Heidi

Heidi is one of Lucien Evans's earliest students and later an influential arcanist in computation, artificial intelligence, particle research, and magical communications. She enters the story as an outgoing apprentice who wants the security and status promised by the Congress of Magic, but Lucien's demanding instruction turns her curiosity into disciplined experimental work. Her career joins playful ambition with practical invention: she helps build the first Heidi–Chelly artificial-intelligence prototype, adapts computational principles to spell preparation, discovers a new cosmic-ray particle, and eventually holds both an eight-star arcana badge and a ninth-circle magic badge. Biography

Crossing the strait and choosing Lucien as a teacher

Heidi comes from Syracuse and reaches Sturk after a sorcerer recognizes her potential. She is already using Element Meditation and is proud of becoming an apprentice in training within weeks, but she is candid about not understanding calculus or the arcana books placed before her. When Annick asks the newly arrived Lucien for instruction, Heidi and Layria support him and ask to join as well. Her original goals are concrete—becoming a real sorcerer, earning wealth, and gaining enough status to see family again—but her willingness to admit ignorance gives Lucien a basis on which to teach her. (Chapter 170)

Lucien's exercise-heavy lessons exhaust Heidi, yet she defends their effectiveness when Sprint mocks the group. During the secret voyage to Holm, she has to climb a ladder in violent wind while terrified of the sea below. Lucien deliberately lets her finish under her own power, and her exhaustion becomes pride because the danger proves that she can act despite fear. She also preserves his suitcase during an attack, endures seasickness, and continues studying until she is close to becoming a formal magic apprentice on arrival. The journey converts an abstract wish for a better life into a first experience of the endurance required to reach it. (Chapters 171–183)

At the Allyn magic school, Heidi and her friends discover that Lucien's relaxed classroom manner does not mean an easy course. She warns other students that his tests and insistence on responsibility have another side, supports him when his teaching is challenged, and asks for continued tutoring rather than abandoning his methods. Her humor also begins to show a practical awareness of institutions: when a clerk exceeds his authority, Heidi remarks that following the stated procedure would have avoided the political disaster. By the time Lucien leaves this phase of teaching, she has become a loyal student who associates intellectual rigor with mutual support rather than mere obedience. (Chapters 190–213)

Growing inside the Atom Institution

When Lucien returns to Allyn years later, Heidi and the other apprentices have grown into young researchers. She formally becomes an arcanist, proudly showing him her one-star badge, and joins the Atom Institution's work in elements and the microscopic domain. Lucien continues to push the group toward official sorcery, but Heidi does not simply imitate him: she follows debates, evaluates hypotheses, and shares the institution's experimental labor. Her friendship with the other students makes the group both a research team and a support network in which mockery, pride, and collaboration coexist. (Chapters 332–356, 429, and 512–529)

The widening gap between Lucien's achievements and her own initially intensifies her ambition rather than discouraging her. When he becomes a grand arcanist at twenty-six, Heidi openly celebrates being his student, then states more seriously that complaining about his workload never excuses doing less. She plans to pass his quizzes on to her own future students and helps turn those tests into widely used educational material. That choice marks a transition from pupil to teacher: what once felt like private torment becomes a method she wants to institutionalize because it gave her generation a stronger foundation. Heidi takes a position teaching the basics of the new alchemy at Holt Magic College while continuing independent work in the Atom Institution. Students call her the “Smiling Devil” because she imitates Lucien's rigorous style through her own cheerful personality. The job also forces her to teach a field that changes beneath her: matrix mechanics, wave mechanics, uncertainty, and new editions repeatedly overturn her preferred explanations and textbooks. She can be reluctant and embarrassed, but she incorporates the accepted work rather than protecting her pride. By this stage Lucien gives only broad directions, leaving Heidi responsible for choosing problems and sustaining her own research. (Chapters 602–603 and 634–657)

Investigator and artificial-intelligence pioneer

Heidi and Chelly turn a study of ancillary computation circles into a broader attempt to reproduce calculation through stored procedures, switches, and alchemical circuitry. Lucien supplies the conceptual challenge, but Heidi's group works out the design details, explores binary on-and-off states, and searches for materials that can control electrical circuits. She accepts a path different from Annick and Sprint's focus on fundamental microscopic theory because she wants an achievement that is distinctly hers. After more than a year of work, the team develops transistors and a general design known as the Heidi–Chelly A. I. System, although cost, incomplete theory, and difficult manufacturing still prevent popular use. (Chapters 645–658)

