Biography

Aroth and the Black Lions

Tanis loses practical control of the estate after becoming unable to bear more children, but retains the formal precedence of Gilead's first wife. She responds by placing increasingly severe expectations on Eward, insisting that he is destined to become patriarch and pushing him toward opportunities in Aroth even when he fears her scrutiny. As Eward's failures and Eugene's success weaken that ambition, Tanis withdraws with her son to her relatives' home and continues controlling his attempt to return to clan life. Eward ultimately murders Tanis, Count Bossar, and the household servants as part of his descent into black magic, ending the succession project she had pursued through him. Appearance and personality

Tanis initially carries herself with a relatively calm expression appropriate to the official first wife. Years of isolation and anxiety leave her with dark circles, sallow cheeks, and a desolate appearance. She is proud, temperamental, suspicious of rivals, and intensely ambitious for Eward, but her pressure becomes controlling enough that her son fears her and learns to equate her approval with his own worth. Abilities and powers

The selected evidence does not establish Tanis as a warrior, wizard, or user of any supernatural power. Her influence is social and domestic: formal precedence as first wife, authority over the main household when recognized, and pressure over Eward's education and claim to succession.
