Karl

Karl, whose real identity is Karlan Vesteel, is a Cult operative who infiltrates Raiden's expedition under the fabricated identity Karl Maxtern. He hides a Transcendent assassin's strength beneath the mannerisms of a frightened cook and field medic until his sabotage and betrayals expose him.

Biography

The harmless cook and the concealed mission

Ordered to keep a potentially decisive Time-Stilled World discovery out of enemy hands, Karl accepts a forged Master-tier identity and joins Raiden's party as its lowest-paid support member. He reinforces the disguise by carrying supplies, treating Cipher's wounds, cooking for the group, and displaying convincing fear, while secretly judging his companions as tools and steering them toward his own Cult objective. (Chapters 266–267, 278, and 284–290)

Karl's need to preserve his cover turns into deliberate murder once suspicion and resentment threaten him. He sabotages Cipher's treatment, pushes Raiden into the abyss, tries to kill Bob, and falls after Bob destroys their platform. The fall does not immediately kill him, but the world's taint leaves him mutated and unstable; Leo Skyshard, whom Karl had also tried to betray, later exploits that impairment and decapitates him. Appearance and personality

Karl's cover presents a pale, timid young man with trembling hands, soft presence, nervous laughter, and an easily embarrassed manner. Once the act drops, his posture straightens and his speech becomes smooth, confident, and cruel. Later corruption bends his spine, hardens his skin, distorts his movements, and erodes the careful judgment that had supported his deception. (Chapters 266–267, 271, 311, and 332–334)

Abilities and power progression

• Karl is actually a Transcendent despite sustaining a Master-tier cover. His dense mana, speed, strength, and hardened body let him overpower Grandmasters and resist ordinary blades, but the corpus does not name a signature technique for his uncorrupted fighting style. • His most consistently demonstrated skill is operational deception: he controls his posture, voice, apparent fear, and medical behavior closely enough to fool experienced companions. • Cipher, Raiden, and Bob are companions only within Karl's cover. He treats them as replaceable, sabotages Cipher, kills Raiden, and tries to murder Bob in retaliation for earlier Cult deaths. (Chapters 285, 293, and 310–311)