Her mandatory mission with the Rentato police tests whether laboratory skill transfers to an uncontrolled setting. Investigating victims whose organs were removed, Heidi studies bodies in person, modifies a localization spell to trace dead tissue, and notices that an apparently lively slum contains too many working-age men at home. When the inhabitants reveal themselves as transformed monsters, she moves Detective Buck out of a death spell, blocks another attack with a prepared defense, and uses a ritual medium to borrow power from Lucien's Atomic Universe. Her Arcana Light destroys the attackers, and her later examination reconstructs how a frightened sorcerer used a primeval-devil ritual to gain strength. (Chapters 659–661)

The victory also establishes firm limits. Heidi's shortened ritual consumes an extremely expensive badge, and the combined Spell Trigger and demiplane-assisted attack exhausts her spiritual power. She concludes that devices may let a lower-circle sorcerer reproduce parts of senior-rank magic, but they do not supply the sustained capacity of a substantiated cognitive world. More importantly, she does not treat the local success as permission to chase the deeper conspiracy. She reports the evidence and her suspicion to Lucien, then accepts his order to leave the primeval-devil investigation to the Highest Council. Alertness, technical ingenuity, and respect for the boundary of her competence all contribute to the Congress identifying a wider threat. (Chapters 661–662)

The team's first artificial-intelligence prototype is enormous, expensive, and initially slower than existing magical computation. Sprint calls it a toy, and Heidi reacts with competitive determination, but Lucien emphasizes that creating a new direction from nothing matters more than the prototype's immediate efficiency. Heidi can already identify the bottlenecks: computation can be multiplied several times, crystal research could improve it by orders of magnitude, and further miniaturization depends on materials and component production. The prototype therefore changes her status from a researcher with an ambitious plan into the leader of a program whose limitations are understood well enough to be attacked systematically. Independent discoveries and a technological legacy

Heidi's work spreads beyond the original computation project. Electronic tubes, monitors, and control systems developed by her team become foundations for stream screens, and she becomes interested in preserving live visual broadcasts rather than sound alone. She also travels to a cosmic observatory, works with cosmic rays, and discovers a fast particle roughly two hundred times the mass of an electron. Although she receives abundant feedback from the real world, she refuses to assume that the particle is Hathaway's predicted meson without testing whether it participates in the strong interaction. The response shows how Lucien's training has matured: personal desire for a prize does not override experimental classification. (Chapters 727, 746–748, and 769–784)

During the delayed-choice and quantum-eraser crisis, Heidi watches experiments undermine the intuitive account of microscopic reality. She is frightened by the apparent observer effect but joins the other students in seeking explanations and rushes to Lucien rather than rejecting the result. When Viken attempts to become a true god, she can only watch from protected Allyn, worry about her teacher, and help preserve the equations and theoretical system he reveals during the battle. Her role is no longer that of an apprentice waiting for rescue: she is part of the institution responsible for understanding and carrying forward knowledge produced under existential pressure. Twenty years later, Heidi still appears physically young but now wears an eight-star arcana badge, a ninth-circle magic badge, a Holm Crown ring, and an Evans Prize in Arcana ring. Her artificial intelligence has been combined with illusion in virtual magical exercises and has helped make home visual media practical, although accidents provoke debate over health screening, responsibility, and regulation. Heidi publicly argues for controlling dangerous use rather than banning the entire technology. The endpoint shows both achievement and consequence: the playful apprentice has become a leading researcher whose inventions alter ordinary life and create social problems she must help govern. Appearance and personality

As a teenager, Heidi has long linen-colored hair, a slightly chubby or round face, and a few freckles. As an adult she sometimes wears a neat female knight suit modeled on Natasha Violet, whom she admires. Twenty years after the central conflict, she looks almost unchanged: the same round face, freckles, and long linen-colored hair, now accompanied by high-rank badges and several prize rings. Heidi is outgoing, direct, curious, and openly proud of people and achievements she values. She complains about exercises, celebrates prizes without false modesty, notices gossip quickly, and uses jokes to relieve academic or political tension. Underneath the cheerfulness is sustained discipline. She keeps working when theories embarrass her, accepts experimental results that complicate her ambitions, and can become solemn and observant during an investigation. Her competitiveness with friends usually pushes her toward improvement rather than resentment, while her loyalty to Lucien never requires blind agreement. Magic, abilities, and skills

