Zhang Yun

Zhang Yun is a Golden Feather cultivator who establishes Chengyun Gate under the identity of Daoist Master Chang Yun. His friendly dealings with the Li Family conceal a long effort to position useful people and inheritances for his sect’s plans.

Biography

A concealed identity and calculated alliances

Xu Yangping introduces Zhang Yun as a third-layer Qi cultivator versed in formations, recruiting him to explore a submerged cave with Tongya and Lin Jingyi. Once the treasures are exposed, Zhang admits that his master sent him to seek the dwelling. He then kills Xu and Lin, dismissing them as worthless rogue cultivators. Tongya’s sword strike checks his attempt to dominate the division of spoils: Zhang claims what he calls the snake demon’s inner core and the Blood Dharma Manual, while Tongya obtains the River Mountain Sutra and Duruo Spear. Decades later Zhang visits Qinghong, laments losing the opportunity to duel Tongya after his death, and investigates the family’s possession of the sutra and Wanglin Blossom. Much later, Li Xuanxuan recognizes the pearl as Miao Dushan’s Heavenly Crimson Pearl, a Purple Mansion spirit artifact, and suspects the manual was Miao’s personal copy. (Chapters 109–110, 508 and 780)

After achieving Purple Mansion, he infiltrates the Eastern Sea’s devil cultivators as Chang Yun and founds a sect on the mainland. In Anhuai Heaven, his conversation with Qiushui reveals that giving Tongya the River Mountain Sutra had been a calculated placement rather than simple friendship. Tongya’s promise had offered a way to unlock the inheritance, while Zhong Qian was preserved as another useful figure for both the grotto expedition and the new sect. Zhang’s courteous public manner serves a strategy that operates across the divide between immortal and devil cultivators. (Chapters 827–828 and 844–845)

As Chengyun Gate’s Daoist Master, he receives Ximing alongside Minghui and explains how the Mifan sects have been cultivated as bait for scattered Dao lineages. The remaining Xiaoshi Spirit Storage cannot be fully opened without appropriate Purple Mansion divine abilities, so possession of weaker inheritors remains useful to the greater factions. He offers future cooperation through Zhong Qian while leaving Ximing to recognize the costs and uncertainty of this arrangement. The Golden Feather Sect later continues to advertise Zhang and Tongya’s friendship, though both sides understand that the relationship was shaped by schemes. (Chapters 1112–1113 and 1562)

Appearance and personality

Zhang has an ordinary face and a sharp, fierce gaze beneath his later disguise. He is playful and sociable when approaching the Li Family, but his courtesy readily gives way to ruthless violence or calculated bargaining. (Chapters 110, 508 and 844)

Abilities and cultivation

He is introduced at the third heavenly layer of Qi Cultivation, with a high-grade method and pure spiritual qi that give him an overwhelming advantage over poorly supported rogue cultivators. His formation work uses jade wedges and linked glowing chains to expose weaknesses, while his saber and shield support combat and exploration. He later becomes a formidable Foundation cultivator and completes his Purple Mansion breakthrough after twenty years of seclusion. His political skill extends to gathering surrendered devil cultivators and establishing Chengyun Gate, but he remains dependent on suitable Dao lineages to open the highest part of the Xiaoshi inheritance. (Chapters 109–110, 508, 844, 1113 and 1248)
