Tang Shedu
Biography
Yuanwu Peak and the Mirrored Mirage Grotto
Tang Shedu entered the grotto as a renowned Yuanwu Peak cultivator and stayed close to his junior, Yu Muxian, while the two sought its treasures. When Muxian came under attack, Tang abandoned another fight to protect him; after Muxian fell, grief and fear turned into a furious assault on Li Yuanjiao, which Tu Longjian’s fire artifact helped repel. Tang escaped the grotto badly wounded and without its spoils. Because he feared his volatile master, Daoist Master Yuanwu, he used recovery as an excuse to remain secluded for more than a decade rather than return to the peak. (Chapters 597–614, 692)
A bid for equal standing
Tang later returned to the wars as a senior commander, and his halberd was effective against the devil cultivators: after Tuoba Chongyuan’s death, Tang cut through their forces and slew more than ten in a short advance. During the later battle with Li Xuanfeng, however, Tang held back while Murong En kept targeting Xuanfeng; Xuanfeng concluded that Tang had exposed the army’s plans and joined the northern side. Tang confirmed that he had joined the Northern Dao, resented the destiny that let Tu Longjian advance first, and said he wanted to continue his Dao and stand as an equal. He then tried to seize a Buddhist transformation opportunity in the battle, but Daoist Master Zipei broke his foundation and returned him to mortal flesh. Li Xuanfeng killed him before the promised transformation could take hold. (Chapters 793–805, 808)
Appearance and personality
Tang is associated with radiant armor and a long halberd, which earned him the epithet Long Sky Halberd. He could protect a fellow disciple fiercely, but later choices show a guarded, ambitious cultivator who measured his prospects against rivals and sought a path to stand with them as an equal. (Chapters 597–612, 793, 805)
Abilities and cultivation
Tang was a late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator with a formidable halberd art and a strong cultivation aptitude; Yuanwu’s interference had kept him from reaching Purple Mansion. His charged halberd strike injured Li Xuanfeng, and he could fight at length against Xiao Yongling, but he was not invulnerable: his forces collapsed in the later battle, and his own foundation was broken. (Chapters 587, 609, 805, 808)
During the final battle, Tang joined the Northern Dao and attempted to ascend through a Buddhist transformation. A Maha offered him a chance to become the Merciful One in exchange for killing a group of Foundation Establishment cultivators; Tang had not cultivated the relevant Buddhist spells, and the transformation remained incomplete. After Daoist Master Zipei broke his foundation, he was mortal and unable to escape Li Xuanfeng, who crushed his throat and reduced his body to dust. (Chapters 805–808)
