Yeon Wei — A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation

Yeon Wei is an ancient lightning cultivator and strategist in A Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation. Once a senior figure of the Golden Divine Heavenly Thunder Sect, she survives later eras as a soul hidden in her descendant Yeon Jin, carrying knowledge of the Heavenly Lightning Banner, inter-realm routes, and the sect’s suppressed history. Her betrayal, curse, and long separation from Hon Won are revealed as a fate manipulated by Great Mountain. Seo Eun-hyun’s intervention lets the two recover their memories and choose a final reconciliation.

Biography

The ancestor inside Yeon Jin

Yeon Wei first reveals herself from within Yeon Jin, reshaping her descendant’s body as she takes control. She identifies herself as a former Golden Divine ancestor who entered Thundercloud Pavilion, divulged the sect’s central methods, and survived retribution from the Heavenly Lightning Banner by hiding in the younger cultivator’s soul. Her current body is therefore a vessel shared with a separate descendant, not proof that Yeon Jin and Yeon Wei are the same person. (Chapters 167–171)

Her history makes her both criminal and guardian in relation to the sect. Jin Byuk-ho condemns the betrayal that damaged its standing, while Yeon Wei insists that her actions forty thousand years earlier answered a disaster surrounding the Banner’s seals. Their battle demonstrates the Taiji Quaking Lightning Body at its prime: she manifests a two-headed ghost, consumes and returns lightning, and presses the Banner’s six-colored Thunder God until a loosened seal changes the struggle. Her soul escapes apparent bodily destruction by answering a prepared resurrection body. (Chapters 207–223)

Yeon Wei later works with Seo because their needs intersect. She understands the Banner, Hon Won’s condition, the True Devil Realm, and the Void Spirit Pond route, while Seo can protect Yeon Jin and move the group toward the Head Realm. She is evasive, mischievous, and willing to conceal dangerous details, but she also preserves commitments after easier escape becomes possible. Her value comes as much from old knowledge and formation judgment as from the power she can force through a borrowed vessel. (Chapters 245–269)

Guiding the descent and the Wuji survivors

When Seo and Jeon Myeong-hoon must descend, Yeon Wei remains hidden near the Void Spirit Pond and maintains the formations needed for their return. She moves from Yeon Jin into Seo’s Blood Body, forcibly aligns its consciousness and cultivation, and repeatedly uses a Longevity Formation to repair the vessel while raising it to Heavenly Being-class output. Once the body stabilizes, she grasps the flow between realms and physically carries the others through the dimensional rift. (Chapters 265–280)

The descent becomes an endurance trial rather than a clean escape. Yeon Wei distributes heavenly tribulation through the Consoling Lightning Ritual and the Golden Divine disciples, bleeding as the hurriedly synchronized body breaks under incompatible wavelengths. She briefly falls when the vessel can no longer sustain her, then reappears through Yeon Jin to block scattered tribulation. Jeon protects her as family, making the old ancestor part of the living sect community rather than merely a repository of forbidden knowledge. (Chapters 265–280)

In the Nether Ghost and Ancient Force eras, Yeon Wei becomes a recurring formation adviser and strategist for Seo’s wider coalition. She helps evaluate routes, formations, memories, and the Mad Lord operation, and remains involved through conflicts where direct combat is not the only measure of usefulness. Her mistrust and lies can exhaust her companions, but Seo continues to call her a comrade because she repeatedly stays with dangerous plans whose success protects people beyond her own descendant. Fate, recovered memory, and reconciliation

During Seo Hweol’s rebellion, Yeon Wei and Hon Won are captured and moved as parts of a larger arrangement. Seo uses Yeon’s Play, the Canvas of Myriad Forms and Connections, and the Phenomena Extinguishing Mantra to manifest the miserable fate assigned to them and declare it already fulfilled. The contradiction breaks Great Mountain’s prophecy without killing them at that moment, restoring the memories and twisted conditions that had kept their ancient relationship buried beneath hatred. Hon Won uses his restored Great Mountain Splitting Emperor Technique against Oh Hye-seo, spends his true origin, and finds Yeon Wei after her soul returns to a prepared body. She curses him and recounts the political marriage, betrayal, and resentment that separated them, while he uses Sunshine of Various Omens to extend her last moments. Their exchange reveals that neither the old violence nor the years of hatred were imaginary, but that the love Great Mountain distorted also survived within both of them. (Chapter 532)

