Keane travels with Jenne and Lambert to assert his Jacques-family claim in Cerre, where Madame Wade's faction tries to have all three killed. Proud and impatient, he wants to confront the problem directly, but Linley's presence saves the siblings from Holmer's poisoned ambush and the later political trap. At fourteen Keane rejects a proposed two-year delay and becomes governor with Jenne and Lambert administering beside him.
