Yuan Chengzhao
Yuan Chengzhao is a Yuan-family cultivator and junior disciple of Li Xizhi. His anxiety over his clan’s succession struggle and desire for authority made him vulnerable to the Chi family’s use of Qingsui Peak; his later choices broke the trust he once had with Li Xizhi. (Chapters 625, 734, 1027)
Biography
Pulled between clan and sect
While his master Yuan Tuan was away, Chengzhao worried that conflict among the Yuan family’s six Foundation Establishment elders would leave the clan unstable. He was a late-stage Qi cultivator and had spent most of his life cultivating at the sect, so the family dispute over Yuan Chengdun’s place and its inherited treasures left him anxious and politically inexperienced. He argued that Chengdun should be allowed to advance and that the treasures could be shared, but Yang Xiao’er warned him that the struggle was also about factional power and hierarchy. When Li Xizhi completed his breakthrough, Chengzhao congratulated him and later delivered the news that Xizhi’s father had died. (Chapters 625–626)
A borrowed seat at Qingsui Peak
After the Yuan family lost its central figures, Chengzhao remained at the Azure Pond Sect and rose to the peak of Qi Cultivation. The Chi family pressured him to accept Qingsui Peak’s master position, partly to constrain Li Xizhi. Fearing that Chi visitors would recognize the sword Li Xizhi’s father had wielded, he hid it and then returned it when Xizhi confronted him. Chengzhao accepted the peak-master robe and pendant, but his relief at Xizhi’s kindness and his private excitement at touching the symbol of office reveal how status had drawn him into the arrangement. (Chapter 734)
Ambition and estrangement
By the time Li Xizhi saw him again, Chengzhao had reached Foundation Establishment, much of it with support from the Si family. He had repeatedly sided with the Chi family and helped them use Li Xizhi’s personal belongings against him; after the Chi family fell, he begged Si Yuanli to conceal his role. He admitted that ambition had blinded him. Li Xizhi forgave the past for their absent master’s sake but told him not to return, and Chengzhao left saying he still had to shoulder his family’s needs. Years later, he had secretly left his sealed cave to wander and was reported missing. Elsewhere, Yuan Huyuan is named family head while Li Jiangqian recalls Chengzhao as the person who had managed the family; neither account gives Chengzhao’s whereabouts. (Chapters 1027, 1498, 1541, 1546)
Appearance and personality
Chengzhao has an earnest, unremarkable face. He becomes visibly flustered under pressure, sweats and trembles before Li Xizhi, and weeps when admitting his wrongdoing. His wish to protect the Yuan family is real, but fear and ambition repeatedly lead him to defer to whichever faction offers immediate security or advancement. (Chapters 625, 734, 1027)
Abilities and cultivation
Chengzhao was a late-stage Qi cultivator in Chapter 625, had reached the peak of Qi Cultivation by Chapter 734, and was a Foundation Establishment cultivator by Chapter 1027. Li Xizhi notes that the Si family’s resources supplied much of his later advancement. No named technique or personal combat specialty is established. (Chapters 625, 734, 1027)
Relationships
- Li Xizhi: His martial senior and former mentor. Chengzhao’s ambition and repeated alignment with the Chi family destroyed their trust, though Xizhi ultimately let him leave without further punishment. (Chapters 734, 1027)
- Yuan Tuan: His master, whose long absences left Chengzhao navigating both sect and clan pressures without firm guidance. (Chapters 625, 734)
- The Yuan family: Chengzhao remained concerned about its survival and said he had to shoulder its affairs, even as his choices contributed to conflict within it. (Chapters 625, 1027, 1541, 1546)
Items
Chengzhao hid and later returned the plain sword Li Chejing had used before forging his spirit sword. It was not Chengzhao’s sword. (Chapter 734)