Yeon Wei refuses further rescue and chooses to remain in Hon Won’s arms as the burning palace collapses. The two die holding hands, their souls and life forces exhausted, and the later narrative confirms their deaths as part of Great Mountain’s broken yet still consequential plan. Yeon Jin eventually inherits Penglai Palace and preserves the family meaning Yeon Wei chose for her surname, while Yeon Wei herself does not return as an active cultivator. (Chapters 532, 537, 562)

Appearance and personality

Yeon Wei commonly appears through vessels rather than an independent stable body. When she takes over Yeon Jin, the descendant’s physique shifts into a female form; her full combat manifestation is a two-headed giant ghost with disheveled black-and-white hair. She later occupies Seo’s Blood Body and forces it into a completely female configuration while synchronizing its wavelengths. These changes express the Taiji Quaking Lightning Body and possession mechanics, not a change in Yeon Jin’s own identity. (Chapters 167–171, 207–223, 265–280)

She is cunning, teasing, paranoid, abrasive, and frequently economical with the truth. Yeon Wei enjoys frightening younger cultivators and treats gender transformation with far less concern than the vessels do. Yet she is also technically perceptive, loyal under pressure, and capable of sustaining dangerous formations until her body fails. Her final reconciliation does not make her suddenly gentle: she voices forty-five thousand years of resentment before freely choosing the person beside whom she wants to die. Abilities and cultivation

Taiji Quaking Lightning Body

The Taiji Quaking Lightning Body circulates Yin and Yang through lightning and bodily transformation. Yeon Wei can shift a vessel’s sex, manifest multiple heads or arms, consume lightning, and return the absorbed force. At its strongest, the method lets her two-headed ghost contest Jin Byuk-ho’s Banner-backed Thunder God. She also uses its Yin-Yang structure as a curse, knotting Hon Won’s Taiji circulation and forcing his apparent Integration strength down until he can recover within Heaven-Earth Palace. (Chapters 167–171, 207–223, 245)

The method exacts costs. Cursing Hon Won requires Yeon Wei to sacrifice cultivation, and borrowed bodies must be synchronized with her consciousness before they can sustain her output. A hurried alignment makes the Blood Body repeatedly disintegrate and later leaves her bleeding from every orifice under tribulation. Her transformations do not overwrite the vessel’s personal identity, and her death in Chapter 532 ends her active use of the method even though its principles remain known within the sect. Soul transfer, formations, and inter-realm guidance

Yeon Wei can hide deep within a descendant’s soul, flee a destroyed body toward a prepared resurrection vessel, and temporarily occupy another compatible body. She combines this with formation expertise: Longevity energy repairs a collapsing vessel, the Consoling Lightning Ritual distributes tribulation, and linked barriers gather life force. These techniques let her keep Seo alive, turn a Nascent Soul Blood Body into a temporary Heavenly Being-class guide, and preserve a group crossing between realms. (Chapters 207–223, 265–280)

Possession is conditional rather than unrestricted immortality. She needs a vessel or resurrection arrangement, synchronization can fail, the Heavenly Lightning Banner can injure her soul directly, and her final life force can be exhausted beyond recovery. Her knowledge of dimensional flows and the Head Realm remains one of her most valuable capabilities after raw combat becomes secondary. Her latest state is nevertheless death: no later formation or descendant appearance establishes that Yeon Wei’s soul survived Chapter 532. (Chapters 207–223, 265–280, 532–562)

Relationships

Hon Won: Former political fiancé, ancient enemy, and enduring beloved. Great Mountain twists their history into betrayal and obsession; recovered memory lets them acknowledge both the harm and the love before choosing to die together.
Seo Eun-hyun: Suspicious ally and eventual comrade. Seo relies on Yeon Wei’s knowledge and formations, later rewrites the calamity assigned to her and Hon Won, and mourns their chosen deaths.
Jeon Myeong-hoon: Descendant of her former sect and battlefield family. Jeon protects Yeon Wei during heavenly tribulation and receives guidance shaped by her knowledge of the Golden Divine lineage.
Yeon Jin: Descendant and recurring vessel. Yeon Wei hides in his soul and transforms his body while in control, but Yeon Jin remains a separate man who later inherits Penglai Palace.
Jin Byuk-ho: Sect leader who regards her as its greatest betrayer. Their Banner-backed battle ends her prepared body but fails to prevent her soul’s escape.
