The Battlemaster is the Colosseum official who registers Jake, schedules his ascent, and ultimately reveals himself as the retired Champion called the Warmaster.

Biography

The Floor Climb and Challenge Dungeons

The Battlemaster initially treats Jake as another overconfident New Blood, inspecting him, assigning matches, and refusing requests to bypass the arena’s ranking rules. As Jake keeps winning, skepticism turns into practical advice, concern, wagers, and genuine respect. At the final Champion gate, the official reveals that he once fought as the Warmaster and returns to the arena to test Jake personally. Jake turns the Warmaster’s own wire trap against him, and the Battlemaster surrenders when he recognizes he cannot answer the prepared finishing arrow. He then resumes his post, guides Jake toward Valdemar, and celebrates when Jake becomes sole Grand Champion before the challenger exits the dungeon. (Chapters 739–779, 783)

The Battlemaster is a middle-aged man who ordinarily wears practical, simple clothes and stays at his assigned post. As the Warmaster, he changes into full plate and carries a constantly shifting arsenal. His dry sarcasm and self-serving jokes about betting gradually reveal an attentive mentor who values honorable combat, gives useful warnings, and knows when pride should yield to survival. As a Weapon’s Master Blacksmith, the Warmaster believes a smith should understand every weapon he creates. He demonstrates expert use of swords, shields, spears, axes, segmented blades, machetes, crossbows, and wire. Many weapons carry a single prepared effect—fire, frost, lightning, magnetism, explosive fragmentation, or ranged transformation—allowing him to change tactics faster than an opponent can settle into a counter. His armor disrupts Jake’s embedded arrows, his boots provide a high-speed straight charge, and nearly invisible wire reshapes the arena into a trap.
