Daphne

Daphne is a dryad druid and one of the children of the Demon King's concubines. A specialist in healing and spirit magic, she becomes a recurring rear-line member of In-gong's expeditions and later the principal companion and field assistant of the master smith Amita.

Biography

Healer of the Expedition

Daphne is first named among the talented children of the concubines whom In-gong hopes to recruit, then meets him through Felicia, who introduces her as Echo's daughter and a gifted druid. Her fascination with Green Wind and the Enger Plains crisis gives her an immediate reason to join the northern investigation. Although frightened by Balkarova, she persists with Spirit Enlightenment, placing suitable life and wind spirits in the party to raise their capabilities; the spell materially strengthens the fighters, but its effort leaves her dependent on the others' protection and recovery. (Chapters 37, 53, and 55–58)

Thereafter Daphne becomes a dependable ritual and reconnaissance specialist. She uses herbal knowledge and spirit power to help Caitlin and In-gong absorb Moonlight Extract, calls desperately on the spirits when their reactions become abnormal, and later reads the surrounding spirits' fear to warn that Spider Forest will become dangerous at night. She also carries Amita toward the last flame during the forest attack and joins the palace expedition that defeats the auction-house raiders, consistently choosing the support position from which her healing and spirit work can sustain the group. (Chapters 80, 86, 91, 98, and 116)

Support through the Final Campaigns

Daphne's partnership with Amita turns her support role into part of the coalition's logistics. She persuades the reluctant smith to accompany In-gong to the barbarian front, promising sweets but also appealing to Amita's concern about leaving her alone on a dangerous battlefield. She helps conceal supplies with light and water spirits, follows Amita to the workshop as their helper, and later distributes boxes of Amita-made equipment. Her affection is practical as well as personal: she carries, feeds, calms, and negotiates with Amita while ensuring that their work reaches the fighters who need it. (Chapters 119, 133, 145, 175, and 186)

In the final northern campaigns, Daphne continues supplying battlefield survival rather than seeking direct duels. When Beatrice's climate magic steadies the distorted magical flow beyond the Northern Limit Line, Daphne and Felicia summon earth spirits to excavate and conceal a large underground shelter; the environmental prerequisite shows that the feat is not freely available in the region's normal conditions. She later prepares several recovery spells while Amita guards her with the last flame. Daphne survives the conflict and stands smiling behind Amita and the Sword Duke at In-gong's coronation. (Chapters 208, 212, and 231)

Appearance and personality

Daphne is a young dryad with green skin and blue hair, described on her formal introduction as a beautiful girl resembling a storybook illustration. In the following year she is seventeen. The corpus does not describe plant growths or other stereotypical dryad features, so none can be assumed. She later wears green protective clothing embroidered by Amita with complex magical patterns. (Chapters 40, 53, and 105)

She is gentle, gracious, and easily excited by rare spirits, but remains useful under pressure even when visibly afraid. Daphne's patience is particularly effective with Amita: an affectionate voice, an embrace, or a carefully chosen appeal can settle the smith's temper when demands from others only make them resist. Her caretaking is not passivity; she repeatedly volunteers for dangerous journeys and calmly steers Amita toward work the coalition needs. (Chapters 53, 56, 99, 105, 119, and 186)

Powers and abilities

As both a dryad and a druid, Daphne is unusually sensitive to spirits. She can communicate with them, interpret their emotions, summon them with chants, and combine their functions with another spirit user. Her Spirit Enlightenment is an advanced enhancement spell that invites the spirit best suited to a recipient into the body and raises that person's capabilities. In-gong uniquely receives two spirits at once because of his own constitution; this is not presented as Daphne's normal output. (Chapters 56, 80, and 86)

Daphne knows healing, recovery magic, herbal medicine, and large-scale support magic. She helps an unusual medicine absorb safely, prepares multiple recovery spells in mass combat, assists Felicia in making reflective spirit mirrors, and jointly excavates an underground shelter through earth spirits. These powers require concentration, magical expenditure, and a cooperative environment: she can faint after severe strain, needs protection while preparing healing, and cannot summon the relevant earth spirits until the local magic flow has been stabilized. (Chapters 56, 67, 80, 119, 208, and 212)

Relationships

  • In-gong: Daphne joins his expedition because of its connection to Green Wind and becomes one of the support specialists he repeatedly entrusts with healing, rituals, concealment, and logistics. He values her as essential during the final confrontation, and she remains part of his household circle through his coronation. (Chapters 53–59, 80, 119, 208, 226, and 231)
  • Amita: Daphne is Amita's closest attendant and workshop helper. She carries and comforts the small smith, helps with magical embroidery and equipment distribution, and can persuade them to travel or work without overriding their choices. Amita in turn goes to battle for Daphne's sake and protects her while she prepares recovery magic. (Chapters 99, 105, 119, 145, 186, and 212)
  • Felicia: Felicia introduces Daphne to In-gong and repeatedly works beside her as a healer and spirit magician. Their complementary magic supports both battlefield recovery and non-combat feats such as concealing supplies and building the northern shelter. (Chapters 53, 119, 124, 208, and 212)
  • Karma: Karma protects and carries Daphne when the druid is exhausted, celebrates with her after Balkarova's defeat, and later continues alongside her in In-gong's household. Their early teamwork establishes the protective formation that lets Daphne use demanding magic from the rear. (Chapters 56–59, 86, 99, 191, and 226)

Items

  • No notable personal item is included in Daphne's finalized inventory. Amita makes her protective clothing and Daphne helps transport coalition equipment, but the corpus does not assign her a separately catalogued artifact or transfer ownership of the equipment she handles. (Chapters 100, 105, and 145)
