Eward Lionheart

Eward Lionheart is the eldest son of Gilead Lionheart and Tanis, initially first in the main family's line of succession. His genuine interest in magic is undermined by limited progress, family pressure, and resentment toward more talented relatives; after an early black-magic scandal, he returns with a demonic spirit and turns that resentment into a lethal conspiracy. Biography

Aroth and the Black Lions

Eward travels to Aroth at fifteen hoping to study magic under Lovellian Sophis, but he is not accepted as Lovellian's disciple and reaches only the Third Circle after four years despite extensive family support. Ashamed of that failure and of his poor martial prospects, he withdraws into alcohol, drugs, and recurring succubus dreams. His attempt to secure power through a black-magic contract leads him to an opium den and a prepared sacrifice, where Eugene Lionheart interrupts the rite. Eward denies wanting the Patriarch's seat and says he wants freedom, but his evasions cannot prevent the consequences: the clan strips his succession rights, removes him from Aroth, and confines him under surveillance at his maternal family's estate. Three years later, Eward returns for the Lionheart hunt as a Fourth Circle wizard while secretly working with Dominic Lionheart and Hector Lionheart. He drugs and abducts Ciel, murders Tanis and the Bossar household, and offers relatives as sacrifices to strengthen a darkness spirit formed from remnants of the Demon Kings of Carnage and Cruelty. The spirit supplies demonic memories and spells, but Eward still chooses whom to betray and directs the ritual from jealousy toward Eugene. Eugene reaches him before the sacrifice can be completed and destroys his heart with holy and moonlight power, causing his transformed body to crumble and ending both Eward's life and the conspiracy's claim on the main family. Appearance and personality

As a youth, Eward has a handsome face, dull eyes, slouched shoulders, and none of the dirt, sweat, or developed calluses associated with his more martial relatives. At nineteen his posture and downcast gaze make his unease visible even before the Aroth scandal. During his final transformation, his naturally golden eyes become black with small red points, his face turns pale, and dark power distorts his body beyond its ordinary human condition. Eward truly enjoys books and magic, but he responds to disappointment through avoidance and self-deception. He wants recognition without enduring the gap between his ambitions and his ability, resents Eugene's effortless success, and repeatedly reframes deliberate choices as circumstances forced upon him. By the hunt, shame has hardened into malice: he exploits Ciel's trust, murders his own mother, and treats kin as fuel while continuing to cast himself as the person denied a fair life. Abilities and powers

Eward possesses formal Aroth magical education and eventually reaches the Fourth Circle, but his ordinary ability remains below what the main family expected after years of elite support. His later combat strength comes primarily from a contracted darkness spirit rather than from a sudden mastery of Circle magic. The distinction matters because the spirit grants knowledge and recovery that Eward's own training could not reproduce, while also accelerating his mental and physical deterioration. Circle magic and alchemy

After four years in Aroth, Eward is only a Third Circle wizard; three more years of study raise him to the Fourth Circle. He can prepare potent sedatives and use standard spells, but the corpus repeatedly contrasts his theoretical interest with slow advancement and little combat experience. Even when the darkness spirit gives him access to more sophisticated magical structures, knowledge alone does not supply the judgment or technique of a veteran wizard. (Chapters 31–38 and 140–145)

Darkness-spirit contract

The spirit that accepts Eward is born from lingering fragments of two defeated Demon Kings. It chooses him for his Lionheart blood rather than a natural elemental affinity and feeds him memories containing dark-magic knowledge. Through it he produces masses of darkness, giant grasping hands, spell bombardments, animated corpses, and a body that can reconnect after severe injury. The power is substantial enough to overwhelm ordinary opponents, but it remains a remnant rather than the full strength of either Demon King. (Chapters 140–146)

The contract does not simply possess an innocent host. Its influence corrodes Eward's thoughts and body, yet Eward retains enough agency to plan the abductions, select sacrifices, and focus his hatred on Eugene. His regeneration also has a decisive limit: Eugene's moonlight erases demonic power while divine power pierces the core of his transformed body. Once his heart is destroyed by both forces, the spirit cannot restore him. (Chapters 143–147)

Relationships

• Tanis: Tanis builds her hopes around her only son and continues searching for magical instruction after his first disgrace. Eward ultimately exploits that devotion, kills her before the hunt, and uses the Bossar household in his ritual, turning his closest source of protection into one of his victims. (Chapters 9, 38, 52, and 140–145)
• Gilead Lionheart: Gilead expects his eldest son to grow into the main family's successor but cannot bridge Eward's fear of disappointing him. After the Aroth incident, clan discipline replaces paternal trust; Eward's later murders and conspiracy permanently end any possibility of reconciliation. (Chapters 9–10, 37–38, and 140–153)
• Eugene Lionheart: Eugene embodies the talent and recognition Eward believes he lacks. He first prevents Eward's attempted contract in Aroth, then becomes the principal target of Eward's jealousy during the hunt. Their final battle ends when Eugene overcomes both the ritual's dark power and Eward's regeneration. (Chapters 34–38 and 143–147)
• Ciel Lionheart: Eward uses their family bond to approach Ciel, drug her, and prepare her as a sacrifice. Her abduction makes the conspiracy immediately personal for the Black Lions and demonstrates that Eward is willing to destroy even siblings who had not caused his disgrace. (Chapters 140–147)
• Dominic Lionheart and Hector Lionheart: Eward joins their effort to corrupt the hunt and overturn the clan's existing order. They provide the larger conspiracy in which his ritual can proceed, but the alliance is transactional; each participant pursues power through the deaths of other Lionhearts, and all are defeated before they can consolidate it. (Chapters 138–153)
• Lovellian Sophis: Eward goes to Aroth hoping to become Lovellian's disciple but receives only indirect support after failing to meet the standard. Lovellian's anger at the black-magic attempt closes Eward's place in Aroth and sharpens the humiliation that follows him into exile. (Chapters 26–38)
