The Grand Examination

Zhuang enters the Grand Examination as Heavenly Dao Academy's foremost student, but his fall to eleventh on the Proclamation of Azure Clouds and a run of weak opponents leave him eager to prove that he has improved. Drawn against Chen, he attacks with fierce true essence and the academy's sword methods, yet Chen's unusual reserves and direct counters overturn his advantage. The unexpected loss leaves Zhuang pallid and unable to accept the result, transforming an institutional rivalry into a personal grievance that later contributes to his destructive choices after the Garden of Zhou. Appearance and personality

Zhuang is plain rather than striking, with simple, meticulously clean clothes and restrained manners. He is normally quiet, proud, and self-controlled; after hardship in the Garden, torn clothing, grass on his face, and a missing shoe reflect the collapse of that carefully maintained composure. Abilities and cultivation

His reputation rests on strong divine sense, abundant true essence, and Heavenly Dao Academy swordplay. In the examination he produces brilliant green sword light and sustained attacks, but Chen's movement and improvised staff technique expose limits in his adaptability. Relationships

  • Chen Changsheng: Zhuang sees Chen's examination victory as an intolerable reversal and later supports Liang Xiaoxiao's accusation from the Garden. His death deepens the Heavenly Dao Academy's hostility toward Chen. (Chapters 160–180 and 356–404)
