Biography

A family representative under scrutiny

As Tian Yun’s grandnephew and the eldest grandson leading his family’s younger generation, Zhongqing first serves as the Tian Family’s representative in Huaqian and carries intelligence to the Li family. His friendship with Xu Gongming gives him an outlet to discuss the gap between the Li family’s rapid cultivation and the prospects of outside families. When an unexplained sound interrupts one such conversation, both friends fear their speculation may have been overheard, though no listener is confirmed. Zhongqing treats the risk as a threat to his family: after three days of panic, he secretly summons his uncle Tian Youdao and repeats the conversation, accepting a severe rebuke. Youdao calls him the only Tian cultivator with a spiritual orifice capable of carrying the family’s legacy, then sends him to seek advice from their cousin Li Jingtian. She tells him to relinquish his Huaqian post and take allied cultivators to Mount Yue to tend fields; he accepts, asking only when he might return. (Chapters 204, 206, 248–256)

From family elder to final attempt

Zhongqing eventually breaks through to the Qi Cultivation Realm, but family discipline and external threats continue to weigh on him. During the devil cultivator attack at Mount Yuting, he fights beside Youdao; when a blow kills his uncle, Zhongqing holds the body and grieves openly, even lashing out at the monk who offers funeral prayers. The Tian Family’s contribution to the fighting earns Zhongqing appointment as Peak Guardian of Mount Huaqian, a defensive post that leaves him room to cultivate. He later returns from the northern campaign as one of the few surviving guest cultivators and becomes an elder. At 105, after spending much of his life in the late Qi stage, he enters seclusion to attempt Foundation Establishment through the Pure Essence path he had cultivated when the lake region was poor. The attempt fails, and he dies in seclusion after beginning that path too late in life. (Chapters 367, 422–424, 440, 887, 1043, 1269)

Appearance and personality

Zhongqing is introduced at seventeen or eighteen, already composed and polite in his dealings with the Li family. In Huaqian he wears leather armor while carrying out official duties. His composure does not make him indifferent: fear for the Tian family drives him to confess his mistake, and his uncle’s death draws a visible outpouring of grief. (Chapters 204, 206, 253–254, 423–424)

Abilities and cultivation

Zhongqing has a spiritual orifice and advances from the Embryonic Breathing Realm into the Qi Cultivation Realm, eventually reaching its late stage. He relied on the Pure Essence cultivation path in the earlier, poorer years of the lake region and changed methods only later; by his old age, Li Jiangqian judged that his age and late change left him little chance of reaching Foundation Establishment. Zhongqing’s final attempt fails and he dies. No named individual combat technique is established for him. (Chapters 204, 253, 367, 492, 1043, 1269)

Relationships

  • Tian Youdao: His uncle and senior in the Tian Family. Youdao reprimands him after the Huaqian conversation but also regards Zhongqing as the family’s best hope; they later fight together, and Zhongqing mourns him when he is killed. (Chapters 253–256, 422–424)
  • Xu Gongming: His childhood friend. Their private conversation about cultivation and family prospects nearly becomes a political liability for both. (Chapters 248–253)
  • Li Jingtian: His cousin and an adviser whose direction sends him away from his Huaqian post to cultivate at Mount Yue. (Chapter 256)
