Theone Itimo

Theone Itimo is an Elf merchant-captain whose command of ships, logistics, and early firearms makes her one of Vasen Lak Orazen's most durable expedition partners. (Chapters 85–105, 149–174)

Biography

The Humiliation of Pirates

Theone meets Vasen as captain of The Humiliation of Pirates and immediately insists that even a prince must obey her aboard her ship. She joins the expedition for profit and trusted Black Scale trade, but the voyage makes her responsibilities broader than commerce: she preserves the crucial niter cargo during a pirate pursuit, rapidly lightens and arms the ship, then learns to coordinate newly introduced cannons against larger fleets. Vasen's willingness to take strategic command tests her authority, yet she distinguishes reckless interference from useful leadership and keeps the ship functioning through ramming, boarding, and magical threats. (Chapters 85–105)

Fleet owner and southern expedition

Payment for wartime supply work makes Theone the owner of a small fleet and brings her into the Fifth Waterwheel, but she accepts renewed command when the Pantheon expedition needs ships for the southern continent. A cyclone wrecks her vessel, Rakshasas capture her exhausted crew, and Vasen's rescue gives her an immediate choice about whether the local Pangolins' oppression is her concern. She arms herself, organizes disciplined matchlock volleys, and fights because the captors have dragged and abused exhausted people, not merely because doing so will restore her route. Her leadership helps free settlements and turn a stranded trading expedition into an armed bridgehead. (Chapters 118, 149–157)

Theone remains with the expanding expedition as it faces Manticores, the Moving Castle, Ashurada, and unfamiliar technology. She supplies Vasen with maritime communication estimates, identifies when retreat is safer than continued fire, and links access to warm-region rubber with the sea routes needed for Helix Wing development. With Vasen and Mazdari, she later finds Yobuen and helps defeat the Dragon Atneil without divine intervention. Her commercial legacy also survives these campaigns: Itimo Trading grows until its Pollivia branch is the city's second-largest trading post, while Vasen continues to regard her as one of the advisers against whom he tests strategic judgment. (Chapters 158–174, 218, 307)

Appearance and personality

Theone is a red-haired Elf with pointy ears and arms and legs described as long even for her species. Her ears visibly twitch with surprise or irritation, and her build makes her difficult to confuse with the shorter species that Lizardmen sometimes group together. (Chapter 85)

She is commercially exacting, blunt about danger, and protective of a captain's authority. Although new weapons and Vasen's high-risk tactics make her openly skeptical, she adapts once their value is demonstrated and does not hold wounded pride above the mission. Her sharp distinctions between species can make her wary of strangers such as Ravina, but her conduct toward her Ogre first officer and the oppressed Pangolins shows that she evaluates people most decisively through work, trust, and how they treat the vulnerable. (Chapters 85–100, 105, 149–157)

Powers and abilities

Theone possesses no demonstrated divine or magical power. Her story-relevant abilities are professional: seamanship, commercial logistics, firearms command, and expedition leadership.

Seamanship and logistics

As captain, Theone reads ship types, routes, cargo loads, weather risks, and the recurring costs of water, food, wages, and unused hold space. During pursuit she discards only supplies that can be sacrificed while retaining mission-critical niter, and during the southern expedition she estimates how communication ships and follow-up fleets can locate survivors. These skills are limited by physical conditions—her ship can still be overtaken, wrecked by a cyclone, or left unable to navigate without repairs—but they repeatedly keep expeditions viable after plans collapse. (Chapters 86, 90, 149–153)

Gunnery and field command

Theone learns cannon warfare during the southern-archipelago campaign, recognizing both its efficiency and its difficulty of aim. She coordinates flags, ship movement, and reload timing under Vasen's broader tactical plan. On land, she transfers that experience to matchlocks: after escaping captivity she rapidly arms her crew, orders controlled volleys against superior numbers, brings weapons through Siol's gates, and later commands retreat when Ashurada's barrier makes continued firing wasteful. Her skill depends on trained crews, ammunition, and a defensible firing cycle; she is not shown overcoming supernatural enemies through personal force alone. (Chapters 99–105, 151, 157, 171)

Trade and organizational growth

Theone treats every voyage as both transport and commerce, buying where goods are cheap, selling where scarcity raises value, and using the margin to support crews and military escorts. Wartime supply contracts turn one captaincy into a fleet, membership in a private merchant network, and eventually Itimo Trading. Her later scale is demonstrated through the importance of the Pollivia branch, but the corpus does not provide a complete corporate structure or state that she personally manages every branch. (Chapters 86, 118, 149, 218)

Relationships

  • Vasen Lak Orazen: Theone begins by placing Vasen under shipboard authority and becomes his trusted captain, logistics partner, battlefield officer, and strategic sounding board across multiple expeditions.
  • Mazdari: Mazdari's magic repeatedly intersects with Theone's crews and expeditions. They later travel with Vasen to Yobuen and take part in defeating Atneil without direct divine aid.
  • Ravina: Theone initially distrusts Ravina as a nonbeliever and unfamiliar operative, but serves beside her during the southern naval campaign where Ravina's knowledge helps Black Scale deploy gunpowder weapons.
  • Margo: Theone joins Margo's Pangolins after her rescue, helping turn their liberation into an organized military effort and a sustainable foothold.
  • Hillove: Hillove helps the stranded expedition survive and fight on the southern continent; Theone coordinates her crew around the guardian rather than treating it as ordinary equipment.
  • Hwae-Sa: Her Ogre first officer is a long-serving member of her crew whose safety and labor remain part of Theone's command responsibility.

Items

No notable personal item from the planned item manifest is established for Theone. Her ships, weapons, and expedition machinery are operated as commercial or military assets rather than identified as her personal artifacts.
