An honest repairman in a pirate alliance

Mans emerges from a ship carrying a hammer and covered in paint and wood chips, openly admitting that he is a contestant rather than attempting a deception Du Ge would likely expose. He asks for an alliance and proves his value by restoring the damaged Destiny Sea Chart, a feat that reverses his decline and raises him to tenth place. His candor and practical usefulness persuade Du Ge to protect him even after Mans foolishly reveals too much about his ability. (Chapters 171–172)

Because Repair is auxiliary rather than offensive, Mans depends on Du Ge's fleet for survival while the fleet depends on him to keep ships operational. Du Ge offers to damage the Golden Compass so Mans can repair it again if his ranking falls and later gives him Peace's position to secure his top-ten place. Mans responds with loyalty, restoring “Sea Fish” to his name and accepting the dangers that come with joining one of the battlefield's strongest factions. (Chapters 176, 178, 180–182)
