Ernis
Ernis is a Sacred Flame inheritor who turns prophecy into intelligence for Longbottom's revolutionary army. He believes shifts in destiny can raise his power, but his incomplete sight and reliance on a compromised notebook leave him exposed to both stronger Magi and Leylin Farlier's hidden manipulation.
Biography
Prophet of the revolutionary army
Ernis joins Longbottom as a semi-converted rank 1 Magus capable of locating weakened enemies and predicting favorable routes. He identifies the refuge of the temporarily weakened rank 2 Magus Rosby and guides the revolutionary force toward it. When Rosby suppresses his condition and restores true rank 2 strength, Ernis's prediction fails: the fog surrounding a stronger Magus's destiny conceals trump cards beyond what Sacred Flame can safely read. The notebook spirit Merlin explains that prediction can even recoil against an underqualified seer. (Chapters 365–366)
Doubt under Longbottom
Ernis continues supplying targets, weaknesses, defensive information, and escape routes as the revolution attacks the existing Magus order. Longbottom values those results but treats the prophet as expendable, abandoning him to danger when doing so benefits the campaign. Merlin helps Ernis escape, and suspicion begins replacing his earlier confidence in the leader. Ernis nevertheless remains because the revolution and its changes in destiny feed the path he has chosen. He never discovers that the notebook also lets Leylin watch the organization through Merlin. (Chapters 366–372)
Convergence of the Sacred Flame
The genius competition brings Ernis together with Aaron and Vinas, two other Sacred Flame inheritors. Each holds part of the divided Meteor Sword, and their meeting creates the decisive convergence their inheritances have been drawing toward. Ernis uses the sword tip and a Battle Chain in an attempt to bind and overcome the other two, treating victory as a way to gather the full legacy and its destiny. (Chapters 375–376)
Defeat and final warning
Aaron pierces Ernis's chest. As he dies, different tones and personalities move through him, suggesting that Sacred Flame and the forces behind its succession have affected more than his raw power. Ernis transfers the sword component and a calligraphy pen, then warns Aaron that an unseen manipulator stands behind their contest. His Sacred Flame power passes onward to the victor, while Leylin's role remains hidden. The seer recognizes manipulation only when he can no longer escape it. (Chapters 376 and 381)
Appearance and personality
Ernis is a pale, sturdy man with clear features, carefully handmade armor, and a conspicuously tattered notebook. The mismatch between expensive care and the notebook's poor condition draws attention to the object on which he secretly relies.
He is ambitious, opportunistic, and proud of converting destiny into advancement. Failed prophecy and Longbottom's willingness to sacrifice him introduce fear and distrust, but do not break his desire to win the Sacred Flame inheritance. His last warning shows a late recognition that his apparent foresight has operated inside a scheme larger than anything he could predict. (Chapters 365–376)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Rank 1 foundation and Sacred Flame
Ernis is a semi-converted rank 1 Magus who cultivates Sacred Flame. The inheritance responds to important changes and convergences in destiny, allowing him to gain power from events whose consequences extend beyond ordinary encounters. Its prophetic aspect is not omniscience. Rank, obscuring fate, hidden trump cards, and backlash limit what he can see; his failure to predict Rosby's restored strength demonstrates that a rank 1 inheritor cannot reliably penetrate a rank 2 Magus's destiny. (Chapters 365–376)
Prophecy and intelligence analysis
Ernis uses foresight to identify weakened targets, hidden refuges, defensive weak points, and routes for attack or retreat. These predictions make him strategically valuable to Longbottom, especially when combined with ordinary reconnaissance. The information is probabilistic and vulnerable to concealment. Merlin's guidance corrects some failures, but the spirit is not a neutral extension of Ernis: it has its own history and secretly transmits observations to Leylin. (Chapters 365–372)
Battle Chain and formation knowledge
Ernis can analyze defensive formations and fight other inheritors directly. His Battle Chain is capable of binding semi-elemental Magi when it catches them, supporting control rather than simple destructive force. The chain, Meteor Sword tip, armor, and notebook all supplement his own Sacred Flame cultivation; they should not be presented as innate techniques. Aaron's successful counterattack proves that Ernis's preparation and binding tools do not guarantee victory against another inheritor. (Chapters 368 and 375–376)
Relationships
- Longbottom: Revolutionary leader who exploits Ernis's predictions while treating him as expendable.
- Aaron: Rival Sacred Flame inheritor who defeats him, receives his weapon components, and hears his final warning.
- Vinas: Third inheritor in the convergence and Aaron's ally against Ernis.
- Leylin Farlier: Hidden observer and architect who uses Merlin to monitor Ernis without his knowledge.
- Merlin: Notebook spirit who advises and rescues Ernis while secretly serving Leylin's wider plan.
Items
- Tattered notebook: Vessel for Merlin, who supplies advice and escape assistance while also transmitting Ernis's surroundings to Leylin. (Chapters 365–372)
- Meteor Sword tip: One component of the divided legacy weapon, wielded in the inheritors' conflict and passed on at Ernis's death. (Chapters 375–376)
- Battle Chain: Binding equipment used against the other Sacred Flame inheritors. Its restraint can hold semi-elemental Magi but is not an innate Sacred Flame effect. (Chapters 375–376)
- Calligraphy pen: An object Ernis transfers to Aaron during his final moments. (Chapter 376)
