Deyanin is Black Scale’s white-scaled Hunting Minister, a self-made official who risks the court’s hostility to promote Kyle over an unprepared heir.

Biography

Making room for a different king

Deyanin is born in an unnamed village without aristocratic lineage and reaches even the low-ranking office of Hunting Minister through personal effort despite prejudice against his white scales. Convinced that Vasen’s neglect of government makes hereditary succession dangerous, he privately pressures Hwee-Mun to prepare the king before he publicly supports Kyle Lak Orazen. The effort could have ended with Deyanin secretly buried, but it starts the political movement that lets the more capable third prince be considered without immediately plunging the palace into chaos. When Manun escapes, Deyanin accepts the unpleasant responsibility of bringing the beloved monster back alive. Kyle turns that crisis into an agreement with Vasen Lak Orazen, and Deyanin recognizes that the proposal serves both public safety and the succession effort. Once Kyle becomes king, Deyanin acts as his dependable agent in expeditions, negotiations, and sensitive work. His eagerness to remove every potentially dangerous minister is real, but Kyle restrains that instinct and redirects him toward cooperation rather than endless purges. (Chapters 79–89 and 125–160)

Appearance and personality

Deyanin is a young Lizardman with white scales and red eyes, features some at court associate with an ancient curse. He is stubborn, blunt, politically daring, and disdainful of inherited privilege. Those traits make him an effective reformer and covert operator, but also leave him too ready to see potential rivals as future enemies who should be removed before they act. (Chapters 77–89)

Powers and abilities

Deyanin has no demonstrated magic or divine power. His abilities are political organization, hunting administration, riding a Cockatoo, gathering information, and carrying out discreet royal assignments. Knowledge of mountain routes, supplies, and animal behavior helps with Manun’s recovery, while his low birth lets him challenge aristocratic assumptions. None of these skills guarantees control: bringing Manun back still requires guards, bait, Kyle’s plan, and Vasen’s cooperation. (Chapters 77–89 and 125–160)
