Zhang Duanyan

Zhang Duanyan is a Golden Feather Sect cultivator trusted to represent Daoist Master Qiushui. She serves as an envoy between sects, carrying both ceremonial gifts and a decree whose proclamation unsettles the Li Family.

Biography

An emissary in Zhang Yun’s place

Duanyan first uses her Golden Aperture Heart to sense the danger surrounding Li Xuanfeng, then politely escorts him to the Golden Feather Sect. She identifies Zhang Yun as her grandfather and shares his admiration for Li Tongya; when he enters seclusion, the sect sends her in his place. Years later, she accompanies Tianque to present the Six-Cornered Scarlet Flame Lamp to Li Ximing on the sect’s behalf, showing how her formal courtesy supports Golden Feather’s diplomacy. (Chapters 757–758, 784 and 1038)

The Northern Immortal Decree

As one of Qiushui’s most trusted envoys, Duanyan travels south after Golden Feather accepts an order from northern visitors. She performs its proclamation in an open courtyard, where those present must bow as she recites the immortal carriage’s route and the requirement that local families yield and avoid karmic entanglements. The ritual leaves her pale and short of breath, but she continues the negotiations: she urges the Li Family to settle its conflicts and transfer territories before the carriage arrives, and privately warns them not to seek contact with its procession. She then leaves the island after discussing the sects’ obligations and the fate of the River Mountain Sutra. (Chapters 1270–1272)

An audience with the King of Wei

By the time Duanyan accompanies Tianhuo before the King of Wei, she has reached the Purple Mansion Realm. She offers an account of Qing Jifang’s origins, saying that he was born from a spirit item and inherited some of the Radiance Profound Essence; Tianhuo corrects her, explaining that Qing Tangyin deliberately combined that essence with Veiled Yin in an attempt to balance the child’s inheritance. Duanyan remains courteous as the exchange turns into a broader discussion of the risks of that experiment. (Chapter 1695)

Appearance and personality

Duanyan wears Golden Feather Sect’s golden robes and sometimes a veil; when it falls, she is described with bright eyes, white teeth, and graceful features. She is consistently polite and composed, but the decree’s solemnity visibly overwhelms her and leaves her physically tired. (Chapters 758 and 1271)

Abilities and cultivation

Her Immortal Foundation technique, Golden Aperture Heart, makes her exceptionally perceptive, allowing her to sense danger in a cultivator’s presence. She is a Foundation Establishment cultivator when she proclaims the decree and has advanced to the Purple Mansion Realm by the audience with the King of Wei. The decree’s authority comes from the northern order she carries, not from one of her personal techniques. (Chapters 757, 1271 and 1695)

Relationships

  • Zhang Yun: Her grandfather, whose regard for Li Tongya she repeats to Li Xuanfeng. (Chapter 758)
  • Qiushui: A senior of the Golden Feather Sect who trusts her with diplomatic missions and the northern decree. (Chapters 784 and 1270–1271)
  • Tianque: Her sect companion when presenting a ceremonial gift to Li Ximing. (Chapter 1038)
  • The Li Family: Duanyan carries Golden Feather’s decree to the family and gives Li Jiangqian advice about avoiding conflict with the procession. (Chapters 1270–1272)
  • Tianhuo: She accompanies him before the King of Wei and offers an interpretation of Qing Jifang’s origins that he refines. (Chapter 1695)

Items

As an envoy, Duanyan presents the Six-Cornered Scarlet Flame Lamp on behalf of Golden Feather Sect and later carries an unopened immortal decree for proclamation; neither is established as her personal possession. (Chapters 1038 and 1271)
