Katrina

Katrina is a student of Lucien Evans, an experimental arcanist at the Atom Institution, and a Congress of Magic investigator. Initially one of the most talented and competitive apprentices arriving from across Storm Strait, she grows into a specialist in low-temperature materials whose work with Layria establishes superconductivity, then demonstrates the same patient, evidence-first habits while exposing a demon-worship conspiracy in the Schachran Empire.

Biography

From rival apprentice to Atom Institution researcher

Katrina enters the journey to Allyn at fourteen, already singled out with Sprint for unusually strong spiritual power and arcana talent. Her immediate goal is practical as well as ambitious: she wants to become a sorcerer soon enough to help her parents, who have been in prolonged difficulty. Proud of her own schedule and locked in constant competition with Sprint, she declines Lucien's offer of instruction and doubts that a young sorcerer new to arcana can guide her. The assessment in Allyn overturns that confidence when Lucien's three pupils place above her. Katrina responds by apologizing rather than denying the result; when Lucien is later attacked for his teaching methods, she supports him and decisively joins his tutoring sessions. Under that demanding regimen, she advances to the senior apprentice class and comes to accept that the method she had dismissed produces real progress. (Chapters 170–203 and 243)

Three years later, Katrina graduates from Douglas Magic School with honors and takes a coveted receptionist post in the Sorcerer Administrative Department. She nevertheless leaves that secure position to help establish Lucien's Atom Institution, accepting the pressure of a new research program because she hopes to earn the kind of honor represented by arcanists such as Isabella. Her earlier refusal still weighs on her: when Lucien promises to accept the institution's apprentices formally after they become sorcerers, her excitement is mixed with gratitude and regret over the first impression she gave him. She subsequently becomes one of his acknowledged students, works in the institution, and reaches the second circle with her peers. (Chapters 332–343 and 421–453)

Superconductivity and materials science

Lucien's low-temperature materials program gives Katrina and Layria the field in which they become independent researchers. Rather than abandon an old project when its initial purpose recedes, they return to it after helium makes lower temperatures accessible and test many materials in their spare time. They discover that mercury's electrical resistance abruptly vanishes at 4.2 degrees above absolute zero, repeat the effect with lead and other metals, and bring both the data and a draft paper to Lucien. Their persistence produces a Silver Moon Medal and raises Katrina's arcana standing to level four, but the discovery also exposes the boundary of their knowledge: the cognitive-world model fed back to them is incomplete because they cannot yet explain why the effect occurs or why it requires extreme cold. Lucien therefore directs them to continue the materials search while refining electromagnetic magic rather than treating the first result as a finished theory. (Chapters 511–512, 528, and 532)

Katrina continues along that empirical path as the microscopic theories around her become increasingly difficult and unstable. She and Layria develop enough knowledge of elements and conducting materials to supply the transistor work behind Heidi and Chelly's artificial-intelligence project, while broader materials research helps reduce the requirements of alchemical devices. Yet Katrina remains conscious of the difference between mastery of a specialist field and universal expertise: she admits when Hathaway's atomic work exceeds her understanding, refuses to call herself an authority merely because she has ample experimental resources, and chooses formulas and experiments when competing interpretations of the microscopic world become too uncertain to follow confidently. This combination of ambition and restraint marks her development from a student intent on beating a rival into a researcher willing to let repeatable evidence set the limits of her claims. The Schachran demon-worship investigation

When assigned a mandatory mission to investigate a Congress sorcerer's death in the Schachran Empire, Katrina accepts both institutional duty and a rare chance to revisit her native country. Working undercover among mercenaries, she refuses to close the case merely because the Church has already blamed the dead sorcerer. She activates temporary Snowstorm blood power to move inconspicuously, but supplements it with magic because she trusts it more; at the cleansed crime scene, shallow physical marks lead her to reason that the victims' extraordinary powers had been sealed. Her suspicion of Yakov's reaction then produces a second lead. She uses stealth and mental control to question him without killing him, follows his information to Duke Duda, and shares it with Viscount Carendia after judging that cooperation is safer than continuing alone. (Chapters 698 and 706–710)

