Golden Compass
The Golden Compass is the second navigational component in the search for the Trident of the Sea God, becoming useful only after the seven pieces of the Destiny Sea Chart have been assembled.
History
The completed chart points toward Erta Ale, but Mikaro's faster force reaches the island first. The candidates in his party turn on him, and Gaul emerges after Mikaro's death as the compass's first confirmed holder. Gaul then uses concealment to keep it away from Du Ge, forcing the rival coalitions into a struggle over the only reliable route to the trident. After Gaul is eliminated in the ensuing conflict, Du Ge recovers the compass and follows its needle aboard Enke until it stops over open sea, establishing that the trident lies below. Abilities and properties
The compass supplies direction rather than transport or protection. It does not eliminate the need for the chart, the Feather of the Sea God, provisions, or a force capable of surviving rival claimants. Du Ge jokes that he could smash it and let Mans repair it to improve Mans's ranking, but the compass is not actually shown damaged or repaired. Its needle gives a stable destination for an artifact that probability-based searching alone cannot locate, although the bearer must still descend through crushing deep-sea pressure to reach it.
