Buddha — The World After the Fall

Buddha is the God of Reincarnation, the sixth Divine Throne, and Rift's First Division Commander. Their apparent immortality comes from replacing a destroyed persona with another set of Clothes carrying the same memories, a mechanism that makes each “rebirth” both survival and death. Biography

From Divine Throne to the Only One World campaign

Buddha once trained in the Great Forest under La-Hamad, approaching Ouroboros more closely than almost any outsider but abandoning the final stage of Molting. Instead of obtaining Gestalt's Eye, Buddha developed Reincarnation as a shortcut around death. They also became one of Rift's founders, sharing part of the collective Worldview that perceived Big Brother as a sun, and later combined the authority of the sixth Divine Throne with the office of First Division Commander. Their intervention in Rift's negotiations with the Great Lords shifted the agreement strongly in Rift's favor and helped prepare the conquest that Maiad called Revolution Day. Buddha attacks the Second Site with Rift, defeats Droyan, and then faces Ignis through Karavan. Crimson Flame Tribulation and Black Flame Dragon repeatedly destroy Buddha, but Reincarnation lets them return by sacrificing successive Clothes. The battle forces 1,412 deaths in less than a day—almost as many as the 1,617 reincarnations accumulated across the preceding hundreds of thousands of years—and nearly exhausts Buddha's mental endurance. Buddha nevertheless wins, captures Karavan, and secures the fallen Thrones' World Power for Rift's final plan. (Chapters 221–222, 225–226)

When Jaehwan reaches the Eighth Site, Buddha meets him with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara and the Dharma Wheel, but Jaehwan exposes the hidden cost of Reincarnation: the previous persona truly dies, while a new set of Clothes inherits its memories. Jaehwan then kills Buddha thousands of times in succession. By the 5,487th rebirth, Buddha has only one set of Clothes left and can no longer answer coherently. Jaehwan throws the defeated commander before Maiad van Declan; the corpus does not record another confirmed action or establish whether Buddha survives the collapse of Only One World. Appearance and personality

Buddha is a bald, powerfully built figure who usually appears half-naked or in old rags. The calm confidence associated with a Divine Throne can give way to the appearance of a vicious fiend when they release their full World Power. Their pronouns vary in narration, and this article uses singular they. (Chapters 208, 221, 227)

They are calculating enough to avoid overestimating victories and humble enough to acknowledge the contribution of Rift's ordinary forces. Underneath that discipline lies an extreme fear of death. Buddha's insistence that every replacement self remains “Buddha” sustains their World Power, but Jaehwan's challenge to that continuity provokes rage because it touches a doubt Buddha has carried through every reincarnation. Powers and limitations

Reincarnation: This Unique Setting sacrifices the active set of Clothes when Buddha dies and awakens another set from deep within the consciousness. The replacement inherits memories and appearance, but its personality changes subtly, the sacrificed persona is extinguished, and the supply of Clothes is finite. Repetition also consumes mental endurance and a small amount of World Power. (Chapters 222, 226, 229, 231)
Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara: Buddha's Innate Setting manifests a colossal image with a thousand palms. It can crush an incomplete Black Flame Dragon, regenerate damaged palms, defend against wide-area flame, and produce the Dharma Wheel, a slow omnidirectional attack exceeding ten billion World Power. Comparable divine Settings and Jaehwan's Destruction can break through it. (Chapters 221–222, 229)
Awakening and Ouroboros: Buddha is an Awakened One and one of the few beings able to perceive Big Brother through a shared Rift Worldview. Their Ouroboros remains incomplete. Choosing Reincarnation prevented them from completing La-Hamad's path and obtaining Gestalt's Eye. (Chapters 208, 222, 224, 229)

Relationships

Maiad van Declan: Buddha serves as Maiad's First Division Commander and provides essential military force for Only One World. Maiad ultimately receives Buddha's nearly exhausted body after Jaehwan's victory. (Chapters 208, 226, 231)
Ignis, Droyan, and Karavan: The two Divine Thrones and Ignis's Vicegerent become Buddha's most punishing opponents before Jaehwan. Their attacks kill successive Buddhas 1,412 times, but Buddha outlasts them and captures Karavan. (Chapters 221–222, 226)
Jaehwan: Jaehwan defeats both Buddha's techniques and the identity claim behind Reincarnation. His willingness to continue through thousands of rebirths reduces Buddha's supposed immortality to its finite supply of Clothes. (Chapters 227, 229, 231)