That caution does not keep Katrina from acting when Duda captures Yakov's company for a slaughter ritual. She and Carendia scout the manor before entering, identify Duda as the ritual's host, and attack only after establishing the defenders' positions. Katrina breaks the hall open, clears the corrupting mist, disables groups of knights and werewolves, protects the captives, and helps overpower Duda. When Viscount Andree activates a nearly complete ritual and sacrifices a senior-rank dagger, Katrina draws on a prepared connection to Lucien's Atomic Universe to freeze the resulting death storm, saving the prisoners at substantial personal cost. Afterward, she resists the temptation to make the evidence sound more conclusive than it is: her report records events without forcing a culprit theory, allowing the Affair Committee to compare them with intelligence she does not possess. She also helps Anna and Yakov leave safely and recognizes, through the likelihood of losing contact with them, the human value of the communication systems developed in Allyn. Dumute mission and later research

Katrina continues to Dumute to complete a separate request from Lucien. Faced with a closely guarded temple and a formula whose purpose she does not understand, she calculates the required location, suppresses her magic traces, installs the dwarf figurine she was given, and withdraws after seeing it merge with time and space amid divine-like light. The assignment rewards the same restraint that carried her through Schachran: she does not improvise around an unexplained object or expose herself to learn more, but completes the measured operation and leaves before the temple's defenders can identify her. After returning to the Atom Institution, Katrina again broadens her work beyond low-temperature materials. She prepares proposals for cosmic-ray research, follows quantum-field developments, and helps test artificial intelligence, applying her experimental habits to projects whose theory is still changing. The sequence connects her field experience to her scientific career rather than treating Dumute as a permanent change of profession: she remains part of Lucien's research circle and, at the supplied endpoint, responds with her peers to the strange citywide phenomena accompanying his confrontation and advancement. Appearance and personality

Katrina is introduced at fourteen in a white dress, with blond hair and the bearing of a young lady; as an adult she is repeatedly described as beautiful and mature, with long golden-blond hair. In combat she commonly floats above the field, with her hair moving in the wind and translucent magic runes protecting her. Her eye color is not treated as fixed here because the differing colors shown during her Schachran mission occur while she is traveling under a changed appearance and using mental magic. She is ambitious, proud, and competitive, but not too proud to correct herself. Her rivalry with Sprint initially reinforces her confidence, yet she apologizes after the Allyn assessment and later commits herself to the teacher she had rejected. As a researcher, she is patient and meticulous enough for repetitive materials experiments, skeptical of claims that outrun data, and candid about gaps in her knowledge. In the field she is similarly observant and prudent: she scouts before fighting, preserves uncertainty in her official report, and avoids needless cruelty even toward people who have betrayed her companions. Her seriousness is balanced by dry humor, affection for her friends, and open pride in Lucien's achievements. (Chapters 190–203, 512, 584, 646, 710–714, and 719)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Katrina combines a materials arcanist's experimental discipline with the flexible spell selection of a middle-rank sorcerer. Her strongest early subjects are Force, Electromagnetics, and Element, and her later spell use adds concealment, mental magic, cold, wind, and battlefield control. The progression record uses the corpus's confirmed rank checkpoints while leaving the exact individual attainment dates between them unassigned. (Chapters 191, 453, 528, and 712)

Arcana and materials research

Katrina's principal specialty is the behavior and synthesis of materials, particularly under extreme cold. She and Layria run repeated tests rather than relying on prophecy, identify the abrupt disappearance of electrical resistance in mercury and other metals, and use their accumulated knowledge to support smaller transistor-like components and less demanding alchemical products. The work has clear limits: the superconducting state initially requires temperatures near absolute zero, the mechanism remains unexplained, and the corresponding cognitive-world model is incomplete. Katrina therefore treats the phenomenon as a basis for further experiments and possible improvements to electromagnetic spells, not as a fully mastered principle. (Chapters 511–512, 646, 658–659)

Her theoretical competence extends into new alchemy, quantum mechanics, and quantum-field theory, but she repeatedly distinguishes comprehension from proof. Long training under Lucien gives her a strong mathematical foundation and lets her keep pace with senior-rank specialists inside her areas of focus; when the theoretical disputes become irresolvable from available evidence, she falls back on formulas and experiment. This makes her valuable as both a reviewer and an investigator, where she applies the same habit of comparing competing explanations against physical traces. Concealment, investigation, and mental magic

