Caroline

Caroline is Jake’s former coworker and the only healer in his original Tutorial group. Her value draws Richard’s faction to absorb the group, and her later decision to help ambush Jake becomes one of the central fractures among the surviving coworkers.

Biography

Healer, betrayal, and death

Caroline entered the Tutorial in a white healer’s robe and rapidly became indispensable, healing injuries between battles and assisting Jacob even during combat despite the touch range of her spell. Richard explicitly targeted her when pressuring the smaller group to join him, and concern for retaining a healer helped protect her position after assimilation. (Chapters 3–12)

Later, Caroline helped Richard lure Jacob and Bertram to Jake’s meeting while concealing the waiting ambush. Jake’s familiar behavior made her reconsider the accusations against him, but she still raised the barrier that closed his escape route and enabled Hayden’s near-fatal strike. Her relationship with Jacob deteriorated afterward. William eventually attacked Richard’s elites and killed Caroline first by turning her body to metal, exploiting a healer’s low physical durability. Appearance and personality

Before the system, Caroline is described as a slim blonde a year younger than Jake. She begins as attentive and compassionate, tending even catastrophic injuries, but becomes stern and secretive under Tutorial pressure. Her exact motive for continuing the ambush after doubting William’s story is not disclosed, so her change should not be reduced to a single established cause. (Chapters 1, 5, 52)

Path, class, and abilities

Caroline’s healing is touch-based and closes cuts, bruises, and other wounds while apparently reducing infection risk. This range makes her less active at the front of a fight, although she can move in to heal allies mid-combat. Her low Vitality and Toughness leave her vulnerable when directly targeted. (Chapters 4, 5, 11, 61)

She also creates transparent walls and barriers of light. During the ambush on Jake, she places one precisely across his movement path and combines it with Richard’s shield projection and other barriers to deny every escape direction. The barrier breaks when Hayden’s spear drives Jake through it, establishing that it can be overcome by sufficient force. (Chapter 52)

Relationships

• Jacob: Caroline is attracted to Jacob and later works closely beside him, but her role in the ambush damages their relationship before her death. (Chapters 1, 4, 52, 69)
• Jake Thayne: Jake begins with a workplace crush on her; her betrayal leaves him wanting an explanation he never receives. (Chapters 1, 52, 93)
• Richard: Richard values her as a scarce healer and secures her cooperation in the attempt to capture Jake. (Chapters 11, 12, 52)
• William: William deceives Caroline about Jake and later kills her at the start of his assault on Richard’s faction. (Chapters 40, 52, 61)
