Cipher
Cipher is Raiden's assassin partner and a researcher of Time-Stilled World anomalies. His planning helps form the expedition, but injury, isolation, and Karl's covert sabotage turn him from a knowledgeable guide into one of the mission's first casualties.
Biography
Research, psychological collapse, and abandonment
Cipher collects old notes, theories, and journals because he believes a survivable strategy for the Time-Stilled World can be developed, and he helps recruit Leo Skyshard to a party that prioritizes withdrawal over treasure when danger becomes excessive. Once inside, he interprets tracks and illusions, fights beside Raiden, and depends on Karl's medical support after a tainted human tears flesh from his neck. (Chapters 260, 266–278)
The forest's pressure steadily erodes Cipher's stability: he becomes irritable, pulls out his eyelashes, trembles, and keeps his hands close to his weapons. During a later battle he suffers a corrosive abdominal wound, after which Karl secretly applies an anticoagulant while pretending to treat him. Cipher voices distrust but loses consciousness from continued bleeding; the group leaves him behind, and later dialogue treats him as lost, without a direct scene confirming death. (Chapters 279–293, 298, and 302)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives no stable facial, hair, or clothing description for Cipher. He is initially quiet, sharp, sympathetic toward weaker Karl, enthusiastic about anomaly research, and cautious about remaining stationary in hostile terrain. Prolonged exposure turns that caution into irritability, compulsive behavior, panic, and suspicion, showing deterioration rather than a settled baseline personality. (Chapters 260, 273, 279–293)
Abilities and power progression
- Cipher is assessed as a Grandmaster and fights with daggers, using trained reactions and flanking movement. A tainted human still gets through his defense and tears his neck, demonstrating that his rank does not protect him from the world's faster mutated threats. (Chapters 267 and 277–278)
- He researches Time-Stilled World records, briefs the party on mission materials, resets protective runes, reads tracks, and recognizes some forest illusions. His knowledge is incomplete: the forest produces phenomena that neither he nor the surviving records can explain. (Chapters 260, 271, 274–280)
- No named personal skill or progression beyond Grandmaster is established. Psychological decline and accumulated wounds reduce his effectiveness, while Karl's false treatment prevents a fair test of whether proper medicine could have saved him. (Chapters 291–293)
Relationships
- Raiden is Cipher's established assassin partner and expedition leader. Their professional trust lasts until Cipher is incapacitated, when Raiden makes the practical decision to leave him behind. (Chapters 260, 266, and 293)
- Karl first appears to be a weak support whom Cipher defends and relies upon for treatment. Cipher's final suspicion is accurate: Karl deliberately worsens his wound. (Chapters 273, 278, and 293)
- Leo Skyshard joins through Cipher and Raiden's recruitment. Leo values Cipher's knowledge initially but later considers him an unstable liability under the forest's pressure. (Chapters 260 and 291–293)
Items
Cipher carries daggers, a research data slate, protective-rune equipment, and expedition records. None is individually named, and his equipment's disposition after the party abandons him is not established. (Chapters 260, 266, 271, 274, and 293)
