Zhanrok

Zhanrok is an ancient lizard God whose dead civilization, guarded treasure, and remnant soul persist inside the Time-Stilled World.

Biography

A dead god's defenses outlasting his people

Ancient records describe Zhanrok as the creator and source of sentience for a lizardlike civilization that renewed its bond with him through cities, ceremonies, and bloodline rites. His physical death contributes to the world's social and magical collapse, but does not end his agency: his soul remains anchored beneath Castle Bravo to protect two blocks of Origin Metal. When Leo Skyshard steals the treasure, Zhanrok begins waking and projects crushing pressure through the fortress. Leo escapes before the remnant can fully respond, yet Zhanrok brands both hands with a theft curse that continues drawing divine attention long afterward. Later recollection by Moltherak characterizes Zhanrok as a schemer, but the corpus supplies no new direct act by the remnant after the theft. (Chapters 316–319, 325, 352–357, 404, 727, 1185)

Appearance and personality

Murals portray Zhanrok as a two-legged lizard in stone armor, with orange-dotted eyes and symbols associated with wisdom and honor. Those images are religious or historical representations rather than a direct view of his living body. His treasure defenses and curse show possessiveness and long planning, while Moltherak's warning calls him sly; broader moral claims about his living reign remain filtered through ancient worship and rivalry. (Chapters 316, 319, 325, 352)

Abilities and power progression

Zhanrok's remnant soul senses contact with its Origin Metal and takes roughly thirty to seventy seconds to awaken from deep slumber. As it stirs, its aura produces crushing physical and mental pressure strong enough to shake the fortress and overwhelm Leo. Its theft mark brands the thief, resists concealment within the world, alters the victim's fate-signature, and lets other ancient Gods recognize contact with Zhanrok. These are observed defensive effects, not proof that the remnant retains its former full God-level combat ability. Its limits are severe: the physical body is gone, awakening is delayed, and Leo escapes through a dimensional exit before direct pursuit begins. No progression is shown. (Chapters 325, 353–357, 404, 727)

Relationships

  • Leo Skyshard: Leo steals Zhanrok's Origin Metal and escapes, but carries the god's theft marks afterward. (Chapters 352–357, 404)
  • Moltherak: Moltherak knows Zhanrok as an old, scheming enemy and recognizes his lingering aura on Leo. (Chapters 325, 727, 1185)
  • Soron: Soron reads Zhanrok's mark through fate and treats it as a danger likely to attract ancient Gods. (Chapter 404)

Items

Zhanrok's vault contains two blocks of Origin Metal guarded by his casket, priest, and remnant soul. Leo steals both; one later reaches Mauriss's side while the other remains tied to Leo's divine-weapon plans. (Chapters 352–357, 465)