Heidi combines formal sorcery with arcana research, computational design, teaching, astrology, and prepared spell architecture. The progression record preserves the group ranks and the exact eight-star, ninth-circle endpoint confirmed in the corpus while leaving unshown individual attainment dates unassigned. Her most distinctive approach is modular: she analyzes a complex magical or alchemical operation as stored information, input, control, computation, and output, then asks which parts can be simplified, mechanized, or triggered in advance. Computation and artificial intelligence

Heidi's computation work begins with ancillary magic circles that answer stored functions and perform limited calculations. With Chelly, she documents their procedures, then redesigns the problem around electronic circuits and binary switching rather than trying to store every possible result. The resulting system accepts data and instructions through voice and keys, runs calculations through arrays of tubes, magic patterns, and alchemical components, and displays the output on a screen. This architecture is powered electrically, allowing a non-sorcerer to operate it if they understand the interface. (Chapters 645–646 and 695–696)

The first prototype's limits are explicit. It occupies most of a laboratory, costs roughly as much as a fifth-level magic item, contains too many individually made parts, and initially loses to existing ancillary circles in speed. Heidi estimates that optimization can make it about five times faster and that better crystals could improve it far more without increasing its size, but manufacture and material theory remain bottlenecks. These constraints shape later development toward transistors, smaller systems, and applications other than pure calculation. Artificial intelligence later supports stream screens, home visual media, virtual magical exercise, and illusion-linked simulations. Heidi's team supplies tubes and monitors that make persistent image reception cheaper, while later systems can react to users convincingly enough to structure virtual environments. Those applications introduce safety limits: intense illusion can provoke dangerous physiological responses, and the technology still requires medical screening and regulation. Prepared spells, astrology, and Arcana Light

Heidi applies the same modular logic to spellcasting. Her version of Spell Trigger stores portions of a complex operation in advance and activates them under defined conditions, letting her reproduce a quasi-advanced defensive sequence before reaching senior rank. During the Egret investigation, it combines a blink that removes Buck from danger with Douglas's Absorbing Wall against incoming attacks. The simplification is incomplete: it depends on prior preparation, external devices, and limited stored modules rather than granting unrestricted access to senior-rank magic. (Chapters 660–661)

Her Arcana Light uses a prepared ritual medium to communicate with Lucien's Atomic Universe and borrow the fusion-like power simulated there. Projected elemental planets flare like suns and release an intense cleansing light that destroys the transformed cultists. It is not a miniature Eternal Blaze; Heidi and Buck survive nearby because the effect lacks the full spell's explosive energy storm. The badge is ruined, its materials are so expensive that Heidi can afford only one or two, and the combined casting drains nearly all her spiritual power. Its scale is therefore a deliberately purchased emergency state, not her ordinary output. (Chapters 660–661)

Heidi also uses astrology, localization, telepathic communication, body examination, movement magic, and protective enhancement. She can modify a living-target localization spell to follow the kinship between removed organs and a corpse, then use a crystal ball to find the direction in which suspects traveled. Weather can erase physical and magical traces, deliberate magic can sever the tracking connection, and her astrology yields only a broad direction rather than an exact answer. She compensates by combining magic with observation and police knowledge instead of treating divination as infallible. (Chapters 659–661)

Particle research, teaching, and experimental judgment

Heidi can follow advanced work in the microscopic domain even when it is not her principal specialty. At the cosmic observatory she studies cosmic rays and identifies a new particle, later called a muon, with a measured mass and charge behavior distinct from previously known particles. She insists on further interaction tests before assigning it to a predicted category and accepts that experiment may complicate a preferred principle of simplicity. The discovery contributes to a broader wave of particle research and earns substantial feedback, while the corpus later shows a Holm Crown ring among her awards. (Chapters 769, 783–784, and 839)

As a teacher, Heidi transmits the new alchemy, Lucien's exercise system, and a habit of testing theory through calculation and experiment. Her cheerful severity earns the “Smiling Devil” nickname. She can be attached to one explanation and dismayed when the curriculum changes, but she revises her teaching to incorporate matrix mechanics, wave mechanics, and uncertainty rather than concealing them.
