Biography

The acolyte whose memories opened Twilight Zone

Aaron first meets Leylin Farlier as a weak Twilight Zone acolyte whose expedition has encountered a Six-Toothed Giant Boar. He introduces himself in the hope that the unfamiliar expert has saved him, but Leylin instead renders the party unconscious and searches Aaron's mind. Because Aaron has never left Twilight Zone and possesses only an acolyte's limited social standing, his memories cannot reveal the secrets of official Magi; they nevertheless give Leylin his first working map of the underground world's customs, settlements, guilds, and meditation inheritances. Leylin removes Aaron's memories of their encounter and replaces them with the story of a passing high-ranked Magus rescuing the party. The tampering has an unintended cost: Aaron's aptitude falls from grade 3 to grade 2. His mentor strips him of access to the guild's high-grade inheritance, his relatives and friends shun him, his fiancée abandons him, and the war against the dark elves leaves him facing frontline duty as expendable cannon fodder. The apparent kindness of letting him live thus creates the despair that makes him vulnerable to Leylin's next experiment. (Chapters 291, 348–350)

Grandpa Merlin and the Sacred Flame

At his lowest point Aaron finds a black ring, binds it with blood, and hears the voice of an old Magus calling himself Merlin. He initially refuses to sell his soul to an unknown being, showing that he understands the danger of magical bargains, but “Merlin” offers protection, a compatible high-grade meditation technique, and a path back to advancement. The voice is actually a limited artificial intelligence controlled by Leylin, while the ring is both a teaching device and a concealed channel through which Leylin can monitor and manipulate him. The modified Sacred Flame restores Aaron's grade 3 aptitude and replaces the unsuitable Blazing Heart inheritance. His primary affinity is water and fire only secondary, so merely regaining eligibility for Blazing Heart would have left him cultivating an ill-fitting technique. Sacred Flame instead accelerates his recovery and grants prophetic glimpses tied to destiny. Leylin has inserted backdoors that intercept every vision before Aaron receives it, allowing him to suppress or rewrite the prophecy and ensuring that Aaron cannot turn the technique against its creator. Ten years of cultivation carry Aaron from a discarded acolyte to an official Magus. Merlin directs him toward resources, teaches him to conceal Sacred Flame behind the aura of Blazing Heart, and gives him the blueprint for the high-grade Meteor Sword. Aaron accepts dangerous treasure hunts because the ring repeatedly converts risk into advancement, although he remains capable of refusing missions whose danger appears disproportionate. His apparent rise is therefore real in strength but engineered in direction: Leylin needs a controllable prophet whose interference with destiny can be harvested later. (Chapters 353, 359–364)

Convergence, sacrifice, and erasure

Aaron joins Baelin, Vinas, and Memphis during the crisis surrounding Longbottom's revolution. He recognizes changes in destiny around Baelin, helps investigate Longbottom, and urges Baelin to oppose the revolutionary rather than expose him prematurely among civilians. When Aaron, Vinas, and Ernis—three Sacred Flame cultivators created by Leylin—meet in the competition's secret plane, the technique's exclusivity drives them into conflict. Aaron and Vinas defeat Ernis, and the power released by Ernis's death raises Aaron to peak Rank 1. (Chapters 369–377)

On the battlefield, Sacred Flame temporarily pushes Aaron through the Rank 2 bottleneck. He uses the Meteor Sword to tear through protective spells and then gives it to Baelin, judging that the Child of Destiny can draw out more of its power. The breakthrough is not a stable triumph. Leylin activates the ring, reveals himself as Merlin, extracts the Sacred Flame spiritual force, and reduces Aaron from Rank 2 through Rank 1 back to an acolyte before killing him. Aaron, Vinas, and their mentor vessels become materials in the Coin of Destiny rather than beneficiaries of the future they were promised. (Chapters 379–381)

