Tian Youdao

Tian Youdao is Tian Yun’s younger brother and the maternal uncle of Li Xuanfeng and Li Jingtian. Loyal to the Li Family, he struggles to restrain the arrogance of his own descendants before dying in its defense.

Biography

Family discipline and death in defense of the lake

Youdao begins cultivation late and reaches peak Embryonic Breathing only in his fifties. His seniority and past family favors give the Tian household considerable standing, but he warns Zhongqing that crossing the Li Family’s boundaries can bring ruthless punishment. His only son Tian Rong squanders that protection through idle amusements and arrogance. After the household suffers a warning, Youdao enters seclusion, determined to attain Qi quickly enough to return and discipline his descendants. Li support and a pill help him succeed. (Chapters 253–256, 259 and 300)

Further trouble caused by Rong brings Youdao close to beating him to death before Zhongqing intervenes. The two Qi cultivators recognize that their household’s influence cannot last merely through seniority and old favors, particularly while Xuanfeng is away. Youdao advises building trust with Yuanping to provide the family a more durable footing. He also undertakes Li missions, returning from Cloud Crowned Peak with news of the devil plague’s destruction. (Chapters 367 and 388–390)

When devil cultivators attack, Youdao fights alongside Zhongqing and Xu Gongming, but is the weakest of their group. A hammer breaks his mana shield and strikes his chest, killing him. An Zheyan reacts in fury, while Zhongqing carries the body away after Kongheng’s blessing. The family assigns a death gratuity, yet Rong’s reputation and the Tian household’s conflicts leave the survivors little inclination to pursue blame over the circumstances. His loss removes a loyal elder and weakens the support he had spent his life protecting. (Chapters 422–424)

Appearance and personality

He is stern and bearded, wearing gray robes in old age. Disappointment in his son makes him angry and sorrowful, while his experience and seniority give him a calmer manner than younger cultivators in times of danger. (Chapters 254, 259, 367, 370 and 390)

Abilities and cultivation

He reaches peak Embryonic Breathing late in life, then advances to Qi at sixty using Minor Pure Spiritual Qi and a Grade Two method supplied to the external families. His early-Qi strength is limited: even fighting with two companions, his shield cannot withstand the devil cultivator’s hammer. His influence within the clan depends more on loyalty, seniority and maternal kinship than exceptional combat talent. (Chapters 253, 300, 390 and 422–423)
