Richard

Richard is an early Tutorial faction leader who absorbs Jacob’s group under coercive pressure and becomes one of Jake’s first human antagonists. A competent organizer before and after initiation, he prioritizes control and faction survival until William turns their alliance against him.

Biography

Coercion, consolidation, and death

Richard approached Jacob’s smaller group with superior numbers and described assimilation as cooperation, singling out Caroline because his faction needed a healer. When Jake refused to join and openly challenged him, Richard ordered Nicholas and an assassination squad to remove the threat. Their deaths hardened the conflict, while Richard retained Jacob and the others and built one of the Tutorial’s dominant camps. (Chapters 11–14)

William exploited Richard’s existing fear of Jake and helped frame the archer for the wider conflict. Richard then negotiated a truce with Hayden, presented Jake as their common enemy, and helped ambush him when Caroline lured Jacob to a meeting. The conspiracy ultimately benefited William rather than Richard: William attacked Richard’s elites, killed Caroline first, and then slew Richard, receiving a Tutorial leader-kill notification for the act. Appearance and personality

Richard is a very large, heavily built man who wears full plate armor and carries a tower shield and sword. His initial friendliness masks cold calculation; he is competent, thorough, and concerned with maintaining authority, but reacts poorly to defiance and is susceptible to information that reinforces his existing suspicions. Path, class, and abilities

Richard’s final kill notification identifies Stalwart Bulwark and Tyrranical Conniver as his class and profession. His equipment and demonstrated tactics emphasize defense, area denial, and organized group pressure: he uses his tower shield and a phantom shield projection to close escape routes while allied casters bind a target. These tactics depend on coordination and reliable intelligence, both of which William successfully corrupted. (Chapters 52, 84)

His pre-system experience running a private security firm supports his command skills and explains why former employees accepted him as “boss.” That competence built a large faction, but it did not protect him against deception from inside his alliance or William’s metal magic. (Chapters 13, 49, 61)
