Biography

Choosing Lucien as a teacher

Layria comes from a common family in Gusta and reaches the Congress through a referrer rather than inherited position. She practices Magnetic Resonance Meditation and wants a foundation broad enough to support any eventual specialization, but the books placed before her expose how much mathematics she lacks. She can recognize that force-field laws describe ordinary spellcasting and is curious about calculus, yet she cannot follow the derivations or even remember the full reading list. Her fear is practical as well as academic: without a teacher, she imagines spending fifteen years before reaching middle rank, while advancement offers both a vocation and the chance to see her family again. When Annick asks Lucien for instruction, Layria and Heidi support him and volunteer as well. Layria is candid about what she does not understand and initially reacts with alarm to Lucien's emphasis on exercises, but she accepts the workload because it gives her a route through the material. Layria completes the senior school courses and the basic arcana examination within three years, then works in the Congress's Conversion Department. She soon accumulates enough credits to be recognized as a formal arcanist and joins Lucien's Atom Institution, where the students move from classroom exercises to active work at the edge of elemental research. Her first sustained specialty is the behavior of materials at very low temperatures. Layria is introduced as a teenage girl with a lively ponytail, a crisp voice, and large, sincere eyes; her eyes are later specified as black. She is earnest, sociable, and willing to expose uncertainty. As an apprentice she admits when she cannot follow calculus, asks whether foundational books will be difficult, and complains gently about Lucien's workload while continuing to complete it. That candor survives her success: after discovering superconductivity, she says plainly that she has no experience improving spells, and when Lucien praises her as an authority she answers that more work remains. Her humility does not prevent enthusiasm. She celebrates research breakthroughs, listens eagerly to accounts of space, and grows animated by the prospect of seeing the cosmos herself.
