Rumf
Biography
From enslavement to public authority
Rumf is a Dwarf and former slave whose technical ability leads Kyle to consider him for the new office of technology minister despite resistance rooted in status and species prejudice. When official astronomical and calendar calculations contain an error, Rumf identifies the mistake and defends his conclusion before the court. The successful correction demonstrates that the appointment rests on testable expertise, allowing Kyle to elevate someone whom the established hierarchy would otherwise dismiss. (Chapters 83–85)
As minister, Rumf turns experimental knowledge into military capacity. He develops gunpowder work derived from Ravina’s research, trains and directs cannoneers, and repeatedly tests attempts to reproduce the principles behind the Helix Wing. Those reverse-engineering efforts fail more than once, and Rumf is visibly nervous when presenting dangerous prototypes, but the sustained process gives Black Scale a practical direction for artillery and advanced engineering rather than an effortless technological breakthrough. Appearance and personality
Rumf has the compact, sturdy build associated with a Dwarf, with a prominent beard and a mixture of muscle and body fat rather than a slender frame. His smooth skin contrasts with the abundant facial hair noted around his introduction. He is technically confident enough to challenge an accepted calculation, yet appropriately anxious around unproven machinery; that combination makes him rigorous rather than reckless.
Powers and abilities
- Engineering analysis: Rumf can detect mathematical and astronomical errors and translate abstract findings into institutional recommendations.
- Weapons development: He contributes to gunpowder prototypes, artillery organization, and the training or direction of cannoneers. This work depends on materials, trials, and collaborators rather than supernatural creation.
- Reverse engineering: Rumf studies the Helix Wing in an effort to reproduce its principles. Multiple failures establish that he can investigate advanced designs without immediately mastering them.
