Xin Yan

Xin Yan is Wu Kong Sword Sect's sternest elder, its strongest sword combatant, and the specialist who teaches Wei Sheng. His Ice Dragon Sword path also becomes an unintended model for Zuo Mo, whose observation of Xin Yan's sword essence helps form a very different cultivation path.

Biography

Wu Kong's sword and forge master

Xin Yan is introduced through his disciples' forging work and soon appears beside Pei Yuan Ran and Yan Le as one of Wu Kong's senior generation. He has refined the fourth-grade Ice Dragon Sword Scripture until its performance reaches fifth-grade quality, while his disciples supply the sect's rare forging expertise. When Wei Sheng's zhuji phenomenon reveals extraordinary sword talent, Xin Yan joins Pei Yuan Ran in opening the ancestral Sword Cave and then teaches Wei Sheng step by step. The decision concentrates sect resources around the disciple most likely to recover the complete Void Sword inheritance. (Chapters 4, 8, 15, 23–29, 48)

Xin Yan's standards make him both protector and terror to the younger disciples. He recognizes the tidal structure in Zuo Mo's improvised sword essence, accurately diagnoses the instability caused by merging incompatible essences, and argues that broader sword study might let Zuo Mo reconstruct a new path. He then helps build a five-essence formation centered on his own sword essence and drops Zuo Mo inside to force focused cultivation. The method is coercive, but it is not casual cruelty: Xin Yan watches for passive resistance, plans around Zuo Mo's body cultivation, and provides a formation whose pressures regenerate rather than a single uncontrolled strike. Expansion and the sect's destruction

After the Sword Test Conference raises Wu Kong's standing, Xin Yan becomes the point of its outward military pressure. He defeats seven experts in one night, leads Wei Sheng and Luo Li in campaigns, and makes the Ice Dragon Sword name feared across Sky Moon Jie. His combat success protects the sect's rapid expansion, but it cannot shield Wu Kong once Kun Lun takes control of the war against invading mo battalions. Kun Lun forces the elders to the front and later abandons the restrained disciples. Later narration treats the sect leader and shishu as dead, leaving Xin Yan's death off-page but establishing that he does not survive Wu Kong's destruction. (Chapters 165–170, 570, 802, 824)

Appearance and personality

Xin Yan is a thin older man described as solid as steel, with icy eyes and imposing sword essence. His usual expression is stern and wooden, and his dark severity makes disciples feel as if a blade is pressed behind them. The rare joy of Wei Sheng's breakthrough gives him a slight flush, while battle causes the cold light in his eyes to sharpen. The corpus does not provide a detailed description of his hair or ordinary clothing. (Chapters 15, 23, 33, 138)

He is laconic, decisive, severe, and intensely orthodox about the sword. His replies are often one or two words, and he prefers direct action to explanation. Yet his attention to Wei Sheng's foundation, concern over Zuo Mo's impure sword essence, and willingness to spend sect resources show careful judgment beneath the intimidation. He also possesses practical forging knowledge that complicates his declaration that a sword xiu should cultivate only the sword. (Chapters 26, 54–61, 127–165)

Abilities and cultivation

Ice Dragon Sword Scripture

Xin Yan's fourth-grade scripture has been refined through his own comprehension until observers judge its effect comparable to fifth grade. Its sword essence consists of countless fine, snow-white icicle essences moving like a tide; gathered together, they manifest as an ice dragon. This construction combines broad pressure with innumerable cutting points and is strong enough that even other jindan experts regard Xin Yan as one of Dong Fu's foremost fighters. It remains a sword path requiring long cultivation rather than a spell Zuo Mo can copy merely by seeing its shape. (Chapters 15, 27–29, 37, 45, 48)

Sword instruction and formation use

Xin Yan can analyze the purity, structure, and possible progression of another cultivator's sword essence. His instruction of Wei Sheng supplies the secure foundation beneath the complete Void Sword Scripture, while his treatment of Zuo Mo uses an environmental formation because Zuo Mo will not voluntarily follow a conventional sword curriculum. In the five-essence formation, Xin Yan's essence guards the center and regenerates through nine ling springs; brute force is dangerous even for jindan. The setup depends on four other expert essences and a formation specialist, so it is not Xin Yan's solitary technique. (Chapters 24–26, 127, 136, 163–165, 370)

Forging and fire

Xin Yan and his disciples form Wu Kong's forging lineage. He possesses fourth-grade Green Mulberry Fire, recognizes rare fire sources, maintains records, and can reliably identify a soul-tethered talisman. The source emphasizes that disciple Xu Yi is the generation's active forging talent, while Xin Yan's own fame comes primarily from the sword; it does not document Xin Yan personally forging a named late-series treasure. Relationships

Wei Sheng

Wei Sheng is formally Pei Yuan Ran's disciple but receives his detailed sword instruction from Xin Yan. Xin Yan helps open the Sword Cave, teaches him personally, and leads him in later campaigns. Wei Sheng's secure fundamentals and recovery of Void Sword are consequently products of both his exceptional effort and Xin Yan's disciplined instruction. (Chapters 23–26, 48, 136, 166, 370)

Zuo Mo

Zuo Mo fears Xin Yan long before receiving direct instruction because Pu Yao repeatedly cuts his consciousness with a preserved trace of Xin Yan's sword essence. Xin Yan later discovers that Zuo Mo independently comprehended its tidal principle and tries to direct that talent into orthodox sword cultivation. Their relationship mixes recognition with frustration: Xin Yan sees unusual ability, while Zuo Mo repeatedly prefers formations, forging, and body cultivation. (Chapters 27–43, 120–165)

The Wu Kong elders

Pei Yuan Ran supplies authority, Yan Le commerce, Shi Feng Rong dan-making, and Xin Yan military strength and forging. They grew up together and coordinate major decisions, from examining Pu Yao's trace to opening the Sword Cave and expanding the sect. Their complementary roles make Wu Kong stronger than its size suggests, but all remain vulnerable to Kun Lun's political control of the larger war. (Chapters 15–26, 51–56, 120–170, 570)
