Karavan
Karavan is the celebrated Vicegerent of Ignis, God of Flames, and a recurring ally of Jaehwan. Initially an observer speaking for a Divine Throne, he rescues Jaehwan from the Grand Auction, rebuilds his severed divine link in the Great Forest, and eventually inherits Ignis's Setting and Site.
Biography
War on the Metaverse Floors to Climbing the Branch
Karavan first appears outside the Metaverse as a famous Vicegerent with flaming hair, following news of the Six Gods War while Ignis speaks inside his mind. He carries the status of the Third Divine Throne's representative and is confident enough to comment on forces far below his god's level, but the Metaverse's collapse produces a System event even he has never seen. When Ignis later descends into Caspion, Karavan serves as the god's concerned intermediary and observes Jaehwan's ability to disrupt the assumptions governing gods and Vicegerents. (Chapters 135–136 and 144)
Ancient Gods and the Grand Auction to Only One World
Karavan attends the Grand Auction as Ignis's Vicegerent, trading commentary with other throne representatives and asking practical questions about Jaehwan's Naked power. When Maiad activates Deus Ex Machina and defeats Jaehwan, Karavan answers Andersen's call, takes the unconscious Jaehwan and Runald, and carries both at full speed back to the Destruction. He then travels with the Allies into the Great Forest. The machine's Plausibility Destruction has severed his link to Ignis, leaving him able to use only the basic Flame Fist and exhausting his own high-grade-god-level reserve against the forest's Lost Ones. (Chapters 184–198)
The Longevity Clan's hot spring turns that weakness into training. Karavan is forced to scrub the clan members' backs with his flames, initially treating the work as humiliating, but gradually develops a “philosophy of scrubbing” and raises the rank of his soul. He joins Runald and La-Hamad on the journey to Purgatory, helps interpret what they learn there, and—with Jaehwan's assistance—nearly restores the link to Ignis. When the group leaves, his returned World Power is comparable to Jaehwan's and his altered soul surprises even Chunghuh. (Chapters 199–209)
Karavan later reunites with Ignis to defend the Third Site against Buddha, filling the sky with crimson flame buds and helping melt Buddha's soul form. Buddha ultimately defeats him and Ignis is lost. Karavan escapes severely injured, becomes a Lost One with much of his soul broken, and absolutely refuses Rift's attempt to recruit him. Jaehwan finds the discarded soul after defeating Buddha and brings it to Chunghuh. Karavan survives, trains for the following year, inherits Ignis's Setting, and becomes the new god of the Third Site, though the text stresses that he has not yet reached Ignis's former strength. (Chapters 221–231 and 236)
Appearance and personality
Karavan is a man with flaming hair and a powerful, conspicuous presence. He lounges casually when first introduced and is later comfortable revealing far too much of himself, whether in the Great Forest's hot springs or on a battlefield. Severe damage after Ignis's death reduces his soul to a wreck, but subsequent recovery restores enough presence for others to recognize him as the Third Site's new god. (Chapters 135, 199, 221–226, and 236)
He is boastful, talkative, curious, and more dependable than his comic complaints suggest. Karavan eagerly explains the Divine Thrones, marvels openly at unfamiliar powers, and grumbles throughout the Great Forest. Yet he carries Jaehwan and Runald out of a hopeless battle, adapts to degrading training instead of abandoning it, and fights desperately to protect his Site after losing the advantage of surprise. His categorical refusal to join Rift after Ignis falls makes that loyalty a choice rather than mere obedience through a divine link. (Chapters 187–209 and 221–231)
Powers and limitations
Divine link and World Power
As Ignis's Vicegerent, Karavan receives World Power and access to Settings through their divine link. At full connection his power is comparable to advanced Awakened Ones and appropriate to the representative of a Divine Throne. Deus Ex Machina's Plausibility Destruction demonstrates the link's central weakness: once severed, Karavan loses Ignis's Representative Setting and must fight from his own finite reserve. The Great Forest training raises his soul's rank and Jaehwan helps restore the connection, but neither process makes him independent of Ignis immediately. (Chapters 184–198 and 208–209)
Flame Fist and Crimson Flame Tribulation
Flame Fist is Ignis's basic Setting, which Karavan can reproduce without direct assistance. Flames around his fists melt the horns of ordinary Lost Ones and later become precise enough to support his hot-spring training. Crimson Flame Tribulation is Ignis's far stronger Representative Setting. Karavan cannot use it while their link is severed; after inheriting Ignis's Setting and becoming a god, he gains the legacy but remains weaker than Ignis at their peak. (Chapters 198–200, 222, and 236)
Longevity Clan training
The Great Forest's hot spring drains Karavan's strength and exposes him to heat beyond what he expects even Crimson Flame Tribulation to withstand. Repeated scrubbing becomes an unorthodox form of training that improves his control and raises his soul's rank. The exact mechanism is not formalized as a named Skill, and the scrubbing mitts are tools rather than artifacts. Its demonstrated consequence is better independent strength and a more stable return of his divine link. (Chapters 199–209)
Succession as a god
After Ignis's death, Karavan initially becomes a Lost One because the sustaining god–Vicegerent relationship is gone. His soul remains unusually promising, and Chunghuh's care plus a year of training allow him to inherit Ignis's Setting and take the Third Site's divine office. This succession is recovery and development, not an immediate restoration of everything Ignis could do. Karavan is regarded as likely to become an excellent god, but his current ceiling remains below Ignis's former peak. (Chapters 225–236)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ignis's Vicegerent | 184–191 | Draws Divine-Throne-level World Power, Flame Fist, and the representative Crimson Flame Tribulation through the divine Link. |
| Divine Link severed | 191–198 | Plausibility Destruction removes Ignis's representative Setting and outside supply, leaving only his finite reserve and retained basic Flame Fist. |
| Crimson Flame Tribulation restored | 221–222 | The intact connection again permits Ignis's representative fire during the war, still at enormous World Power cost. |
| Lost One after Ignis's death | 225–226 | Loss of the sustaining god–Vicegerent relationship destabilizes his soul instead of promoting him automatically. |
| Successor god of the Third Site | By 236 | Chunghuh's care and a year of training let him inherit Ignis's Setting and divine office; his current output remains below Ignis's former peak. |
Relationships
- Ignis: Ignis is Karavan's god, source of his flame Settings, and the voice that accompanies him through most of the story. Karavan protects their Site through Ignis's final battle and later inherits the divine legacy after Ignis dies.
- Jaehwan: Karavan first studies Jaehwan on Ignis's behalf, then rescues him from Maiad and travels beside him. Jaehwan helps restore Karavan's severed link and later saves his broken soul from Buddha's forces.
- Runald: Karavan carries Runald out of the auction catastrophe and trains beside him in the Great Forest. Their comic friction develops into a reliable traveling partnership.
- Chunghuh: Chunghuh recognizes the increase in Karavan's soul after the Great Forest and is entrusted with treating him after the loss of Ignis.
- Buddha: Karavan and Ignis fight Buddha to defend the Third Site. Buddha defeats them, tries to recruit the damaged Karavan into Rift, and discards him after his refusal.
Items
- Back-scrubbing mitts: Ordinary training tools used in the Longevity Clan's hot spring. Karavan channels controlled flame through them, but they possess no stated independent power.
- Flame constructs: Karavan creates crows of fire, flame buds, and hand-to-hand flame effects through Settings inherited from Ignis; these are manifestations of power rather than separate artifacts.
