Commander Dax is the field commander and liaison of the Natural Sons Regiment during its campaign in Dagos. He converts the Royal party's shifting objectives into reconnaissance, ambushes, supply decisions, and urban deployments, then later receives a barony and a politically advantageous marriage prospect in Wistover.

Biography

Burton, Dagos, and the Royal Marriage

Dax serves as the Regiment's liaison to Dominic Wavemates and the Cygnian Royals while senior oversight remains with others. Once their convoy enters hostile territory with unreliable radio contact, he keeps the group informed and translates reconnaissance into action. He orders bombardment at measured range, monitors pursuing scouts, calls for close weapons when withdrawal becomes necessary, and gathers local intelligence about enemy movements. His role is not to choose the war's political objective; it is to keep soldiers alive and productive while Royal plans change around them. (Chapters 133 and 166–171)

The campaign increasingly demands independent judgment. Dax checks whether civilians need help, sends teams across both sides of a valley, personally leads the northern assault, and establishes an ambush after clearing the position. He also watches scarce ammunition and storage, promising Dominic that newly supplied rounds will count. These decisions let the Natural Sons operate as a mobile force that can raid, rescue, loot necessary supplies, and disengage before heavier opposition arrives. (Chapters 175–180)

In the Dagos capital, political uncertainty becomes a tactical problem. Dax recognizes that officers hesitate because they do not know which claimant others support, prepares extra mortar ammunition when the Royals propose a dangerous operation, and achieves a confirmed rifle kill from more than a kilometre away after several attempts. When Prince Alex orders the Natural Sons dispersed through the Palace to reinforce foreign nobles and respond to an internal attack, Dax asks what comes after the coronation, then accepts the deployment and leaves the Royals to handle diplomacy. After the war, Dax's status changes from untitled commander to Baron. During Wistover's marriage competition, several women pursue him without realizing that he understands their manoeuvring. He develops a particular preference for Princess Min of Amerton, a Royal from a tertiary branch, and preparations proceed with most likely guests already nearby. (Chapters 492–504)

By the allocation of new estates, other nobles describe Dax as extraordinarily lucky: he receives first choice of land and is set to marry a Princess. The outcome rewards his service with both territory and a powerful family connection, but the corpus does not detail his administration after the grant or the final wedding ceremony. Appearance and personality
