Jenne

Jenne is a countryside-raised noblewoman, the elder sister of Keane, and a longtime member of Linley Baruch’s extended household. Her decision to seek an escort helps her brother survive a contested return to Cerre City, while her loyalty keeps her beside him through the resulting political transition. She later leaves Cerre to travel with Linley’s companions, serves in the Baruch Empire’s administration, and becomes a seventh-rank water-style magus and instructor. Biography

The O'Brien Empire And New Companions

Jenne enters the O’Brien Empire with Keane and their guardian Lambert, hoping to restore her brother to the prefectural governorship once held by their father. Although educated as a noblewoman, she has spent years doing household work after her mother and the two children were expelled to a mountain village. Recognizing the danger of traveling without protection, Jenne gathers the courage to ask the stranger she knows as “Ley” for help. She speaks honestly when he tests her promised payment, and her successful request gives the siblings the escort they need against repeated assassins. (Chapters 178–183).

The attacks reveal that their aunt’s control of Cerre makes the succession far more dangerous than Jenne and Keane understood. Jenne warns Linley that protecting her may not be worth the risk and tells him he need not continue, but she accepts his aid when he insists. After another assassination attempt, she and Keane directly ask him how they should proceed rather than pretending they can manage alone. Linley’s protection carries them into Cerre, where Madame Wade’s death leaves Keane in control and turns the formerly obscure siblings into the focus of nobles seeking influence through gifts and loyalty. Political security does not end the pressure on Jenne. At a Jacques clan gathering, Albert tries to use Keane’s governorship to force a marriage and later attempts to enter Jenne’s room, but she rejects him and is protected by guards arranged by her brother. Jenne initially stays because she wants more time with Keane, whom she has cared for like a mother, then chooses to leave with Linley’s group. Her position changes from a threatened claimant’s sister to a voluntary companion who travels with Rebecca and Leena through the O’Brien Empire and shares the group’s passage by ship. Appearance and personality

At eighteen, Jenne is slender and extraordinarily beautiful, with a complexion compared to a flower petal floating in clear water. She commonly blushes and struggles with unfamiliar social situations, yet her coarse hands reveal years of cooking and household labor that her noble clothing and manners do not. Decades later, she wears water-blue magus robes, and sustained magical training has kept age from visibly marking her face. (Chapters 178–180, 222, 395).

Jenne is gentle, honest, and deeply protective of Keane. She takes responsibility for his everyday care, refuses to conceal the family’s limited means when Linley questions her, and worries about exposing him to danger even when his help is essential. Her early shyness does not prevent firm decisions: she rejects Albert, leaves Cerre when she chooses, and later earns a demanding administrative reputation before pursuing the work she enjoys as a teacher. Abilities and cultivation

Jenne trains in water-style magic. She is explicitly a magus of the third rank during the conflict with Albert, but no combat spell or offensive use is demonstrated in those scenes; guards rather than Jenne’s cultivation stop his intrusion. Over the following thirty-plus years she works diligently enough to reach the seventh rank, a level the narrative treats as fully sufficient for employment as a magus instructor. • Linley Baruch: Jenne asks Linley to escort the siblings, trusts his judgment during the assassinations, and later joins his traveling household.
