carmen is asked to join the expedition against Iris because she is considered one of the continent's strongest fighters. She does not accept a potentially fatal mission merely for excitement: conscious of her value to the clan, she plans to consult Gilead and Klein and considers leaving Ciel a will. Once Eugene declares that Iris must die, Carmen interprets his standing as Vermouth's successor and the Hero as a clan obligation, arranges contact with Ortus, and brings Ciel and Dezra into an expedition where controlled danger can become experience. During the sea campaign, Carmen commands the Lionheart ship and fights with Heaven Genocide, her condensed White Flame Formula, and a newly made left-hand gauntlet. Against Iris, she understands that she is slower and weaker than Eugene despite both having reached the Seventh Star, but continues creating pressure and combines her white flame with his transformed black flame. The campaign exposes a limit rather than a failure. Carmen returns to closed-door training, reaches the Eighth Star, and later uses a dragon-shaped transformation against the specter, resisting Destruction's mana-erasing dark power long enough to contribute to the coalition's assault. Carmen's later breakthrough carries institutional consequences. She discovers that the inherited White Flame Formula can evolve beyond Vermouth's deliberately imposed limitations and argues that its restriction to the direct line should end, sharing her realization with the wider clan. In the Divine Army she serves as a general, uses her transformation and speeches to raise morale, and stays on the battlefield while Eugene's party enters Babel. When Destruction appears, she leads the Lionhearts in striking its exterior despite knowing that the backlash will destroy her equipment and hands; their blows create small ripples and reach those trapped within. Carmen survives with shattered Heaven Genocide, broken Dragon Claw, and crushed fists, then learns that the impacts truly helped Vermouth remember himself. The knowledge turns an apparently futile stand into proof that the present generation did not leave the ancient heroes to save the world alone. In the aftermath, Vermouth asks his descendants to treat him as family rather than a distant founder. Carmen enthusiastically calls him father and later protects him from Melkith's attention, ending the war as both the clan's leading elder and a comic but sincere guardian of its newly returned ancestor. Appearance and personality

Carmen is a tall, youthful-looking woman whose age and seniority are easy to underestimate. She has ashen-gray hair, golden eyes, and visibly trained hands that mark her as a fist-fighter even beneath leather gloves. Her Black Lion dress uniform is usually less formal than those of her subordinates: she drapes the unbuttoned jacket over her shoulders and favors a crooked posture that advertises rank without conventional stiffness. In battle, her silver and black equipment develops from the image of a Silver Lion into the armored White Flame Dragon and, finally, the black-clad Grim Reaper. (Chapters 49, 347, 452, and 577)

Her defining manner is self-consciously dramatic. Carmen chews unlit cigars, repeatedly clicks a lighter, carries both a wristwatch and a pocket watch, announces weapon transformations, invents titles, and treats a carefully timed entrance as a legitimate part of morale. This behavior is not confusion about reality. She can negotiate firmly, read political consequences, keep operational secrets, and revise one of her cherished sayings when Eugene points out that lions do not actually push their cubs from cliffs. The performance is a chosen language for confidence, intimidation, and encouragement. (Chapters 49–50, 170, 211, 341, 354, and 577)

Carmen's pride centers on the Lionheart name, her appearance, her martial skill, and the good fortune she believes obliges her to benefit the world. She is strict because she expects strength to serve responsibility, but affection moderates that standard. Her protectiveness of Ciel does not become control, and her admiration of Eugene lets her follow his decisions without surrendering her own judgment. Even against Destruction, she acknowledges that her fists cannot win alone and strikes anyway so the generation outside can answer the heroes within. (Chapters 341, 347, 607–619)

Abilities and powers

Carmen is a specialist in close-range martial combat. Her lifelong training condenses mana around her body instead of producing broad, wild flames, turning punches, kicks, claws, and grappling movements into precise weapons. Heaven Genocide and Exid expand those methods, but the basis of her power remains physical technique combined with the White Flame Formula.

Martial arts and Heaven Genocide

Carmen fights primarily with her hands and feet, parrying blades barehanded and counterattacking vital points before an opponent can complete a motion. Her condensed flame runs close to the skin, reinforcing speed, impact, and durability without obscuring the exact movement of her body. This specialization also shapes her teaching: Ciel's fists and legs acquire blade-like sharpness from Carmen's instruction. Against stronger supernatural enemies, Carmen uses continuous combinations and positioning to create openings rather than relying on one decisive discharge. (Chapters 49, 78, 343, 354, and 373–375)

Heaven Genocide is a transforming right-hand weapon made from alchemical gloves and dragon materials. Its Destiny Form becomes a silver glove with cutting forearms and claws, Alastor Form becomes a heavy striking gauntlet, and a cannon-like form releases concentrated flame at range. It answers Carmen's flexible martial style, but form changes do not erase physical limits: powerful transformations can twist her fingers, Destruction-level forces can damage it, and the weapon eventually shatters after repeated attacks against the final enemy. White Flame Formula and transformation

Carmen is the only living Lionheart of her earlier generation to reach the Seventh Star of the White Flame Formula. At that stage she can contain and examine Eugene's altered flame, project highly compressed white mana, and sustain exchanges against Iris, although Eugene's unique transformation still leaves him faster and stronger. She later completes the Eighth Star after closed-door training, becoming the first descendant since Vermouth to reach that level and using recalled flames like a lion's mane to reinforce successive attacks. Her formula eventually undergoes a new metamorphosis that cannot be measured by Stars. Carmen recognizes that Vermouth intentionally left the human inheritance incomplete, finds a route past that ceiling, and spreads the result rather than monopolizing it. Her special Exid channels the change through its Dragon Heart and initially supports a White Flame Dragon form whose armor, flame, and clawed limbs act together. By the last war she has moved beyond both the Silver Lion and White Flame Dragon identities, reshaping the armor into the dark Grim Reaper form. (Chapters 452–453, 513–519, 544, and 577)

Equipment-assisted combat and limits

Carmen's Shimuin-era equipment compensates for the asymmetry of Heaven Genocide by adding a left-hand gauntlet and later integrating a Dragon Heart into a custom Exid. The resulting armor withstands Gavid's sword wind, increases her output, and creates the Dragon Claw technique from its transformed left arm. The armor does not make her invulnerable: sufficiently intense dark power damages her through reactive force, and sustained contact with Destruction ruins both the Dragon Claw and her unprotected hands. By the final campaign, Eugene's rising divinity also strengthens his anointed fighters, and Carmen's first strike manages a small ripple against Destruction's exterior. The text leaves open how much of that result comes from her recent growth and how much from Destruction's imperfect state. Her latest demonstrated limit is therefore clear: she cannot seriously wound the complete Demon King alone, but her evolved formula, equipment, leadership, and willingness to keep striking allow the wider army's effort to reach and sustain the people fighting inside. • Eugene Lionheart: Carmen recognizes Eugene's ability early, shares his taste for named techniques, and treats his growth as a challenge and a source of clan pride. She follows his decision against Iris because he bears Vermouth's legacy, later calls him the Radiant Lion, and supports his final battle by leading the family against Destruction from outside. • Ciel Lionheart: Ciel is Carmen's disciple and fulfills the maternal wish Carmen never pursued through marriage. Carmen teaches her unarmed combat, brings her into real campaigns, and respects the boundary between guidance and control when Ciel suffers romantic disappointment.