Leylin's later victory buries Aaron's role beneath the legend of Twilight Zone's Guardian. Historical accounts remember Leylin's defeat of the dark elves while the sacrifices of Aaron, Vinas, Baelin, and the former Guardian recede into obscurity. The limits of Aaron's prophecy remain important to Leylin: a prophet can gather useful information from destiny, but cannot safely predict beings far above their own level, and might become dangerous if allowed to grow comparable to the hidden manipulator. Appearance and personality

Aaron begins as a nervous and deferential young man, but he is neither entirely credulous nor passive. He refuses an unexplained soul bargain, questions Merlin when missions become too dangerous, and learns to plan hideouts and escape routes. Loss makes him hungry for recovery, while years of success give him greater composure and the confidence to challenge other Magi.

His attachment to Merlin becomes familial. Aaron treats the voice as the grandfather who restored his future, which makes the final betrayal devastating. He also shows loyalty toward Vinas and Baelin, becoming enraged when Vinas is injured and continuing to support Baelin even when his prophecies show no hopeful outcome. These attachments distinguish him from the impersonal destiny experiment in which Leylin places him.

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Aptitude, affinities, and acolyte foundation

Aaron originally has grade 3 aptitude, later damaged to grade 2 by Leylin's invasive memory work. His primary elemental affinity is water and fire is secondary. This matters because his guild's Blazing Heart requires at least grade 3 aptitude and becomes more effective with stronger aptitude, while its fire orientation is not Aaron's natural best match. Leylin repairs the damage only to grade 3 and uses Blazing Heart as a public cover, not Aaron's true source of advancement. (Chapters 348–353)

He begins as a Level 3 acolyte and, under Sacred Flame, becomes an official Magus. His demonstrated progression reaches peak Rank 1 after absorbing the force released by Ernis's death and briefly reaches Rank 2 during the decisive battle. That last rise depends on converging destiny and is reversed when Leylin withdraws Sacred Flame; Aaron has no independent method to preserve the rank once the altered technique and its accumulated spiritual force are taken away. Sacred Flame and controlled prophecy

Sacred Flame is an exclusive high-grade meditation technique that lets its cultivator touch the currents of destiny. It improves ordinary cultivation and restoration of spiritual force, produces glimpses of possible events, and can accelerate advancement when the user interferes with important turns of fate. It does not provide unrestricted foreknowledge. Early Aaron can predict only at roughly a Level 1 acolyte's ability, cannot perceive high-ranked existences, and sees no reliable way to reverse some outcomes even when he recognizes them. The version Aaron receives is modified rather than authentic. Leylin's backdoors send each premonition through the ring first, allowing him to approve, conceal, or alter what Aaron sees. Sacred Flame is also exclusive within a generation: competing cultivators cannot all progress, producing the violent attraction and conflict among Aaron, Vinas, and Ernis. Interfering with destiny is itself hazardous; Merlin warns that forcing the river too aggressively can grind the practitioner down rather than reward them. (Chapters 352, 359–360, 364–376)

The Merlin ring and Meteor Sword

The black ring binds through Aaron's blood and contains the limited intelligence presented as Grandpa Merlin. It supplies advice, conceals traces, teaches techniques, monitors Aaron's condition, and connects him directly to Leylin. These are item-derived advantages, not Aaron's innate abilities. Its concealment can defeat a family tracking test, but the ring also functions as the control point through which Leylin retrieves Sacred Flame and initiates Aaron's sacrifice. Merlin provides the blueprint for the Meteor Sword, a high-grade Magic Artifact whose materials Aaron gathers at considerable personal risk. The completed weapon channels his spiritual force into exceptionally sharp silver attacks, breaches Longbottom's layered shields, and cuts down battlefield opponents while Aaron is temporarily Rank 2. Its output also responds to destiny: Aaron judges that Baelin can release more power from it and hands the sword over. The sword enhances Aaron's offense, but does not protect him from Leylin's control over his cultivation and soul. (Chapters 353, 359, 375–380)
