Pei Yuan Ran

Pei Yuan Ran is the leader of Wu Kong Sword Sect and the senior figure among its four jindan elders. He tries to rebuild an impoverished sect through Wei Sheng and Zuo Mo, balancing affection for his disciples against limited resources, an orthodox belief in sword cultivation, and political pressure from powers far larger than Wu Kong.

Biography

Rebuilding Wu Kong Sword Sect through its disciples

Pei Yuan Ran first appears investigating the strange yao energy around Wu Kong Mountain with Xin Yan and Yan Le. Wei Sheng's extraordinary zhuji breakthrough soon convinces him that the declining sect has found a disciple capable of restoring its inheritance. Pei opens the dangerous Sword Cave, supplies food and medicine, and makes an exception to ordinary rules so Wei Sheng can pursue its legacy. He also accepts Zuo Mo as an inner disciple, places him under Shi Feng Rong, and grants West Wind Valley, thereby turning two unusual outer disciples into the central hopes of the next generation. His stewardship is pragmatic but uneven. Pei insists that the sect pay market price for Zuo Mo's Golden Crow Pills so useful service does not become resentment, yet scarcity compels him to place most resources behind Wei Sheng. When Shi Feng Rong objects, he opens the sect's scrolls to all inner disciples as compensation. He later spends half the sect's assets on a sword-essence formation intended to redirect Zuo Mo from formations and body cultivation toward orthodox sword practice. The decision reflects confidence in Zuo Mo's talent and anxiety about succession, but also his failure to recognize that Zuo Mo's mixed disciplines are not merely distractions. Retreat, compromise, and Kun Lun's pressure

As Sky Moon Jie collapses, Pei chooses institutional survival over retrieving Zuo Mo from Desolate Wood Reef. He argues that all four jindan elders are required to establish the sect in Bright Wave Jie and promises they can search later, despite Shi Feng Rong's anguish. He also questions Lin Qian's motives even while accepting the help that makes evacuation possible. This is the defining cost of his leadership: he can preserve the sect only by leaving a disciple behind, and the source does not present that trade as either simple betrayal or uncomplicated wisdom. The later history of Wu Kong Sword Sect reveals that Pei continued shielding Zuo Mo in less visible ways. After Wei Sheng disappears, Pei's hair turns white overnight. Suspecting Zuo Mo's yaomo origins, he deliberately avoids summoning him because contact could force the sect to surrender him to Kun Lun. Pei also resists Kun Lun's demand that the elders serve at the front, especially because Shi Feng Rong is poorly suited to direct battle. Kun Lun surrounds the sect until the elders yield, then breaks the condition meant to protect their disciples. Pei's fate after this forced deployment is not recorded. (Chapters 328, 570)

Appearance and personality

Pei Yuan Ran has a square face, a long beard, and a naturally stern, authoritative presence. He can speak warmly and diplomatically, but his commands immediately quiet the sect. The pressure following Wei Sheng's disappearance is made visible when his hair turns white in a single night. (Chapters 15, 23, 34, 570)

He is measured, cautious, and strongly concerned with continuity. Pei rewards merit, accepts correction, and reminds young disciples to preserve their lives, yet he can subordinate individuals to what he believes the sect requires. His choices are constrained by poverty and stronger political powers, but he remains accountable for them: the same leader who protects Zuo Mo from Kun Lun also leaves him behind during the earlier evacuation. Abilities and cultivation

Pei Yuan Ran is a jindan sword xiu. He and Xin Yan open the sealed Sword Cave, and his sword essence contributes to the multi-elder formation built around Zuo Mo. His voice can carry the Clear Sound Incantation, calming a panicked disciple and clearing the listener's mind. The corpus does not identify a personal sword or a named offensive technique for him, so his direct combat style and comparative battlefield strength remain unspecified. His most consequential ability is leadership under scarcity. Pei allocates medicine, scriptures, land, and sect assets; negotiates between forceful elders; evaluates outside assistance; and chooses where the jindan cultivators are strategically indispensable. Those decisions cannot overcome every constraint. Wu Kong's poverty drives unequal support, the migration forces abandonment, and Kun Lun's power eventually strips him of control over his own deployment and the safety terms he sought for the disciples. Relationships

Wei Sheng

Wei Sheng is Pei Yuan Ran's disciple and his clearest hope for reviving Wu Kong Sword Sect's sword inheritance. Pei responds to Wei Sheng's zhuji phenomenon with tears and a vow before the ancestors, then commits exceptional resources and opens the Sword Cave. Wei Sheng's later disappearance devastates him, but the scale of that investment also explains tensions when other disciples appear to receive less. (Chapters 23–26, 61, 89, 570)

Zuo Mo

Pei says he found and brought Zuo Mo to the sect, although Zuo Mo's earlier origins remain unknown. He promotes him, pays fairly for his production, recognizes his sword talent, and later keeps silent rather than expose him to Kun Lun. At the same time, Pei distrusts the mystery around his birth, tries to impose an orthodox sword path, and leaves him behind during evacuation. Their relationship is therefore protective but paternalistic, shaped by genuine care and institutional calculation together. (Chapters 34, 54, 61, 89, 163–196, 570)

Shi Feng Rong, Xin Yan, and Yan Le

Pei leads through consultation with the other three elders. Xin Yan supplies martial severity, Yan Le handles commercial affairs, and Shi Feng Rong repeatedly presses Pei to defend her disciples. Pei does not simply overrule them: he compromises on resources and the Wu Kong Flag, relies on their combined jindan power, and ultimately shares their forced deployment under Kun Lun. Items

Pei Yuan Ran has no confirmed personal notable item. The Wu Kong Flag is forged by the sect elders for Zuo Mo and transferred to Zuo Mo after Shi Feng Rong's intervention; it should not be treated as Pei's personal weapon. The Sword Cave is a sect inheritance site rather than a portable possession. (Chapters 26, 186)
