Lambert travels as the siblings' fiercely loyal retainer, alert to the succession threat waiting in Cerre and prepared to die if that will preserve them. He reacts quickly during the poisoned escort disaster, recognizes the danger represented by Holmer and Madame Wade's network, and monitors the castle rather than assuming arrival means safety. Once Keane becomes governor, Lambert exchanges the road-worn role of guard for that of a sharply dressed household administrator, continuing the same service through governance.
