Helix Wing

The Helix Wing is a compact rotary aircraft developed by the Fabirang Union from wound rubber power and later captured, improved, and adapted by Black Scale.

History

Fabirang’s rubber-powered aircraft

Toolbo’s Helix Wings become the Fabirang Union’s principal aerial units on the fourth continent. Rakshasa laborers wind their rubber engines, after which two Platy pilots can scout, drop rocks, and support saw-blade tanks. Their first attack on the Pangolins fails against shields and gunfire, allowing Vasen to capture pilots, engines, and intact examples for Black Scale to study. (Chapters 159–160)

Capture and assault use

Black Scale cannot initially reproduce the unfamiliar mechanism, so Vasen ambushes Fabirang’s larger deployment and retrieves more machines. Improved materials correct some flaws, and roughly sixty Helix Wings carry the expedition over the Moving Castle’s walls. Mazdari’s attempt to combine one with demanding magic shows the airframe’s limits: the spell consumes many potions, but the aircraft itself cannot endure the strain. (Chapters 162–168)

Later adaptations and legacy

Helix Wings remain useful for transport, infiltration, and aerial fighting, although Wyverns outperform them in speed and freedom of movement. Later engineers build single-seat variants and scale their propulsion principle into house-sized units that move and brake a Sky Castle. An early reproduction is eventually displayed in Fabirang’s Central Museum as one of Apostle Toolbo’s inventions. (Chapters 172–183) (Chapters 219–241) (Chapter 292)

Abilities and properties

• A wooden body holds a wound-rubber engine connected to a broad helix-shaped lifting rotor. A tail and controllable secondary wings provide stability and steering, while a friction controller gradually stops the engine for landing. (Chapter 164)
• A standard craft carries at most two Platys or Pangolins plus a small rock payload; only one medium-sized Lizardman or Human-like passenger fits. Its limited lift constrains weapons, armor, rescue capacity, and magical reinforcement. (Chapters 159–167)
• Winding enough rubber for about three hours of flight requires roughly a day and a half of labor by several workers. Damaged axles can waste the entire charge, and violently unwinding cords can kill or injure nearby personnel. (Chapter 159)
• The class crosses terrain and provides valuable reconnaissance, but early machines break frequently, are vulnerable to gunfire, and cannot match Wyverns in speed or maneuverability. (Chapters 160–183)
• The underlying propulsion principle can be enlarged into reversible thrust units for a Sky Castle, but such giant Helix Wings require distributed control stations and several units working together to overcome the castle’s inertia. (Chapters 237–241)
