Shar
Shar is the former Mistress of the Night from the World of Gods who abandons godhood, becomes a Magus, and takes control of the Shadow World. Her fusion with the Shadow Weave and much of the World Will makes her the central opponent of the Snake Dowager during the struggle for that world.
Biography
Abandoning divinity
Shar begins as an intermediate goddess of night, shadows, and magic in the World of Gods. The destruction of her worshippers and divine realm removes the normal foundations of godhood, but also frees her from the dependence she comes to regard as a cage. Rather than decay with her faith, she undergoes the painful change from deity to Magus. She enters the Shadow World weakened, gains the favour of its World Will, recovers rapidly through origin force, and drives out the native Snake Dowager. (Chapter 1067)
The conversion changes the source and direction of her power. Former divine knowledge gives her a sophisticated understanding of shadow and distributed magic, while the Magus path permits an individual pursuit of truth without worship. It does not preserve every advantage of immortality or instantly make her peak rank 8. Shar spends thousands of years adapting to the new world, rooting herself into its origin, and eliminating active law-beings who could contest her ascent. (Chapters 1067 and 1081)
Building the Shadow Empire
Shar transforms the Shadow World into a technologically ordered empire surrounded by warning systems and threaded through the Shadow Weave. Citizens receive standardised supernatural access, officials administer it, and the network records the very activity that could produce a threat. Civilisation therefore advances while remaining spiritually dependent on a system Shar can monitor and restrict. Weak mental development makes ordinary people particularly vulnerable to soul attacks, while mutants and ancient bloodlines are purged because they might eventually produce independent law-beings. (Chapters 1068–1080)
The empire is also a centuries-long mechanism for taking the World Will. The will is formed from the collective conscients of life as well as the natural world; by shaping bloodlines, minds, institutions, and magical access, Shar gradually corrodes that collective from inside. She controls more than half of it before the open conflict begins. The uncontrolled remainder resists assimilation and divides her attention, showing that influence over a majority is not the same as complete fusion. (Chapters 1090–1091)
Leylin discovers the Weave’s weakness
Leylin Farlier infiltrates the empire, analyses the Shadow Weave, and confirms the ruler’s identity. Shar identifies his bloodline and follows an energy body’s aura toward the distant main body, demonstrating that destroying a projection could gravely injure or kill its controller. Leylin answers with a deterrent: Shar built the Weave alone, their existences are inseparably connected, and the Karsus’ Avatar model could strip it from her. She withdraws rather than risk the system on which both her government and advancement depend. (Chapters 1079–1081)
Their later negotiations are performances covering incompatible goals. Shar allows opposition to uncover Project X and work on the Tree of Life because rebels concentrate the bloodlines, conscients, and revived native powers she needs in one place. Apparent administrative corruption and resistance are not all under perfect control, but she is willing to use both as labour and bait. Leylin and the Snake Dowager recognise that the resulting soul structure is meant to purify the World Will into something Shar can consume. (Chapters 1090–1091 and 1102–1104)
Turning an ambush into nourishment
Trial’s Eye, Yuri, and Massa attack Shar outside the Shadow World, where she risks an avatar carrying most of her strength. She draws the attackers back into the world despite the difficulty of transporting rank 8 beings and then activates accumulated origin force as the representative of its Will. Shar rises close to peak rank 8 while the foreign attackers are suppressed, reversing a three-against-one assault. She devours or kills key opponents and uses their power to offset part of the world’s expenditure. (Chapters 1095–1098)
The victory is costly to the Shadow World. Shar forces expansion without the origin reserves and civilisation needed for a true advancement, squandering accumulated force and leaving the world weakened. The tactic wins the immediate battle, but it reduces the resource base supporting her longer plan and gives Leylin and the Dowager a narrower window in which to act. (Chapters 1096–1098)
The World Fruit and failed fusion
When the Snake Dowager returns with Kalle and Kou, Shar reveals that she anticipated their bloodline resurrection. The Shadow Weave regenerates while supplied by the world, wraps hostile laws, and lets Shar suppress the Dowager like prey in a web. Yet the Dowager still carries a native fraction of the World Will. Without that missing authority, Shar can never assemble a complete will or secure permanent peak rank 8, which is why she must capture rather than merely drive her rival away. (Chapters 1104–1106)
The Tree of Life gathers conscients and reverses origin into a World Fruit representing the complete Will. Eating it would complete Shar’s path of control, but connecting the tree to the Weave creates a shared point of failure. Leylin casts Karsus’ Avatar and takes the Shadow Weave from her at the decisive moment. Shar loses the instrument that coordinates the ritual, while Leylin takes the World Fruit and divides authority over the world under a new contract. The plan fails because its efficient integration leaves the entire system vulnerable to a specialised takeover. (Chapters 1106–1108)
Survival and the Final War
Shar survives the loss rather than being destroyed with the Weave. Under the settlement, she and the Snake Dowager remain involved in restoring the damaged Shadow World while Leylin holds its controlling authority. She later joins the high-level forces operating during the renewed war between Magi and gods. At the corpus’s end she stands with Leylin’s A.I. Chip clone, the Dowager, and other beings of laws during the takeover of the Magus World. The text confirms continued activity, but not the recovery of her old Shadow World sovereignty or completion of peak rank 8. (Chapters 1108, 1161, 1179–1181, and 1200)
Appearance and personality
