Biography
From branded slave to trusted steward
Leylin Farlier finds Damien in a Nightless City slave market after asking for a level 3 acolyte familiar with potioneering and alchemy. A progressively harder technical interview confirms that Damien's craft is strong for his rank, while his neat clothes and formal bearing suggest the steward he can become. A spirit brand makes refusal impossible, but Damien's usefulness soon extends beyond compulsory obedience: he runs Leylin's villa, manages servants and finances, and maintains intelligence channels during the war. When Leylin's position collapses, he orders Damien to preserve the Nightless City property and withdraw before the light Magi can seize him. (Chapters 171–192 and 269–270)
Guardian of the Farlier family
Damien remains with the Farlier line long after Leylin disappears, turning a purchased servant's assignment into a multigenerational duty. Leylin has left the Fallen Star Pendant with him for an outstanding descendant, and Damien passes that protection onward rather than claiming it. When Alric's forces nearly uproot the family, he helps the surviving branch escape and dies as a consequence of the attack. The later generation remembers him as “Grandpa Damien,” evidence that his place in the household came to rest on guardianship and continuity rather than his original legal status. Appearance and personality
Damien is an older man who looks impeccable in a formal butler's uniform. Respectful, disciplined, and highly capable, he suppresses his own fear to obey orders and carries Leylin's trust across generations. (Chapters 171–188 and 269)
Magic, bloodline, and abilities
Acolyte cultivation
Damien is a level 3 acolyte, giving him spiritual force and the ability to work safely around a Magus's laboratory and formations. The corpus does not name a spell model he casts or show him winning a direct magical fight, so his rank should not be expanded into an invented combat repertoire. His value lies in trained magical literacy and reliability rather than battlefield feats. (Chapters 171–172)
Potioneering and alchemy
Damien answers Leylin's questions about ingredient substitution and increasingly difficult reactions with enough accuracy to be judged unusually capable among acolytes of his tier. That knowledge qualifies him to assist with preparations and laboratory work, but it remains below Leylin's own expertise and no signature potion is attributed to Damien. His craft is practical support, not evidence that he is an official-Magus alchemist. (Chapter 171)
Stewardship and external protection
He manages a Magus's residence, servants, accounts, and information flow across long absences, then applies the same discipline to protecting the Farlier descendants. These are learned administrative and logistical skills. The Fallen Star Pendant greatly strengthens the family member who receives it, but Damien is only its custodian; its defence and later upgrades are artifact effects, not his personal magic. His spirit brand likewise enforces loyalty from outside rather than increasing his magical power. (Chapters 172–192 and 269–676)