Katrina uses Advanced Stealth to erase her presence and tracks, can vaporize her body to cross physical barriers, and deploys alarm and anti-detection circles before covert work. Advanced Stealth is not absolute: casting another spell briefly reveals her changed appearance, and stronger observers can still pose a threat. She also uses Secret Eye for remote reconnaissance, combining it with Carendia's bats to map sentries, traps, and enemy positions before entering Duda's manor. (Chapters 709 and 711)

Her mental spells provide both intelligence and crowd control. A domination spell compels Yakov to answer questions, though Katrina limits its use to extracting the needed leads. Mind Mist spreads a fog that strips ordinary knights and werewolves of coherent thought while excluding chosen allies; a frost-giant aura can drive the mist back, and Duda disperses it by sacrificing his own arm in an explosion of blood. Katrina can cast Mechanized Mind on herself to suppress emotion during a volatile ritual, but its function is control rather than greater raw power. (Chapters 709 and 711–712)

Combat magic and borrowed amplification

In direct combat, Katrina flies, manipulates wind, freezes groups of enemies, and uses Lucien-derived spells including Lucien's Fireball, Professor's Infrasound Resonance, and Elemental Order. Her defenses include Douglas's Absorbing Wall, Stone Skin, and layered magic runes; together they redirect or absorb Duda's attacks while her illusions and control spells deny him effective targets. The Silver Moon Medal can accelerate consecutive spellcasting, allowing her to follow an infrasound attack with Elemental Order before Duda can recover, but this is an item-assisted effect rather than an innate removal of all casting limits. Against Andree's senior-rank sacrificial dagger, Katrina cannot rely on her normal middle-rank strength. A prepared silver badge lets her call a projection of Lucien's Atomic Universe and amplify Evans's Freezing Ray until it freezes the death storm, the ritual, and Andree himself. The borrowed power is temporary and leaves her visibly pale. Her later modification of collective concealment is more representative of her own development: by applying the Congress's study of light, she creates a fifth-circle spell with a partial group-stealth effect, while acknowledging that it can fool only ordinary knights and does not equal the true seventh-circle spell. Temporary Snowstorm blood power

Before entering the Schachran Empire, Katrina obtains a potion that activates the Snowstorm blood power so she can travel without openly casting magic. It lets her blend with wind and provides a second supernatural method of concealment, but the potion's result is capped below the grand-knight level. Katrina treats it as situational cover rather than a replacement for sorcery, explicitly combining it with Advanced Stealth because she trusts and prefers magic. Her affinity for snow spells also reflects both Lucien's instruction and the stories of the northern sorcerer Fitia that she heard while growing up. (Chapters 708–709 and 714)

• Lucien Evans: Katrina first rejects Lucien as a teacher, then apologizes, seeks his tutoring, and becomes one of his formal students. His experimental discipline shapes her career, while her superconductivity and materials work becomes one of the clearest independent returns on his teaching.
• Layria: Layria is Katrina's principal research partner. Their patient work on low-temperature materials leads to superconductivity and a Silver Moon Medal, and their shared expertise later supports new alchemical technologies.
• Heidi: Heidi is a close friend and housemate as well as a fellow student. Katrina contributes materials knowledge to Heidi's artificial-intelligence work and consistently shares both her anxieties about new theories and her joy in their peers' achievements.
• Sprint: Sprint begins as Katrina's constant academic rival. Competition drives their early ambition, but it matures into collegial trust within Lucien's research circle and shared concern for their quieter friend Annick.
• Annick: Annick is a fellow student and long-term colleague. Katrina initially places ahead of him in raw talent but accepts the lesson when his training produces the stronger assessment result; later they discuss new alchemy as peers and worry about one another's well-being.
• Yakov: Katrina travels with Yakov's mercenary company under cover, secretly interrogates him when his connection to the dead sorcerer becomes suspicious, and then risks herself to rescue him and his companions. After the case, she advises him on escaping retaliation and offers Holm as a possible freer future.