Shar is described as an approachable elven maiden, first associated with black muslin. Her projected beauty is gentle and refined—her voice resembles a clear spring—yet the poise hides extreme calculation and an effortless willingness to kill. She can appear like a reserved young woman in one moment and exert the pressure of an entire world in the next. (Chapters 1067, 1080–1081, and 1090)
She is patient, ambitious, and exceptionally deceptive. Her plans operate across millennia, and she treats empires, bloodlines, rival beings, and even the World Will as pieces to be harvested. (Chapters 1067, 1090–1097, and 1104–1106)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Former divine laws and Magus conversion
Shar’s original domains give her deep command of night, shadows, and magic. Abandoning faith changes her class of existence from deity to Magus: she sacrifices the stable immortality of a god sustained by worship but gains a path that can refine laws and origin force personally. Her former divine techniques remain useful knowledge rather than a continuing supply of faith. The conversion succeeds because the Shadow World supports her weakened arrival; without a new world and origin source, losing worshippers and a divine realm would ordinarily leave a god near death. (Chapters 1067 and 1081)
Shadow Weave
The Shadow Weave is a world-spanning network built from shadow force. It distributes graded supernatural power, authenticates users, monitors access, traps enemies in interlocking strands, and amplifies world origin force. Shar’s refinement makes raw origin more usable, comparable to processing one resource into several specialised products. The network can regenerate while connected to the world and overwhelm an opponent through sustained consumption. (Chapters 1069, 1079–1081, and 1105)
Its efficiency creates strict limits. The system restricts Shar’s own movement compared with a portable origin-force weapon, and her existence becomes tied to it closely enough that destroying or stealing the Weave would cause catastrophic injury. Because Shar constructed it alone, it is less complete than Mystra’s Weave and retains exploitable upper-level backdoors. Karsus’ Avatar can seize control, turning the source of her amplification and surveillance into her largest single vulnerability. (Chapters 1079–1081 and 1107)
Shadow attacks and law suppression
Shar can condense shadows into webs, vortices, and consuming voids. A black-hole-like attack shatters a mountain the size of a small plane and absorbs its dust, while woven strands corrode Trial’s Eye’s judgement runes. She can target souls through weak mental defences, suppress revived conscients, and implant Shadow Weave connections into altered bodies. These effects remain contests of law and energy: peer opponents can resist, native bloodlines have greater tolerance for the world’s origin, and sustained opposition forces the Weave to spend energy regenerating broken strands. (Chapters 1080, 1095, and 1104–1106)
World Will assimilation
Shar’s path in the Shadow World is control. By governing more than half of its intellectual life and magical infrastructure, she gains corresponding influence over the World Will and can call origin force as its representative. Inside the world this raises her close to peak rank 8 and suppresses foreign law-beings, making her temporarily described as invincible in that environment. The amplification is local and costly rather than a permanent personal rank. Forced use drains the world, an avatar carrying most of her power can still be lost, and the remaining unconquered Will actively resists her. (Chapters 1091 and 1095–1098)
Tree of Life and the World Fruit
The Tree of Life is the culmination of Project X, bloodline manipulation, and the empire’s collection of conscients. It reverses the ordinary formation of a World Will, purifying dispersed minds and authority into a tangible World Fruit. Consuming a complete fruit would let Shar absorb the world and reach peak rank 8. Completion requires the portions held by native beings such as the Snake Dowager, and assimilation risks altering Shar with the thoughts of everything she consumes. Linking the tree to the Weave also permits a single takeover to interrupt the entire process. (Chapters 1091 and 1104–1108)
Aura tracing and long-range attack
From a projection or foreign aura, Shar can follow the connection toward a controller’s true body and transmit a law-level attack along it. This makes ordinary clone tactics dangerous against her. The technique needs a usable connection and time to lock on; Leylin’s threat against the Weave forces her to abandon the attempt before it reaches his main body. (Chapters 1080–1081)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate goddess converted to Magus | 1067 | Abandons a failing divine path after losing her worshippers and realm, enters Shadow World weakened, and rebuilds through its origin force. |
| Shadow Weave and majority World Will control | 1068–1091 | Spends millennia embedding her network through the empire until she controls more than half of the world's collective will. |
| Near-peak Rank 8 world-backed avatar | 1095–1098 | Draws attackers into Shadow World and uses accumulated origin force to raise the avatar carrying most of her strength close to peak Rank 8; the boost costs the world heavily. |
| Shadow Weave and World Fruit lost | 1104–1108 | Leylin takes the Weave through Karsus' Avatar and removes the completed World Fruit, preventing permanent fusion with the full World Will. |
Relationships
- Snake Dowager: Shar usurps the Dowager’s home world and spends ten thousand years contesting her authority over it.
- Leylin Farlier: Leylin exposes Shar’s identity, threatens the Shadow Weave, and ultimately ruins her attempt to consume the Shadow World.
- Mother Core: Both are peak-level Magus powers; Shar later operates in the same broad coalition during the Final War.
- Kalle and Kou: Ancient Shadow World beings whose remnants oppose Shar; she destroys Kalle’s revived body and suppresses Kou.
Items
- Shadow Weave: Shar’s world-spanning magical network and chief means of governing the Shadow World. It processes origin force and links users to her control, but the same integration allows a successful system takeover to injure and dispossess her.
- Tree of Life / Tree of Light: A soul-gathering structure that concentrates bloodlines, conscients, and native authority into a World Fruit. It can complete her World Will assimilation only if no native fraction remains outside her control.
- World Fruit: The purified embodiment of the Shadow World’s complete Will. Consuming it would secure peak rank 8, but Leylin takes it before Shar can do so.
